Awesome New Releases!

Hey guys! I've been playing some games, as I tend to do, and I thought I'd let you know of three that I four that were just released on Steam that you absolutely should pick up!

The Swapper

Ok, I don't mean to alarm anyone, but this may just be the best puzzle platformer I've played since... well, probably Braid. The game never reaches the difficulty of that game, although some of the puzzles really hurt your head, but in terms of game mechanics being central to the storytelling, raising morally ambiguous questions with no right answers, and oozing with atmosphere, these games are damn close to being on the same level.

The game's levels and characters were made out of clay using stop motion, and it runs at over 60 fps, which is kind of amazing. I mean seriously. The lighting effects are gorgeous, and the music and ambient noise is phenomenal. Seriously, whilst Braid was visually stunning, this beauty for your ears.

The central premise of this game revolves around cloning yourself and swapping to those clones. There are areas where you can't make clones, or where you can make a clone but can't swap to it, or where you can't do either, and getting around that is really what the puzzles boil down to. The story is pretty awesome, although the voice acting is a little bit muffled, so you might want to chuck subtitles on. Seriously, check this out.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

This is what the real Diablo 3 should have felt like in terms of atmosphere and storytelling. This is an Action RPG where the world actually feels alive, and you want to explore it. The 18th century gothic horror vibe is fantastic too, and there's a genuinely forboding atmosphere to the game.

The dialogue is quite well written as well. The story isn't great, but the interaction between characters is, especially the central two. You play as Van Helsing, and you have a ghostly follower who acts a lot like a pet from the Torchlight games. The dialogue between them can be touching and in some cases quite funny, and she can often cast light into the darker secrets of the world.

The combat feels good and is surprisingly complex. While you only play as one character, you can level up magic, melee, and sorcery. Mastering all three is pivotal, as this game can be quite challenging on the normal difficulty.

All this is $15, so if you're a fan of Diablo, Torchlight, or Titan's quest, you should definitely pick this up.

Gunpoint

I love this game. It's a stealthy hacking game where you can rewire elecrical circuits to get through levels and avoid guards. This opens up so many options for experimentation, especially when you unlock all of the gadgets. My favourite thing to do is rewire a guards gun to something and have him freak out before I tackle him and beat the living shit out of him. I once rewired a guards gun to an electrical socket he was standing next to, walked in front of him, he went to shoot me and ended up electricuting him. It was hilarious!

Another aspect of this game I like is the mission briefinf and debriefing. You get dialogue choices, can choose who you want to side with, who to lie to, and try and cover for yourself and/or others. For instance, the first few missions are about you erasing video tapes to hide the evidence of you being in the same building as a murder to buy yourself time to investigate the case. Once you do that, a woman is thrown into jail and comes to you trying to get evidence to clear her since all of the tapes have been erased. You can tell her it was you who erased the tapes, or you can lie to her, and send her back super encrypted files that she can't possibly access. I told her, and she ended up hating me. I got no more missions from her. Also, some of the dialogue options are downright hilarious, causing me to laugh out loud numerous times.

Oh, and this game was made by one of the writers of PC Gamer, a site I regularly visit for my news and reviews. I think that's pretty cool.

Anyway, those are the three games I've been playing that I think are truly worth playing. Hope you give them a shot some time in the future!

I finished Van Helsing a few days ago, it's about 20+ hours long and well worth the price. I actually prefer it to Diablo and Torchlight if only because those games had cartoonish art design, wheareas Van Helsing had more realistic looking environments and architecture. I would stick to one class type and focus on it because the end is ridiculously unbalanced and difficult, so the placement of skills and abilities points is crucial. Multiplayer was problematic at times, but I went solo anyway. I look forward to updates and DLC for this game. Really cool game.Cool I also look forward to new game releases from this game company in the future.

Have you heard anything about Grim Dawn? I haven't played it, but the graphics are quite similar to this. Look it up!

I haven't gotten far into the game, I'm up to the second hub area, but what I've seen it's pretty damn brilliant.

