This Week's Astro Boys

Not the losers of the World Series but the ones drawn by Osamu Tezuka and animated in a tv series - you know, the really important stuff. Not having the 1963 series, I watched some episodes of the 2003 Astro Boy. It's pretty good. Great animation. Sometimes a very kids oriented story in some episodes but still enjoyable to aged me. Mad Krammer just bought the '63 series, so I'll get to that soon. Anyway, gaming.

Dragon Age Inquisition: Eventually got killed trying to avoid an encounter with a rift I thought I might not be ready for. My team didn't seem to get the memo and rushed in without me. It brought the enemy to me and I died, as predicted, pretty quickly. Bah! I play permadeath with games now, so I put it down for a while. I want to return though. Maybe I'll start from the beginning again.

Costume Quest 2: Why has Microsoft chosen this game for Game Pass rewards points every Halloween for as long as I can remember? It's a good game, but there are a lot of choices these days. How about the excellent Carrion? I want to play that again. Anyway, I got my 200 candy and out. I could play all of it again to get that last costume I missed years ago, but it'll take too long.

Headbangers: Rhythm Royale: Just a straight up rhythm game I tried on Game Pass. I use the daily rewards to try whatever's new in Game Pass and this was a quick download; although, it would work just fine streaming I'm guessing. The best thing was whipping my weird turkey head around with the left stick making it cluck. Um, these "turkeys" look very suspiciously like a certain body part. Intentional?

Diablo IV: There's a free 10 hour demo available on Xbox, so I started it and played a few hours. Seems good. I'll play the full game eventually when the sale price gets to where I like it.

EDF 2025: A very infuriating grind to get those last achievements but made good progress this week. I only need about four levels to finish all but Inferno for my characters. I'm helping Mad Krammer get his though, so I've been messing around with equipment and gathering armor drops while he completes missions. "Whale Time" is about 3 to 3:30 any particular day. This means the power users show up and help us beat those Hardest and Inferno levels. TalipedDruby is our favorite at the moment. He's got everything and has about 40k armor. Bigger "whales" are out there though. One is called The Professional and has 500K armor. How he did this is beyond me. I've crunched the numbers many times, and it seems like it would take thousands of hours to do that. Anyway, getting close to 100% achievements in this game.

Jusant: Walking simulator? This is a climbing simulator. You just climb and climb a supernaturally tall mountain using carabiners and rope. The views are great and there is a story to unravel every ledge you get to. You use the left and right triggers to reach out to grab handholds as you climb. You can also repel and jump. I'm enjoying it for my daily achievement on Game Pass.

Suduko/Mahjong/Wordament/Pikmin Bloom (Android): Might as well bundle all the mobile games together. I just need bronze and silver medals in Suduko and Mahjong, a few more Gold for Wordament. Pikmin Blood (that's a slip! Bloom. Maybe I'd like Pikmin Blood better?) is still fun. I find excuses to walk so I can plant flowers. I like joining other players for mushroom battles. That's almost like Street Pass on 3DS. I'm somewhat wondering where it's all going though, just more cosmetic items for your character?

Disney Infinity (3DS): I put the batteries in the tiny figure portal and scanned in a few characters to the game: Sorcerer Mickey, Randall Boggs (Monsters Inc.) and Francesco Bernoulli (the F1 from Cars). It's all mini games. The story mode strings together the mini games into a board game where you compete against AI teams. The mini games are like Game & Watch level simplicity and I got tired of them after a while. Well, it was fun to see how you scan figures into the 3DS at least. I'll try it again for Skylanders later.

That's a week. What have you played?

I need to request a review copy of that Headbangers game.

I'm a big fan of Astro Boy.  Very influential cartoon.  Capcom denies that Astro Boy inspired Mega Man, but I call BS on that one.  The 2003 version was very good.  They used the animation frame speed of a theatrical release cartoon, not a Saturday morning one, so that's why it looked so good.  Also, Astro Boy: Omega Factor is one of the best GBA action games out there.

Totally influenced MegaMan with that arm cannon.

I just watched the first episode of the original Astro Boy. I have a disc with the first 5 episodes to watch but my friend is getting the complete collection soon.

I'll keep an eye out for the GBA game.
