My Media Scrapbook: 2018

Did a lot of school learning computers and office admin. I also worked at the library part-time. I enjoyed it all but not the uncertainty of the future part. It was a year of tension and inner questioning. But, I enjoyed some media somehow. Here are my favorites.

TV: The Shivering Truth:

I watched a bunch of episodes of this stop-motion animated show on Adult Swim's website. It's very like an extended nightmare full of surreal and harrowing moments. It's extremely creative though, so I love it, even though it creeps me out. I think that's what it's trying to do anyway.

Film: Hotel Transylvania 3:

I was so into this series from movie 1. Adam Sandler is Drac and Mel Brooks is his father. Everyone is great. I love all the different monsters and their personalities as if they were regular people. It's sort of The Adam's Family but funnier and with more monsters.

Game: Farm Together:

It's almost as addictive as Minecraft for me and my gaming buddy. It's just farming in a cartoony style but there's a lot to farm from veggies to fruit, flowers, animals, and fish. Also, you can do a lot of cosmetic stuff to make the farm unique. You get a tractor to ride on and eventually a train. I somehow wish there was trading or social elements beyond just allowing random players to help harvest. But, I'm still playing it for that last achievement.

Music: What's Happening by Jakob Dylan from Echo in the Canyon soundtrack:

So this is a cover of a song by The Byrds I really love. Its melancholy vibe and twangy guitar really appeal to me. Jakob Dylan played this at the end of the film Echo in the Canyon. The film was about the music scene in the 60s in Laurel Canyon, California - all that peace, love, and war protest music.

Book: I'll have to leave this blank right now, because I don't have a favorite yet. I've been trying to cram books to find one, but you know books, they're like playing a good length RPG - they take time.

What was up with you in 2018?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate came out on the Switch that year, and a lot of people put it as their GOTY.  But not me.  One reason is because I put every single Smash game before it as my GOTY in years past.  And some people may disagree with me, but Smash Ultimate isn't THAT much different from the Wii U version.  Honestly, I was more impressed with Nintendo Labo, so I gave that my GOTY in 2018.  I just think it was so creative and educational and I had so much fun building the sets with my brother Jeff.  It's a shame Labo didn't do very well.

If I ever run into people who want to play Super Smash Bros of any edition, I would love to play it.

Have you ever played a Smash game before?

I don't think so.

2018 was when I started working on my current book, which is almost done, and completely changed my perspective on my work and what I wanted to accomplish. Times have been good since then.

That's great. I hope your book does well. I'm cooking up a book project myself, but it's only in the planning stages right now.

Books take a long time man. But if you got the endurance, it's worth it.

I have a year-long writing project. Maybe it will be a set of short stories. I'm still figuring it out.
