The 36th Chamber of Earth Defense Force

I’m playing each level on both Easy and Hard difficulties. I finished 49 of 53 levels on Easy and about 37 on Hard. I tried several times on certain levels to beat them on Hard but couldn’t quite do it, so I’ll wait for better weapons and try again later. Hard difficulty on some levels was pretty easy, and so I went for Hardest, and in a few cases, Inferno.

The main obstacle I’m having in the tougher levels are those spiders. They throw webbing at you that does damage over the time it is attached to you. If there are enough spiders around, you become covered in web and your health gets ripped down fast. It’s difficult to keep from getting surrounded in some levels. You need weapons that do massive damage but that won’t kill you along with it. You need fast reloads too. There is a class of special weapons that I haven’t fully explored yet, so perhaps there are some strategies to take advantage of on certain levels. I’ll try and figure those out when I return to the Hard levels I couldn’t beat this time around.

Also, I watched this martial arts movie, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin from 1978. This is a masterpiece of the genre and I strongly recommend it to anyone. It’s a perfectly directed movie that’s beautiful, has a wealth of incredible fight sequences, good acting, and a good story. I found absolutely nothing to complain about in it. Somewhere inside I think I am drawn to the kind of disciplined life of a shaolin monk. The vegetarian diet, the physical tests, the mastering of the mind and devotion to peace. I’m going to try and change some habits in accordance with what I saw today.

Hey that's the album the Wu Tang Clan paid homage to with their debut album!

I need to give Earth Defense Force another shot. The last time I tried it I really wasn't feeling the series.

Oh yea. That rings a bell now. I never knew the reference until now.

Where it really gets interesting is when you play higher difficulties and everything is going insane - bugs everywhere, giant robots tossing you around and flying saucers over head. I'm glad this version on Xbox One runs so smoothly. On 360 it would run into a few slowdowns when things got really busy on screen.
