New games, shopping local, and doing a trail challenge

At a time when I really shouldn't be spending money on things I don't need, what do I do? I buy two new games. I should feel remorse and guilt, but I don't.

First up is Dragon Quest XI. I wasn't going to buy it immediately. I was going to be good. That lasted until about noon on Tuesday when I called Game Box Video Games to see if they had it in stock. Yup, one copy. They held it for me until I picked it up just before 4 PM. And the person behind the counter, who wasn't the person I'd spoken to on the phone, knew just which customer that game was being held for as soon as I walked through the door without even looking at the name on the hold slip from a conversation we'd had about a month earlier. And while I was there, I asked if they did pre-orders. "Shadow of the Tomb Raider for PS4?" asked Lina. Yup. I'd pre-ordered it on Amazon, but I was feeling guilty for not buying local and supporting these guys, so I paid for the game at Game Box and then came home and cancelled my order with Amazon. It will mean having to drive over to Topsham to get it instead of just opening my mailbox, but Amazon doesn't really give a shit about me as a person and my likes and dislikes. They're just corporate greed at it's most obvious. Tony, Lina, Jeff, and all the others actually care about their customers.

With my purchase of DQ XI, I fell off the adventure game wagon. I was going to try to finsh Arkham City before I jumped into DQ XI and got lost for the next however long it takes me. HA! I really should have known better. I've pretty much been playing it whenever I can get away with it since I got home on Tuesday from my little shopping excursion.

Our local conservation trust puts on a trail challenge every year after Labor Day. They print up a passport and feature four different trails on it. The idea is to hike the trails, find the hidden passport station (not hidden at all, but at the furthest point out on the trail so you have to do the whole thing), stamp your passport or take a photo and post on their Facebook page. Jason and I did one on Wednesday. We're stamping our passports, but I'm also taking a photo of Beau at every one, and then a silly photo of one of his squirrel toys at each one. Adults who turn in a finished passport get a free bowl of soup at some frou frou soup place in town and a free crepe at the crepe stand. I want the kiddie prize, that's an ice cream cone at Ben & Jerry's. Beau will get a free treat from out local pet supply place, The Pet Pantry, a store all three of my dogs have loved. I dunno what the squirrel squad will get, I'm just having fun using them as props, lol.

Until next time, Pixlbitians. I think I'll probably write about my adventures in DQ XI next time. But that may not be until at least Tuesday. Have a great weekend, everyone!

I want to hear all about DQXI. I have to vicariously play it through you and Matt. Ha ha.

I like that you prefer to buy local. I do as well. There's something extra personal about going down to the store, meeting the people there, and getting your product. It's soulless online.

I'm spoiled for choice in the buy local end of things here. Books, movies, music, and games, I have local indie stores for all of them that beat anything big box or online. And the market I work at in the winter and where I've done my grocery shopping for years is also a locally-owned independent grocery store. The best things about buying local are that you know the money stays in the community and supports real people. Not to mention havng a personal relationship with the employees.

I will try and update you as much as I can with DQ XI. I'm really liking it, it's like DQ VIII and DQ IX had a really beautiful, talented love child together. I have a couple of minor quibbles with it, but they are very minor. As a matter of fact, as soon as I finish typing this, I'm going to throw a frozen pizza in the oven and get back to it.

I've got some choices. Let's see. I've got a used record shop and two used book shops. Then there are several GoodwIlls and all the library book sales. I just wish I had an indie video game shop. Gamestops are everywhere but I've really fallen out with them. Their agressive sales style these days has totally turned me off. I used to know so many people in those stores too. Sad.

I try and go to this healthfood store, Mom's. Usually Whole Foods is closer but I like smaller health food stores. There's a more intimate feel there and a true health food store has better choices.

Have fun with DQ!

I'm playing Yakuza Kiwami 2 the way all of you are playing DQXI. Both RPGs, but mine has action combat and a lady cop.

I have Yakuza 3 for the PS3. I started it, and then decided to track down the first two games and play them first. And obviously, that didn't happen. Have fun with Yakuza!

They have remasters for the PS3, but I'm not sure those two games would hold up now. Much better to buy Kiwami for PS4 for like $20. More than worth the price.

The trail challenge sounds neat. Believe it or not, Phoenix is a highly ranked hiking city... there're tons of trails in the desert and mountains. Meanwhile, I'm having trouble motivating myself to walk around the block.

Did I tell you I'm on a diet? I've lost nine pounds so far. I'm working on it. Took time to gain, will take time to lose.

I'm loving Dragon Quest. So relaxing.

I've hiked some of those trails in Phoenix. South Mountain Park is really nice, and they had info panels about the more common desert plants, which I really liked.

No, didn't know about the diet. Congrats on the first 9 pounds! I need to lose about 20, I've been a wicked slug this summer, with the humidity. Tomorrow is supposed to be cool and dry, so my plan is to get up early and take a nice, easy run with Beau and get back on the Couch to 5K plan again. That's what I say now. We'll see what happens when the alarm goes off at 5:30 tomorrow morning.

Sedona is a great hiking area, too. My friend and I were going to hike in Sedona, but she has trouble getting going in the mornings, LOL, so instead of hiking we went to a wine-tasting and an expensive steakhouse. People are pretty stupid about hiking in Phoenix in the summer, though. Most days, there's a story about someone getting overheated and having to be rescued because they go hiking in the middle of a 120-degree day.

This month, sequels to two of my all time favorite games hit: DQXI and Valkyria Chronicles 4. VC4 has a really sweet collectors' edition and it has the bonus of being on the Switch, which is my preferred platform nowadays, so that's what I went with. I've had sequels to nearly every one of my favorite game series drop over the past year. I'm still playing Breath of the Wild.

I'm embroiled in Breath of the Wild right now. 45 hours and still not halfway through the game Surprised But it's so good! I'm hoping to play DQXI eventually but I still haven't played DQV on my DS yet, sooooooooo yeah...

Life would be so much easier if we didn't love such long games, lol.
