Catching Up: Capcom Arcade Stadium 2nd Stadium

In February I was still using the "Surprise Me" button on my Xbox to generate random games from my collection (I give myself the right to veto anything unappealing). I didn't veto Capcom Arcade Stadium 2 when it came up.

I bought 1943 Kai, King of Dragons, and Exed Exes and played them all. 1943 and Exed are vertically scrolling shooters and King of Dragons is a side scrolling beat-em-up.

What I loved about Capcom AS2S is the customization you can apply to the games. You can change the format and resolution of the screen, set background wallpapers, adjust the gameplay and take part in challenges that put your score on a leaderboard.

The one customization I played around with a lot was the difficulty. Games like 1943 and Exed Exes can be brutal, and I wanted to at least be able to finish them. The difficulty adjustment didn't seem to help that much and the speed adjustment wasn't effective. Slowing the speed of the game slows your movement as well as the enemies, which defeats the purpose of making the game easier. I needed an enemy only speed adjustment, then maybe I could have finished those games.

I particularly liked Exed Exes because it resembles Xevious, a favorite, and came out in 1987, the year of Sky Shark. Take a look at the boss I'll never see.

I'm glad I got to review this.  Kind of sad I didn't get to review the first one.

I may have to get into the first one too. I think I missed it.

The first one had a lot of old-school Capcom arcade games that I loved, like Ghosts n Goblins and 1943, plus later Capcom classics like Giga Wing. For the second one, the only game I got was Saturday Night Slam Masters. Part of the problem is that there's too much overlap with other Capcom collections. Street Fighter is already available in a collection, as are Capcom's beat-em-ups. Darkstalkers, Vampire Savior, and Super Puzzle Fighter are cool and were overlooked for a long time, but I have those in the Capcom Fighting Collection.

I have to get some of the games in Stadium One sometime. I might get Super Puzzle Fighter again just for achievements and the adjustments you can make within Capcom Arcade Stadium 2.
