Today's blog - how an international folk music forum grieves when one of their own dies.

My friend Kat died in the wee hours of the morning on July 22nd. She was a friend, a mentor, a confidant, and a peacemaker on the forum. She wasn't a saint, but she was a very good person and friend. She was only 60, which, when you're in your 40s, isn't all that old. She has left a huge hole in our folk music community that is going to take a while to heal. There are so many, many of us from all over the world who are reeling from the news of her passing and were feeling adrift. One of her closest friends on the forum decided that the best way to heal for all of us was through what brought us all together in the first place - music. Catspaw49 set up a virtual song circle and we have all been contributing, some with snippets of our own music, others with lyrics of favorite songs, and some with YouTube videos. The thread is here for anyone who is interested, but I'm going to post some of the YouTube videos here. Many of these songs may be sung by more famous people, or may be more polished elsewhere, but they aren't the ones missing our friend Kat.

I didn't do my usual intros, except for a couple of songs. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask away.

There's always one in the bunch. Sigh. Parting Friends by Isla (the female singer happens to be my cousin).

The next song starts about two minutes in, but it's worth listening to Utah's introduction.

Oh, and as always, the playlist.

She wasnt a Saint.   But really, Who Is?  I am sorry for your loss Tami but I am happy to see that you and your circle of friends have found a way to grieve and at the same time honor and remember your friend.  And as for 60 being old....yeah, in 4 and 1/2 years I will be 60.  Hang in there my friend.  Im thinking of you.

Thanks, GH. And saints are boring, and Kat was anything but boring.

I'm sorry for your loss Tami. First Cary's grandma and now this. This kind of music really isn't my style, but I can definitely understand how music could bring people together. I'd probably go insane if I didn't have my 80's metal lol.

Aaron, I'm sure I can find something you'd like. Kind of a challenge now, lol. My co-worker Pete's niece died the same day as Kat, too. They say people go in threes, so who knows.

Thanks, Lee. A bunch of friends did the same thing for me when my dad died, even though none of them had known him.

But its still tough cause i have better freinds on the net then in person thats kinda the cool thing about  the internet and from all over the world when i was young you only had freinds you met. And you all here on pixlbit are almost like family cause i talj to all of you almost daily abd my entire time on pixlbit not one person has ever been rude, mean or judgemental and thats rare even for the internet.

At least one of my parents is older than 60, so it really is not that old to me either.

I am sorry for your loss. Musiccan definitely bring people together.

I definitely enjoyed "Parting Friends," it has that haunting quality I really like in folk music, and your cousin has a great voice. I liked Utah's speaking voice as well. Interesting to see you posted one that did not have instrumentation or singing really, more of a poem. And that one was called "The Concert."

The spoken word piece was Amergin's tribute to Kat that he'd written a couple of years ago because she'd been so supportive of him. Kat played mountain dulcimer. Utah was a close friend of my friend Kendall, and each admired the other to no end, so I've always liked that video where Utah introduces Kendall singing one of Utah's songs.

Sorry about the loss of your friend. I know how much the people in the folk community mean to you,so that is very sad. I love the songs you chose. Some of them are very touching. I think the one I liked best was "A Song For Dead Friends". Who is the fellow singing it? And yes....60 is far too young. For someone approaching 48 it does seem too soon to pass. It's good that she had friends like you who will always remember her contributions.

Hey Wayde! I knew you'd like most of these. I didn't choose the songs, they were all contributed on the thread Catspaw49 started. I just went through and snagged 14 that I liked off the thread. Well worth reading the thread itself, by the way. The fellow singing a song for dead friends is known as McGrath of Harlow on the folk forum. I only know his first name, which is Kevin, and he wrote that song. The actual title is Over the Edge of the World.
