Machine Memories: PS4

I remember being really impressed with the graphics of Killzone: Shadow Fall, a PS4 exclusive, during the launch. I don’t think I got a PS4 until a year later though on a black Friday sale 2014.

PS4

A PS4 slim came out later and a PS4 Pro console. I eventually traded my PS4 in 2020 or thereabouts when the trade-in value was high. Now I’d like to get the white PS4 slim to go with my white Xbox Series S. I’m currently hunting for one.

I feel like most of what I played on PS4 were continuations of series I already knew from previous Sony consoles, but there were a few new series I got into like Ni No Kuni, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, The Order 1886, and Bloodborne. I really like the design of the system, it’s smaller size, and the graphics. Games on PS4 always looked just a bit better than on Xbox One to me.

I’ve started to restock a games library for the PS4, and soon I should have a replacement deck.

TV Time! PS4 Launch Video. Can you name all the games shown?

I got the PS4 on a Black Friday sale, too.  Around 2016 I think.  And it's still the most current PlayStation console I use even today!  I don't feel the need to get a PS5 anytime soon.  I think the PS4 runs way better than my PS3 did.  I try to get most of my games on the PS4 instead of the Switch, unless it's only available on the Switch or if it's something I'd rather play on the go.

It's weird how there seem to be few games exclusive to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. I just reaquired a PS4 and am rebuilding my game library for it. Any suggestions?

The most disappointing console for me. I was so excited after how much I loved the PS3's twilight years, but year one was horrible, 2015 wasn't much better but at least had Bloodborne. Once the exclusives started rolling like Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn I kept thinking they were fine but didn't feel special. And the machine itself was so slow that I found myself enjoying the games I like less just from having to put up with that horrible interface. PS5 is a huge improvement as a machine, but the games haven't interested me too much so far. Adore Ratchet and Returnal, but not much else. Hoping for better things with Spider-Man and FFXVI deliver this year

I've just started rebuilding my PS4 collection, but I already feel it will be a small group of exclusive games.

PS4 has been a solid console and an improvement over PS3. However, it did start out somewhat slow as far as games went. In 2017, the games started coming in heralded by Persona 5. However, that's also the time the Switch showed up, and the Switch ended up taking up a lot more of my gaming time and dollars than the PS4 did.

Most of my time and money has been on Xbox, 'cause my friend plays it. He used to share my multiconsole playing but not since he retired. I guess it's a money thing. I'm still devoted to playing something on the other systems when I can.
