Phee-ew, I finally got a Wii-U.

Just as I was looking at Gamestop's weekly sales to see what was up, I saw one on Wii-U, $30 off. I was going to wait a few weeks but this seemed like the perfect time to strike. One benjamin down, but I can now play some pre-Switch Nintendo games.

I was thinking the other day about the release of the iPad, 2010. It was only two years later that Nintendo encorporated it's concept into the Wii-U. I've been told the Wii-U was supposed to be the Switch. The systems are pretty similar. The Wii-U even feels a bit like a prototype for the Switch.

Well, I couldn't wait for Nintendo to port Pikmin 3 to Switch. I have to play it, not to mention Zelda Wind Waker HD, the Zelda game I most want to play for that cell-shaded design choice. Maybe Wind Waker is available for Switch now? I haven't heard but maybe I missed it. I used to follow all the Nintendo news through Nintendo Power and then IGN's Nintendo podcast but I don't have much time to keep up lately.

I'll be hooking it up in about two weeks, at the beginning of October when I start my retro media blitz for the years 2010-2014. I can't wait to figure it all out. I'm still wondering whether I use my Wii account on it or not. I've heard annoying things about transfering Wii eshop games bought to the Wii-U. I may not even do that, but I'm worried about using the same account and then getting locked out of stuff I already bought. Maybe someone here knows how to handle that?

I really liked the Wii U.  I didin't think it was a bad system at all.  In fact, I only got a PS4 after the Wii U was technically 'dead' and the PS4 was on sale for Black Friday.  If I remember correctly, the Wii U is a pain in the butt to hook up, so have fun with that.  You'll have to let me know what you think of the Good Feel games I had you buy.  And no, Wind Waker is not on Switch yet.

I noticed it still has the sensor bar. I thought they were done with that for the Wii-U. What else is tricky about setting it up?

The wii-u has a lot of great games but I'd still call it a bad system. Okay, maybe not bad, but the interface, set up, eshop, and some of the features were really poorly implemented. Especially the parental lock. For some reason after being able to start bayonetta 2 just fine, parental lock turned itself on and wouldn't let me play any game with an m rating or higher. I couldn't turn it off either and mine was the only account on the system. If I made a new account, they all had parental lock on by default. I ended up having to do a system reset to get it to work which deleted all of my game saves. So yeah, fuck the wii-u.

The switch is much better in that regard though.

I remember when I was looking into it at launch, being disappointed that I couldn't take the tablet with me or away from the system very far. I wanted the Wii-U to be my first tablet computer as well as a game system.

Not sure if 2010 to 2014 is what I'd consider retro, since we're in the same decade; but I guess going by exact definition it works. lol

Yeah, there's some stuff I'd love to have on Wii U, but I think I'd wait until it's ported to Switch. Remembered the other day Bayonetta is on PC now and I think I may play it that way.

Yea, not really retro just the years I'm thinking about for October.

Nintendo takes their sweet time with ports. I can't wait forever.

Really? They seem to be porting everything to the Switch. But I guess if it's not the games you want, then how many there are kinda doesn't matter.

Ok, maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am wrong. I want to see their entire back catalog on Switch. Only bad side is it'll make me want one even more and I gotta watch the cash flow right now. Makes me want to quit school and go back to work badly.

I'm proabably less informed on this than you are, I was just saying a lot of big announcements for the Switch are ports.

I just saw this article on Twin Galaxies compalaining about lack of ports and online features from Nintendo. It was posted just a week ago. I don't want to knock them, but they have such a great back history of games, why aren't they bringing them all out for us to buy all over again. I know I would.

At least one thing in that article is a bit outdated, as PS Now actually does offer dowbloads now (FINALLY). And the article seems to be talking about NES, SNES, N64 era stuff, but when I said lots of ports were coming I meant from last gen; at least, I've seen lots of folks get excited for those.

I don't disagree with the article, but I think we might be talking about different things. I'm not really sure, since I'm pretty ignorant of Nintendo these days.

Me too really. I used to follow it closer but I don't have as much driving time to listen to podcasts as I used to. I know they'll have some good stuff coming soon. The system is doing really well. Nintendo is always cautious. Once it's doing well though, they'll get cracking on features and ports.

You probably already did, but if it is a pre-owned system, plug it in now, give it a spin with a game and make sure everything works. GameStop is shady.

Also congrats on the new console! It does seem like the Wii-U was a prototype for the Switch. When it was first announced I thought it the concept was cool but until I saw that you had to be close to the main unit. I stuck with my handheld Sony products after that. Heck Sony promised a lot with the PSP/Vita about syncing games with the PS3/4, but it was spotty at best.

You know, you're right. I think I might set it up this coming week just to make sure. I forgot to check the return policy/warranty thing, but if it's broke I'm sure I can get them to replace it if I do it soon.

Ha. I remember waiting in anticipation to use my PSP with my PS3. I dont' think I ever did. It was probably that they didn't implement it with enough games.

I enjoyed the Wii U. It was a deeply flawed system, but it honestly had more fun games on it than the first year or two of the PS4 and Xbox One. Bayonetta 2 and Mario Maker in particular were awesome. I'm glad a lot of them are getting a second life on the Switch. I'm hoping for the Zelda remakes and Tokyo Mirage Sessions on Switch.

Oh I saw Tokyo Mirage Sessions when I was looking through games. I'm curious about that one.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions is great.

In fact I may have a 30% code for it but I already have it in disc form.

I'll pick it up in disc form sometime. My WiiU library needs to grow a little.

Congrats, man! I liked the Wii U and played a bit of it. Even played with my mom with the Wii-U Fit. I loved the re-released Wind Waker, but I didn't finish it. Twilight Princess is great too. Super Mario World isn't the best Mario game, but it's not bad. Have fun with it, and like it's recommended above, I would definitely test it sooner than later.

Correction, Super Mario 3D World. :)

Gorram it all, I really want to wait a week, but now I'm worried, so I'll test it. That means I'll have to lug two systems over to my friend Mark's place tomorrow. Ugh.

I've heard the Wii-U as prototype for Switch thing so many times but it doesn't make any sense.

The Wii-U if anything was an attempt to move the dual screen success of the DS and 3DS to the TV. The Switch takes that concept and throws it out the window.

The Wii-U did not have a handheld unit you could take on the road with you. Well you could but it wouldn't do anything once it was more than about 30 feet from your TV and only while the console was turned on. The processing power is all in the unit attached to the TV, there is none in the Wii-U gamepad.

The Wii-U had games that utilized dual screens. The Switch has one screen, either the handheld unit or your television, there is no dual screen capability.

In short the Wii-U was a console with a gamepad that had a screen in it.

The Switch is a complete console with a screen in it that can be plugged into your TV or taken with you.

Anyway I'm glad you got one. Mine just pissed me off because the 250 GB external drive I had attached to it just puked and now I have to find another one. :)

Some GameStop guy told me that. I went with it, but you are right, it's more like the 3DS.

I hope you didn't lose a bunch of games.

Nah I just need to buy a new external drive and download them again. A bit of a PITA but I'll get over it.
