On Switch This Week

I'm surprising myself by actually sticking to a few titles for long periods instead of jumping all around.

Super Mario RPG: I dug into this and nearly finished it. I'm on the last star and am stuck on the area with six doors behind which are six challenges: two puzzle, two platform, and two battle. I beat the battle ones, but I can't quite finish the others yet. I loathe repeating challenges over and over, and so I put the game down for a while to cool off (I nearly brained myself in frustration). Otherwise I love the game. Only occasionally was I at a loss as to how to get to the next area, most notably getting to the cliff at Lands End. That, I had to look up (oh, also finding the back door to the castle on Nimbus Village).

Yoshi: I started looking into the things you can do for points on Switch, and one of them this week was to play the NES game Yoshi. It's a nice little Tetris style game. I like that the eggshells will match anywhere in a stack and create a new Yoshi. Fun.

Lego Fortnite: Another challenge for points was to play an game with an online aspect, and so I chose Lego Fortnite (free). I wondered why I couldn't change my lego character at all, only choose its clothes and equipment. Also, constructing my first building wasn't working, and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Seemed a tad unintuitive. But, it's based strongly on Minecraft, and is a sandbox game and not one where everyone tries to kill you constantly, so I like that. Not putting up with annoying building mechanics though.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Dark Prince: Bought this after playing the demo and liking it. I'm humming along to the music I'm so familiar with from DQ VIII and XI. I love collecting the monsters and naming them. The full version carries over your stable of critters from the demo but restarts the game with a new character. So I am getting more of the story now. I'm only just getting to where I left off in the demo, but I'm hooked and will be playing this alot in the next few weeks.

What have you been playing?

I'm still crossing my fingers and hoping I can finish Tears of the Kingdom before the end of the year.

Good luck.

I used a guide to get through the puzzle doors in Bowser's Keep on Mario RPG.  I just don't have time for that anymore.  The action rooms were a lot easier on the SNES because the Switch JoyCon controllers suck.

Did you know that Yoshi puzzle game was made by GameFreak, the same folks who made a little known game you might've heard of all Pokemon?

I sort of got used to the joycon's sticks but they constantly make me move to far when I'm trying to position myself on a platform.

I forgot GameFreak did Yoshi. That's cool.

I wonder if you've got JoyCon drift?

I thought I sensed something like that once, but I think it was just my thumb. I have that problem on my Xbox controller, which I'll have to replace sometime next year.

Huh.  I didn't know the Xbox controllers were prone to that.  The Switch is BAD for that.  It happened to me twice.  One of the reasons why the Switch is not my favorite Nintendo console (nothing beats SNES).  Sadly, the Switch has most of what I want to play right now.

Well, I think I dropped my Xbox controller once or twice and it landed on one of the sticks and did something to it. Darn that vibration freeback feature. Every time I put the controller down the vibration shakes it off a table. i should just turn it off.

That's a strong vibration if it shakes itself off a table.  Also, if you put the controller down and are not playing, how is it still vibrating?  Is your Xbox haunted? :)

When Mad Krammer and I were playing EDF2025 online, sometimes my chartacter would get knocked down, and I would be waiting to get revived. I'd put the controller down on a table and go get a snack. Then I'd hear the explosions and my controller shaking itself to the edge of the table and then onto the floor. I was always surprised it moved so far on its own.

They all are prone to drift. PS5, Xbox, and the joycons. The Switch Pro Controller works great, though.

I have a Switch Pro Controller. I've had it for four years and it still works perfectly, not the least hint of drift.

I'm thinking of getting a pro controller for Switch.
