...a wild variety of games as I complete Game Pass quests and try and clear my hard drive going from smallest file size to largest. Sometimes I even add a new game or get a new addition on Game Pass just because. Makes for a chaotic but fun and hyper game session - just how I like it.

Halo: Master Chief Collection: Played for Game Pass points. Just needed an achievement so went for the complete campaigns for all games. The only one I hadn't finished in this collection was Halo Reach, so I started it. An achievement appeared after clearing the first chapter of the game so I stopped there. I always liked the gameplay of Reach. My friend doesn't like it because of the downer storyline and no Master Chief, but I am never turned off of a game just because of the story. The action and graphics of this Halo game make it one of my favorites of the series.

Midway Arcade Origins: I specifically went after achievements. They are all tied to doing things in Score Attack mode in each of the games. Score Attack mode is like having only one quarter for the machine. Previously I had already gotten the achievements in half of the games so I only played those I hadn't. I was successful with Defender rescuing three humans from the aliens. I still don't like how the game controls though.

Some others I played without getting an achievement, but learned some new tricks and started to enjoy them more. They were: 720 - a skateboarding game. I actually got away from the "skate or die grim reaper" and completed several skate parks. DIdn't get gold for the achievement in any of them though; APB - a vertically scrolling game where you drive a police car and pull over lawbreakers like a police-themed Spy Hunter. Almost got the first boss but failed; Championship Sprint - one of those top-down car racing games. I needed to win three races and could only win the first one. Controls are really tricky on a modern controller. Defender II - Hate the way the ship shifts the screen when you turn around. It gets me killed every time. Gauntlet - Seriously this game is mega unfair. You cannot avoid enough damage to get to level 6 or whatever it was for the achievement. Better probably in co-op; Joust 2 - is pretty fun but a few levels in and your enemies are so fast it's hard to play; Rampage - couldn't quite clear level 3 with one life; Sinistar - one of my favorites in the arcade but here it's just difficult with an analog thumb stick. I find it hard to pick up those one pixel-sized sinibombs. You need 13 to break up Sinistar. Also he appears on the screen so quickly. I need to watch the mini map a little more next time; Smash TV - Twin-stick shooter gets really crazy a few rooms in. Fun though.

This is a pretty great collection. It was part of Games with Gold recently. I had the physical disc which is backward compatible on Xbox One but now I don't need it with the free digital copy. I'm totally converted to digital. What else will go fully digital, me?

Ryse: Son of Rome: Again this is made part of a Game Pass quest. This time I needed 35 kills. I did that pretty quickly. I like the battle system but there are a lot of buttons to press to activate finishing moves. I need to play from the beginning every time to refresh my memory.

Minecraft: So now Mark and I are cheating our asses off to make sure a fortress and stronghold are findable in a reasonable amount of time on a world we spawn. We start in creative mode and find both those locations and mark them so when we turn survival mode back on we can harvest them for their riches. It disables achievements but we've got all of them already anyway.

We also discovered a new material for better armor and weapons. It came out a year ago but I guess we missed the update news. It's a material in the nether rarer than diamond. You use it to coat your diamond tools/armor and give them an extra plus in damage and reduce knockback. I forget the name of it offhand right now. It's something I'll be mining for in future game sessions.

NIghtmares from the Deep 3: I finished this and really want to play the first two games in the series now. It's fun and I love that you can never get stuck because you are allowed to skip a puzzle or in some cases substitute a Mahjong match instead. You may miss an achievement by doing that but I don't care that much. All point-and-click adventures should have a hint system or ability to skip something unpleasant in order to enjoy the story.

Peggle 2: Presentation in this game is so fantastic. Such eye-popping colorful graphics, music and funny characters. I bought the two DLC characters and their levels and played through as many as I could. I still have some trial and story missions unbeaten.

Stern Pinball Arcade: I bought a three pack of tables and played Ripley's Believe It Or Not. I was going for the achievement to get your high score in the top three on one of the leaderboards. I did that locally but I think I need to do it on a different board for the achievement. Next time I'll figure that out.

