This Week's Bats

Oh, watched the whole first disc of Batman The Animated series and discovered this video game show called Video Power. It's from the 90s. It has a kid DJ who gives you tips on games before and after a pretty lame animated cartoon. I just skip the cartoon and see what he has to say about Shinobi or whatever game it is that episode. Commercials plug the Tiger handheld games relentlessly in the first episode. Aside from the watching, there's the playing disclosed below.

First, games on Game Pass played for rewards points:

Halo: Master Chief Collection: I played multiplayer for 5 kills. It was a 4v4 on Blood Gulch I want to say. I forget the map names but this was one of the first and most favorite. It's very simple. Just two bases just yards apart. I got my kills and out. It's just the right amount of multiplayer for me. I can't stand just going head-to-head.

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem: More of the same as in SS4, which is just fine. I love a simple FPS adventure from time to time. I use this game to get my daily GP plays and achievements. I unlocked the ability to ride rideable enemies and so I did it every chance I could. Just silly fun. My friend commented that this could've been a Duke Nukem game, so why didn't Gearbox just do a game like Serious Sam but with Duke. Well, Sam drops Duke lines all the time, so this IS the Dukey game.

SSSM

Main Game:

Earth Defense Force 2025: Oh yes, it's still going on mostly on multiplayer. My friend and I got in with another "whale" of a player and ran half of the levels at Hardest difficulty. I was using my Air Raider and so accumulated a lot of new weapons. I spent most of the levels running around gathering pickups while my friend and the "whale" ripped through the levels at astounding speed. The "whale" guy had the armor/weapon limits off so each of them could use their mondo OP weapons. I discoverd the fastest vehicle to use for gathering pickups was the tank. The mech I started with was good but not nearly as fast.

Retro:

Phantasy Star II: I played this on Sega Genesis Classics and didn't even venture out of the town because no one would tell me where the Biolab was. Who sends you on a quest and doesn't even give you a map or even tell you a general direction? I suppose I might look up a map online but this lack of direction in a game made me too mad to continue this week.

Magic Sword: Played it in Capcom Arcade Stadium 2. A very nice side-scrolling brawler. I played the challenge modes, first tackling the time to complete the game. I think this has something like 50 levels and it was taking a very long time. I eventually let myself die. I didn't get ranked but I racked up a lot of in-game points and unlocked a few achievements for doing so.

Final Fight: Played on Capcom Beat 'em Up Bundle. Super fun. I always loved this game. Give me a turkey out of a oil can, yeah! I played through many of the bosses but stopped at some point for a reason I can't remember. Probably because the bosses can get really crazy unfair and annoying. Darn quarter munchers.

Castlevania III: Called Dracula's Curse. Played on the Anniversary Collection. I quite liked this for a while but there comes a point at some critical mass of deaths that I can't stand it no more.

Mega Man 3: Played on the Legacy Collection. I liked the controls right away and thought I would get deep into it, but it's darn hard right from the outset. Don't they know your supposed to ramp up the difficulty as you go? I'd like to enjoy at least the first half hour of these platformers.

Pinball Arcade: With little time left at the end of all this gaming, I started going through the list of 90s released games in this collection, buying whatever packs I needed. I gave myself the requirement to at least get on the local leaderboard for score before I moved on to the next machine. My favorite was Tee-d Off. This golf themed game has a flipper feel I like, a little less difficult with the balls reacting a little less excitedly to the touch. It was easier to trap in other words. I find it really difficult to execute most of the objectives on these tables. Pinball is such a game of chance until you get some kind of second sense for controlling the ball's movement. Not easy.

That's a week. I'm still progressing in my phone games, MS Suduku, Mahjong and Wordament. I have a few more medals to get from daily challenges in each that will keep me at it for several more months.

Top Man's stage is the easiest in MM3.  That's what I start with.

I'm going to try MM4 next but maybe I'll give MM3 one more shot with that level.

NES Hard strikes again.

Still with the arcade mentality I guess. You'd think they could give us at least one mostly easy level though to get started.

I think in the NES days, it was more about extending the length of the game by making it hard so the player didn't feel cheated by so few levels. At least, I'm pretty sure these games were made with a home audience in mind (Castlevania and Mega Man) but I guess you're still right in the sense that those games may have mimicked arcade platformers.

I dunno. Don't listen to me.

You're explanation is the one I usually hear, and it's probably right. Memory limitations are the culprit I guess.