I'm really interested in the new Van Helsing. I saw one of my friends mentioning on Facebook that he's been addicted to it as of lately, so that only intrigues me further!

Yeah, well as I said, it's fifteen bucks, and it's damn good. Over 20 hours, as Asreal said. Well worth it, as we both said :)

I haven't heard of Grim Dawn before. Van Helsing seems similar to Path of Exile which I haven't played either. I read a bunch of good reviews that popped up when Van Helsing released and that convinced me to buy it. The reviews were right.

Warning on Van Helsing. You should be able to take your solo character into multiplayer if the game gets too hard, but after the latest patch the developers advised not to do that due to game errors. So you should only use your Multiplayer character with multiplayer mode. There were moments near the end of the game when I would teleport to a new area and I would be shot and killed before taking a single step into the new area. Maybe I was playing a pre-patched version, but it was very frustrating. I'm still not sure how I beat the damned game.

Wow. Um... that's intense. It's hard where I am at the moment, so I believe you though. What did you invest most in? I'm going for guns atm.

Use solo for solo mode, and use multiplayer for multiplayer mode. I chose a melee character so I just leveled up the electric, fire and ice skills. If you are going ranged then just level up ranged skills and dont try to balance melee and range, bad idea.

Is magic any good? I think I might respec my character as I'm still getting obliterated in certain areas.

When I started  playing the game there was no community, so I had to do it old school and play without help from the internet, what is this the 90s? But now there is a lively community on the dev site with tips and builds on how to take advantage of the games systems. As usual with these types of ARPGs you character build is crucial and you will realize your mistakes at the end of the game and then need to restart with a new character or respec. It's old school in that way. For melee, I used basic melee, or electric swords and for secondary I used flames and for end game leveled up Ice. Also used weapons with high DPS (Damage per second) stats.

wow these all look good.  The Swapper is very intriguing, I've been reading about it.

It's a bit short. I finished it in about 5-6 hours, and smarter people will finish it even quicker. I still think it's worth it though.

Van Helsing looks really cool! I wish there was a demo so I could see if my laptop could handle it. I had noticed Gunpoint and was wondering about it. I might pick it up soon. I spent too much money already this month. Money Mouth

Van Helsing is a bit of a CPU whore max settings, low settings you should have no problems with it, as it does look like a really dated game on low. It looks magnificent on high though, and even my high mid range pc can't max it out without a significant fps hit. There's no demo, so maybe pirate it to see if you can play it? Normally i wouldn't recommend pirating it but in this case it might be wise.

I really do recommend Gunpoint though. It's one of the best games I've played this year.

I think I'll pass on Van Helsing for now. I still got to finish Torchlight II after all. I don't know why it's taken me so long. I did play the demo for Gunpoint though. It took me a little while to get used to it, but seems really fun. I'm definitely gonna get it next month. Thanks for mentioning it.

Do any of these have Mac versions or are they PC-only? Gunpoint in particular sounds really cool.

Van Helsing and The Swapper are, Gunpoint isn't yet, but they are planning on it.

Cool! That's good news. Macs have gotten shafted on games for a long time but recently the trend seems to be to put out a Mac version (and sometimes one for Linux too) in addition to the normal PC version. At least, a lot of smaller/indie developers are doing that and let's face it, that's where all the interesting games are coming from anyway Smile

Steam is trying to convert all new releases to Mac now, as Gabe hates Windows 8 and wants to move to Linux. You'll see a lot more coming.

The Swapper is on my list of games that I want to play... sadly I may never get around to it.

That would be a shame! It is a great experience.

Steam is so awesome! I've got to get into these games. I've got to get my old PCs up and running again and call them new Steam consoles!

You should! Steam saves me so much money! As does Humble Bundles!

Now you intrigued me to try The Swapper. I'll try to look videos about it and see if it catches my interest. Then again, I really liked Braid (despite some of the hate it sometimes has), so I guess I shouldn't have any problem with it.

Yeah. The atmosphere is a bit darker and even a little creepy at time, but the setting is kind of awesome, and the cloning mechanics are a lot of fun.

Gunpoint sounds like my kind of game.
