All Laid Down for Shadow Wars

I started this weekend playing Pandora's Tower but quit out of it after beating the first few bosses because the fighting controls really were uncomfortable using the Wiimote and Nunchuck.  I just couldn't get into any groove. When I started to get surrounded by foes ala God of War (and the more I played of this the more I thought of God of War or Rygar), my attacks wouldn't happen fast enough and I started to die a lot. I tried the classic controler but no matter what button a pushed, I couldn't use my chain. Rather than read up on the controls, I just moved on to Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is so great, but I got stuck in a room with ghosts covering their faces with shovels. They looked so cute holding those shovels to stop me from flashing them with my flashlight, but I had to capture them somehow. Nothing seemed to work. I tried to remove the shovels with my Poltergust 5000 vacuum, no go. Then waited for them to lunge, dodge them, and surprise them with a flash of my flashlight, but all I flashed was their backs. Perhaps, I thought, I have to throw something at them, but the gourd to do that was in the next room, and you can't move items from room to room. I was at a loss, so I put the game down... for now and ran out to Gamestop to get the 3DS game I've always wanted Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars was under $10 at Gamestop - the right price.I've wanted it since its release as a 3DS launch game. It's a turn-based strategy game directed by Jullian Gollop who did the original X-Com series for PC and PSone.Only a couple missions into it I knew this was good and played it all the rest of Sunday. It's hard to describe just what sets this appart from all the other turn-based strategy games I've played on handhelds. Maybe its the way it teaches you the different skills over the missions so that you have a strong grasp of the mechanics of the game once you start in on the harder missions. Or maybe it's the wonderful maps, and intuitive controls, or the simplicity of the overall design. The main thing though that I like is the way the game lets you improvise various solutions to each map. This is something a game series like Advance Wars didn't have and made that game frustrating to me on the harder levels. TCGR: Shadow Wars has everything I love in turn-based strategy games. It's perfect!

I've wanted to get Shadow Wars for a while now but I have yet to see a used copy of it and stores are still selling it for $20 new (at least the ones I've seen). I've heard good things and you're certainly adding to that. Hopefully I'll find it sometime soon...

Lots of Gamestops in my area had it for $10. If I had a retail store near me at the time I would've wanted to get it new. At $20 I might just buy it again just to give the developers some. It's damn worth it.

Hey, I know! Send me your copy and then you can buy a new one! Tongue Out

I've talked about Shadow Wars plenty in the past. It was a great filler between Fire Emblem. It's a pretty long game.

I'll look up any blogs you've done on the subject.

The shovel ghosts can be tricky.  If you time it right you can stun them with your light after they lunge at you.

That's what I was trying to do! Damn it! Aren't they adorable though?

I like the ghost dog.  Luigi should keep him as a pet.

Yea, but he steals his bones.
