First week of August and I am number one on my friend's achievement leaderboard. Maybe I can maintain it this month. I got Forza Horizon 2 and Dead Space 3 from Games with Gold. Yummy yummy, free games. Below is what I played today on GameCube and Xbox One.

Mech Platoon: This GBA RTS is pretty cool. You build bases and harvest materials on alien planets battling native species and rival factions. There are many mech types and you can upgrade them with parts found in the field from downed enemies. I really liked it and would have gladly played it the whole evening but Mark was playing Rocket League and I couldn't help getting involved.

Rocket League: Mark and I partied up and played 3v3 online. Man is it fun but I got a little frustrated after a while. It is very tricky to get the hang of it. I'm still getting used to the way the ball bounces and the controls. I used the double "A" tap a lot and it makes a big difference. It spins your car forward giving you a little boost and providing a better way to take a shot on goal. I need to figure out moving the ball consistently though. Some guys just got that down.

I love upgrading my vehicle even though it's largely just cosmetic. I had a van with a buttered waffle attached to my radio antenna. The thing wiggles around when I move. It's just funny. I am not paying for licensed vehicles, as much as I want to. I can see how that can get out of hand.

Trivial Pursuit Live and Wheel of Fortune: Played some more of both of these with Mark and a bunch of random players online. Very fun. I'm still getting used to the types of hints given in Wheel of Fortune. I haven't watched the show in a very long time and forget what some of them mean. Like Before & After. What the heck? It's like two phrases that share a word. How was I to know that?

Well, my weird mid-week weekend is over. Next week I'll be breaking out the GameCube games and seeing what will stay, what goes to Goodwill and what gets sold. I have a few that might be worth something. I'm going to play them all first though.

Well, a bunch. Not a whole lot though. My favorite right now is Paper Mario Thousand Year Door. I have some I haven't tried yet like Eternal Darkness and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles I want to try next week.

No idea how it holds up, but ED: SR was a favorite of mine.

I've had Eternal Darkness for so long. I'm finally going to play it. I bet it's worth something too. Let me see. . . nope, I can get it for $20 on ebay.

I don't think I've used that double tap A trick in Rocket League. On the Switch I use the Mario Car, and I think one of the default cars with a WWE flag. On Steam I use a default car. I don't remember which version but I think I bought the Fast and Furious cars.

I ran through the pro tutorials and it taught me the move. Lean forward on the stick and double-tap "a" and you get a boost forward and your car spins end over end. Then you hit the ball a little harder.

Don't even mention custom cars to me. I so want them.

I had absolutely the lowest hopes for it when I downloaded it from Game Pass. So it surprised me. I'm still not going to play it a ton though. It's generally not my type of game. When I switched to Mech Platoon that one day, then I was truely happy. RTS, yum.
