Immersing Myself in The Witcher's World

Well I'm on holidays from University at the moment, having finished the last of my exams and assignments and whatnot. So what shall I do with my rather large amount of free time? Well, I decided I was going to immerse myself into a universe! A universe that spans two games (soon to be three) and seven books. That's right, it's The Witcher universe!

 The Books

Well, I'm not reading all of the seven books, seeing how only three of the fuckers have been translated to English, and I only have like three weeks off. However, I did manage to stumble upon one book, and download the other because no one in Australia stocks the damned thing and I will be buggered by a horse before I import a series of short stories from overseas! So I torrented the ebook. Don't look at me like that, I already bought one book and two games in the universe, I'm a touch broke. And I figured with the metric shit ton of awards, a movie, a tv series, a bunch of graphic novels and two games I'm betting this Polish bastard couldn't fit in his own house because it's filled with all of the Orens he's getting from royalties!!!

Anyway, I started reading the series of short stories, and they were so bloody good I ended up buying the ebook on Amazon. You deserve to be rich Andrzej Sapkowski, you beautiful bastard! Seriously, from the first short story I was sold. It should be familiar to anyone who's played the first game, as the final fight is the pre menu cutscene. The dialogue is so well written, and the action scenes are among the best I've read in modern fantasy! Most of them seem to be darker versions of common tales, or at least some elements in them. The second short story is Beauty and the Beast with rape and Vampires.

I haven't started reading the novel yet, as the short stories take place before it and are heavily hinted at in the novel, but from what I can gather it involves the history of the Scoia'tel, and other awesome stuff like that. I highly advise you to read them!

The Witcher

As I will tell you in the next section, I've finished The Witcher 2 twice now, and I've started up a third playthrough, however, I had never finished the original. Hell, I'd never gotten past the first chapter. The story wasn't as immediately compelling, the voice acting is a bit shit, the combat was a bit weird, and the quests were kind of boring in places.

Well, I'm finally jumping in properly, and this time I'm enjoying it. The combat still isn't amazing, but I'm enjoying the lore and atmosphere, and the monster variety is about 10000000 times the second game. This focuses more on monster hunting, which witchers are known for, rather than the political intrigue of the second game. The politics are still there, and it's still a very deep plot, but its focus is very different.

Overall, I still prefer the second game, but this is well worth a play as well. Very faithful to the books.

The Witcher 2

This is my second favourite rpg of this generation. Story wise, it takes the cake, but gameplay wise it plays second fiddle to Dark Souls for me. However, the world and plot in this game a simply staggering, and the visuals still make my jay drop. I still haven't seen textures this impressive in another game since!

As I said before, I'm on my third playthrough of this game, and I'm STILL discovering things! This is truly a testament to rpg design, and the fact that it comes from an indie company is even more staggering! If you haven't played this game yet - you're an idiot. Go play it now. Yes, the tutorial sucks, I know. If you have played it, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I'm off now to read some more of The Last Wish. See ya guys!

I'm about two hours into the first Witcher.  I really like it, but I got distracted.  I'm going to play more soon though, I really like it.

You'll get distracted a lot more before it's finished. It's a long fucking game lol.

The original Witcher is only for PC which is a shame, as some things aren't as meaningful without at least some knowledge of the first game.

Also, what do you mean by part 2?

Witcher 2 assasins of kings i assumed it was part 2 but not playing the first one it may not be.

Huh. Did not know there were Witcher books. That's cool. Thanks to my wife we actually have both of the games, though she didn't get very far in the first one and got stuck on the final boss (that dragon) of the second. I really ought to play them. It's just hard starting RPGs because I know they'll take a while to beat. I envy your free time, even if it is for just a couple of weeks. Anyway, I'm looking forward to CD Projekt's Cyberpunk game.

Yeah, The Witcher is an adaptation of the books, and the books are really good. Check out The Last Wish, as it's short stories, really easy to jump into and each only take like 10-20 minutes to read.

Yeah, they're both like 30-40 hours to beat, so it is a bit of a commitment. As for Cyberpunk, I'm very excited!

It gets like that lol. Definitely check it out if you get a chance, the ebooks are pretty darn cheap.

Happy time off! And Beauty and the Beast with vampires and rape, you say? Classic Disney. Why, just take those old Grimm Fairy Tales and traditional French stories and make them dark, you dastardly mouse.

Also, while I don't do it myself, I'm not judging if you can't buy something, and the only way to get it is to download, especially as long as you are supporting the creator in other ways, which is impressive, cause I've seen Australian prices and they're more frightening than koala bears, and those fuckers have damn sharp teeth!

On PC they aren't so bad, which is one of the main reasons I use it. GoG is fantastic, and it released the witcher for 40 bucks on day one because CD Projekt think that 60 bucks is too high. Steam sales are cheap as well, but the average game costs us 100 bucks, which really sucks!

That's not all the Witcher novels are about, but most of them are about subversion of fantasy tropes, and it's just really fun to read.

Yeah, still one I really need to check out, I don't get my usual awesome hjolidays yet though because I can't actually teach at the mo. I miss my 12 weeks off a year!

Yeah, well I'm studying to be a teacher, so I'll hopefully always get heaps of time off! Why can't you teach?

Hopefully within the next few weeks I will be able to, The Aussies require a shit load of paperwork in order for me to 'prove' that I can teach and even then I have to do a ridculous ammount of extra work for standards, despite the fact I ve been a teacher for nearly seven years and three of them were at head of department level.... deep breaths..... to be honest though I'm just looking forward to getting back into a class room ASAP. I miss being told to F off

Fair enough. What do you teach? I'm only studying for primary education, so I'm dealing with proper kids, not arrogant teenagers lol.

Art and design, I quickly realised after leaving Uni that you don't need a degree to be an artist, so I went into teaching to give it some purpose, though I ended up really enjoying the job so stuck at it.

Witcher 1 ran out of Steam. Got tired of running back and forth over my tracks for quests. Kind of poorly designed in that way, if you ask me.  Wasn't intrigued by the over-arching story either, and part of that has do with the errand running breaking the flow. I assume whatever faction I was sympathetic with will prevail over the other. Still have the saves, so maybe in the future when I have plenty of free time.  Do want to check out 2 though.

The quests are a lot better than one. They aren't as errandy and feel a bit more natural. I would recommend reading the books though.
