I saved the 2-page ads for this blog. There were a lot of them. 2-page ads are always super cool. I love finding them.

exter

Extermination was a very early PS2 exclusive survival/horror game with similarities to Resident Evil and the film The Thing. This is the first I've heard of it, and I've scanned through the complete list of PS2 games many times.

darkcloud

Oh yeah! Dark Cloud! I kind of bounced off this the first time I played it, but I'm excited to try Dark Cloud 2, which I still have.

TMB

I played some of Twisted Metal Black, but I'm not a big fan of arena style battle games. I like destruction derby within races rather than in arenas. The Burnout series, Destruction Derby 2 (PS1), Destruction Derby 64, Flatout series and Mayhem 3D all do this.

DAG

Drakan: The Ancient's Gates is 2002 PS2 exclusive action/adventure game I've never heard of. It seems really interesting with both 3rd person ground action and dragon flying. I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

ico

Saving one of the best for last. ICO! I've never finished this game, but I've tried it several different times.

That's all for now. I'll be hunting the bargain bins at my comic shop for more as usual.

That Ico ad is great!

Between the name and the focus on dragons, I assumed that Drakan was a precursor to Drakengard, which of course led to the Nier series, but I just looked it up and it turns out they are totally separate.

I was thrilled to see that. It's always cool to see a new illustration for a great game.

Too bad Drakan isn't linked to Nier. That would've been a cool legacy.

I think I remember that ICO ad. Was that in EGM? I miss that magazine. Now I get Game Informer monthly through my GameStop friend but I never actually get it in the mail like I'm supposed to.

Also, damn, these 2000s ads were really working that dark/edgy angle. I'm still upset they did that with Prince of Persia, even if throwing a Godsmack song on the TV ads and having the main character call a woman a bitch early in the game sold more copies. Blech.

Got it from a comic. I miss EGM, OXM, PSM... all the Ms. I get GI in the mail still. I had it digital for a while, but I just don't like reading it that way. The print version is still a bit hard on my eyes. They shrunk the text to make it less pages, but I'm okay now with reading glasses.

Dark, edgy and at times very sexist. I just found a bunch more and one of them is like the very epitome of a sexist ad, in 2001 no less. What were they thinking? You'll see it soon in a blog upcoming.
