1987 in Gaming

Lots of stuff of interest to me this year. Mostly in retrospec because all I had that year was arcades and a Mac Plus computer.

Lots of RPGs I'd like to check out or return to like: Dragon Quest II, Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, Legend of Zelda and Zelda II, Ys I, and Dungeon Master. I have a way to play most of these right now, but a few I'll have to get somehow.

Lots of shooters too like: 1943: Battle for Midway, Flying Shark (also called Sky Shark), Darius, and Fantasy Zone. I can play all of these one way or another.

Other stuff is as follows: Guantlet II, Castlevania, Sid Meier's Pirates and Beyond Dark Castle

I played 1943 and Sky Shark in the arcades at the time. I had Beyond Dark Castle on my Mac Plus. All the NES, Sega Master System, TG-16 and PC games I had no notion of at the time.

I'm going to take my Switch with me to my place of gaming from now on and use it as a portable device since I've used all three inputs to my TV already. I'll have the best access to as many of these games as have been rereleased on Xbox Series S, PS4 and Switch. But I have a Retron hooked up as well for the few NES and SNES titles I own. I may also have to bring a DS for Ys I if I get a copy of Ys Book I & II for that. Maybe I have it already? I'll have to check.

So if you have to choose between Zelda 1 and 2, I'd pick Zelda 1.  To this day that's still one of my favorite Zeldas, and the second one is way too hard and one of the few Zelda games I never finished on my own.

I really like the Ys games.  Purists may not like it, but I enjoyed playing the first one on my DS.  Such great music in those games, too.

For shooters, I know you know that I like 1943.  I also really like Fantasy Zone but it's way too hard.  I also really enjoy Darius.  Another one of my top favorite shooters.  The first stage music "Captain NEO" is one of my top favorite video game tunes ever.

Mega Man came out in 1987...

I think  I may be trading my PSP Ys I & II because my PSP isn't working. I'm going to try and see if that DS version is affordable.

The dates are always a little screwy on wiki. I didn't care to look closely at which dates were for Japan or US. I'm also looking at awards lists and a lot of times the previous year's games are on them. For my use, I really don't care. I just need a list of 80s games to go play. I should title it "Roughly 1987 in Gaming". If you pay me though, I'll make sure to get the dates right. haha.

Of these, I think Castlevania is my favorite.

I tried the beat that first flying vampire mini boss again to no avail. I feel like I played the level much better though. I had no trouble getting to that point this time.

Pro-tip: stand in one corner and throw the crosses that go in an arc pattern at him.

Gotcha. Will try that.

I played Zelda when it came out in the US in 1987. It was the most amazing game I'd ever played up until that point. I have a tattoo of the Triforce on my left leg.
