Last Couple Days Gamin'

Most of my gaming's been done this week. I write this waiting for an oil change before continuing one more day. With time to kill, I thought I'd write down what I've played so far.

Game Pass Rewards Games:

I had a real trial trying to get just one achievement in a Game Pass game. I kept having trouble like getting lost or killed. First was playing Serious Sam Siberian Mayhem on normal difficulty and getting killed by those bone-horses. Bullets seem to go right through them and they are surprisingly tough. I'd like to melee every single one of them by pulling off their jaws but there are always too many of them. Bah.

Then there was Wolfenstein Old Blood. I got lost on a level, searched everywhere, couldn't find the entrance to the next area. How many times do I have to comb every corner to find that one trap door or corner that I missed? The map was no help either. This game looks and sounds so amazing though. It was interesting comparing the feel of the controls with Serious Sam. Wolfenstein's movement is much slower but much more acurate. Man is it great to pull a chain gun off its mount and let 'er rip.

Quake II was next. I lingered over all the development documents and E3 demos and such before beginning the main game. It's realy great they remastered this, added the N64 version, and released it on Game Pass. I got lost again though traveling on tram cars back and forth trying to find entrance to the next area. So annoying. I ain't got all day, people!

Banjo-Tooie chosen at random. I picked up where I left off and still couldn't figure out how to gain more puzzle pieces. Every building is empty and asking NPCs just repeats the same old thing, get me more puzzle pieces. Why is this so confusing?

Finally I got lucky with a new game, Chicory: A Colorful Tale. You traverse a 16 bit style black and white world with a brush adding color and using color to change the environment to find new areas and get things you need. I kept playing after the first achievement until I, surprise, got stuck with no apparent way to progress. Screens are fixed instead of scrolling. I used color to reduce trees so I could pass them, but still kept hitting dead ends. Well, I'm probably stupid, but I had no patience to keep on keeping on. As I said, I ain't got all day!

Social Game:

Earth Defence Force 2025. I worked on my Wing Diver and cleared all the easy levels I hadn't done on single player. Then I tackled the last 15 levels on Hard getting to the very last level and then failed it several times. It made me so angry because I would get to the last few moments and get overwelmed by dragons. I moved on to multiplayer to cool down. My friend Mark (Mad Krammer) and I played levels on Hardest until a whale of a player showed up. We had him host so we could turn off all the weapon/armor limits and then cruised through many levels before I had to stop for the day. Once the limits are removed by a player who's completed 70% or more of the game, the game gets much more manageable. That's what we look for most while online.

Retro:

Not yet. I do a run at EDF2025 with one of my characters on a given day before hitting the retro. Later today I'll work on my Air Raider until complete failure and then do retro. I've got a lot to get to.

That's some FPS whiplash going between games made so many years apart! I think Old Blood is the only one of the newer Wolfensteins that I don't own but I've only played the first one.

Machine Games is so darn good. They did all the new Wolfenstein games and spinoffs. I can't wait to see what they're going to do next. The rumor is it's a Indiana Jones game of all things.

I still need to finish Chicory. There were definitely some puzzles that got to be a bit too much though.

If you give me more specific details, I might be able to help you in Banjo-Tooie.  I played that one to death on the N64, and I got all the achievements when it came to Xbox 360.

I just finished Illusion Island, so I finally got around to playing a game I got last Christmas called Ace Angler: Fishing Spirits.  It's based on an arcade game and the Switch version has a theme park and an aquarium you can walk around, kind of like Animal Crossing.  I may write a blog about it in another month or two, since my plans for writing a blog on Everybody 1 2 Switch fell through.  I wanted to talk about all the mini-games in that one, but since they pick them for you randomly, that would've been too hard to do.

I reviewed that Chicory game as well.

I'll probably have to start over in Banjo-Tooie and figure out what I'm doing wrong. It's a problem coming back to a game a year or more later than you started it.

Ace Angler looks neat!

Chicory was cool, but I don't like getting lost.
