Machine Memories: GameCube

I got a GameCube in 2001 to play Factor 5’s next Rogue Squadron game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. I soon got into other stuff, although not nearly as many games as the other systems.

I had the launch Indigo colored GameCube at one point, but then got the Platinum edition released in 2002. That is now my favorite GameCube and goes well with my silver PS2. If only Xbox came in silver, I’d have a complete silver console set for that generation.

I always tried to create a theme around game consoles at this time: Xbox was for FPS, PS2 for Japanese-style games, and GameCube for cartoony, cell-shaded, or whimsical games. It wasn’ta hard-and-fast rule, but just a general aim.

Games I played that fit that description for GameCube were: Army Men RTS, Battalion Wars, Legend of Zelda Wind Waker, Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Pikmin 1-2, Rampage: Total Destruction, and Viewtiful Joe 1-2.

A few exclusive FPS games I played were: Geist, Metroid Prime, and Serious Sam: Next Encounter.

Then there were the aforementioned Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader and its sequel SWRS III: Rebel Strike.

I got the Game Boy Player in 2003 and thereafter started exploring Game Boy, GBC and GBA games. It’s my preferred way to play all the Game Boy games before the DS because even the GBA SP doesn’t have a bright enough screen for me.

TV Time! I love the head-banging Pikmin in one scene in this commercial.

I love this console but it's also the one that turned me into a REAL annoying Nintendo fanboy. Sealed

There was a lot of XBOX-hate that 11-year-old me only really engaged in because I knew I had to pay for my own consoles due to our money situation (with lawn mowing money from mom and dad but still) and knowing GCN was the cheapest console.

But I probably could have had a girlfriend a lot sooner if I hadn't been so passionate about it.

Lawn mower money reminds me how I had a local business going in my neighborhood as a kid and spent it all on photography gear and scifi books.

Love Gamecube! Me and my brothers were able to get one in 2002 and the game we played to death was SSB Melee! Also, I just bought a Gamecube a couple weeks ago because my Wii died and I have been itching to play some great GCN games. Right now I'm playing Paper Mario TTYD, which is exceptional. Also, I LOVED the Viewtiful Joe games, it's a shame that series is dead.

Paper Mario Thousand Year Door is so darn good. I found it so creative and a joy to play.

I got a charcoal-black GC for my birthday. It's one of my favorite systems ever even now. The Nintendo 64 let me down, so the Gamecube had a lot to do to regain my trust. And it delivered. Wind Waker and Twilight Princess were two of the most amazing games I'd ever played, and Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4 signaled the return of action games.  Plus, it was great to have strong RPGs on a Nintendo system again. Tales of Symphonia, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Skies of Arcadia, Baten Kaitos, and Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life were my favorites, and I also enjoyed playing FF Crystal Chronicles with a friend. The Gamecube version of Soulcalibur II with Link was a nice little bonus. Some years I played Gamecube and bought more games than I did for PS2.

We're getting a lot of these games released on the Switch this year. It's 2004 all over again.

I had several of those RPGs but never found the time to get to them. Too busy blowing things up with my friend on other systems, I guess.

Yeah, I saw the Baten Kaitos rerelease on a Nintendo Direct the other week. Oh man, there's some good retro stuff coming to Switch soon. I'm actually getting into preorders again.

When we did our podcast on our top five favorite consoles, the GameCube was my number 5 choice.  It was real hard to pick from that and the PS2, but ultimately the GameCube won out because this was when Nintendo was really firing on all cylinders and making some pretty experimental games for it.  Case in point, the launch title for it was not a Mario game, but Luigi's Mansion!  I got the black GameCube at launch at Wal-Mart with a few of my friends.  This was back before game consoles weren't hard to get.

Other games I liked included Super Monkey Ball, Mario Sunshine, Zelda: Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventures, F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, heck, even the first Animal Crossing came out on GameCube, and that's one of my top five favorite games of all time!  Oh yeah, and the Game Boy Player was a game changer!

I would never trade away the Game Boy Player and my Gamecube. I have trouble seeing the screen on the Game Boy handhelds - not bright enough, any of them.
