The Soldier and the Explorer

This is how I see my friend Mark and I. He's the soldier and I'm the explorer. This sometimes results in conflict during co-op gaming, like today when we finished the Guns, Love and Tentacles DLC for Borderlands 3.

We're not done yet even though we beat the main story. There are lots of side missions we've been doing and still more to do. There are collectibles and probably other achievements to hunt for.

But I mention the conflict because it's interesting. Mark is all about the kills and the battles, and I am all about searching every corner, looking at details in the environment and digging up collectibles. So sometimes I will abandon the battle to search a new area. Usually Mark is more than able to handle it but one time today he got killed because I went down a side passage to see what there was to see. It happens every so often. The pull I feel to explore is so great, I can't resist it. It's the same with him and the battles.

I think there's no real solution to it. In any case, most of the time we battle together and I go exploring the second the situation gets under control.

I'll say this about the DLC. It's very, very Lovecraftian. There's a cursed town with villagers who act strange and a secret cult worshiping some tentacled god. Laid on top of this setting is the wedding of Hammerlock and Wainright. Your job is to make sure it happens despite the attempts of a woman mad with Cthulhuean power. Something could be said here of a psychological bent but I'm not sure I could articulate it well enough in an impromptu blog.

There are also a lot of locations that resemble anatomy like in all the Borderlands games. Sometimes the very map design is based on human anatomy. I'm not sure what else is trying to be said by this other than just making another joke.

Someone once said that Borderlands thinks it's funner than it is. I found myself laughing pretty often, so I think it's mostly funny. I can see where the criticism is coming from though. Sometimes the jokes seem a bit forced. I really enjoy it though.

Well, on to completionist efforts now that the basic story is done. I want to hear every joke and see every bit of graphic design in this DLC.

Yeah, me and my brother had different styles and eventually I had to quit playing co op with him. Too stressful.

It got a bit testy today but I tried to keep calm. Mark is seriously competitive, and I am all about the journey. I think I rage quit one of his sessions and he one of mine, but we collaborated to get these achievements and beat the bosses. It usually works itself out in the end.