Darkest Dungeon: So this just got added to Game Pass. I had it already on my PS4 but I was thrilled to have it on Xbox where I play most. I so love the presentation of the opening of the game - so dark and grim and ominous. It's like an Edgar Allan Poe story made into a game. I ran my team through the first dungeon and second dungeon and then started getting stimied. I kept running out of food and starving. I love how the characters are affected in psychological ways while fighting monsters. They take on phobias and disagreeable behaviors that have to be cured in the temple or relieved in the tavern. I love this game a lot and will keep playing it.

Rock of Ages III: I always liked the Monty Pythonesque animation in this series but I'm not quite happy with the controls. In this one you not only roll a boulder through an obstacle course but defend a castle against enemies boulders with towers and such. I played a few levels and then got disinterested. I don't like constantly flying off the course ala Marble Madness.

State of Decay: The first game in the series originally made for Xbox 360. I've only recently gotten into it through the second game via Game Pass quests. I really like this game. Fight them zombies and manage a fort with compadres, gather supplies and build new facilities as you go. The third-person action is solid too. I'll keep this in rotation for a while I think.

Darkest Dungeon is a GREAT game, but it's pretty darn difficult. It's very inventive though, and has its own unique style. The gameplay loops is pretty addictive, but it can also be pretty unforgiving.

I was in an apparently easy dungeon and I couldn't get through it. I brought about 4 meals for each party member. I think I need like 5 times that to survive.

I wish there was a way to play Midway arcade classics on more modern hardware. In this generation we can play almost every Japanese arcade game out there. Even Nintendo's arcade games are now available. But the arcade classics owned by one of the largest American media conglomerates in the world are nowhere to be found. At least Balloon Fight fills the Joust void pretty nicely.

Each generation I watch to see what classic arcade game publishers will put out a new collection. Looks like Warner Bros owns all of Midway's games since they went bankrupt in 2009. Arcade Origins came out in 2012, published by Warner Bros.. They should do a new collection.

I thought it was great a SNK collection came out recently. I used to have the one of Wii but not anymore.

It's funny, Midway/Atari stuff keeps getting passed around from owner and owner and still somehow keeps ending up back in the possession of Warner Media, which owned Atari during the 2600 days.

Oh yeah, I think they bought Atari right before the video game crash. I think they might have been partially responsible for it.

It's hard to get achievements on classic arcade games since they were designed to be super hard quarter munchers.  I'm proud that I got all the achievements on Dig Dug and Pac-Man Championship Edtion on the 360.

I never was good at 720 or APB.  I always thought it was interesting that Championship Sprint was based on an old black and white Atari game from the 70's.  I stink at Defender, but I do like the Atari 2600 version, surprisingly.  I've always been good at that one, even as a little kid.  Gauntlet was huge back in the day.  I never got to play it right away because all the bigger kids kept hogging it.  First time I got to play it was when some really nice teenagers let me join in.  I didn't know about Joust 2 until I saw it on one of the collections.  Had I seen it in arcades back in the day, I would've freaked out.  Love that game.  I have a lot of good memories playing Rampage with my brothers, especially the newer ones.  As a kid, I was always scared of Sinistar.  I would try to walk as far away from the machine as possible in arcades.  Smash TV was a 90s favorite for me and my friends.  I think it's interesting it was made by the same guy who made Defender and Robotron.

I've found that some of these games get me real frustrated at first but after I return to them a few times I start to get the hang of them, like 720 and APB. The achievement on Defender really wasn't that hard, rescuing 3 astronauts. I realized that you can just pick one up and then just crash to the ground. You don't blow up.

Usually you ditch a game when you get stumped on it, so Darkest Dungeon must be good :D

I passed a source of frustration yesterday when I realized you aren't really supposed to hang on every single character but on a whole roster of them. If one dies, you slot in another. Also, abandoning a dungeon does not mean you lose all the money and artifacts you find. That was a big plus.
