The Game Buying Monkey is Off My Back

I just bought Uncharted 3 for under $10, and with that, I am finally feeling pretty satisfied with my games collection as it stands. I have a handful of titles from this and last year that I have to get, but they are not in any danger of being hard to find, and the longer I wait, the cheaper they will get. I can bide my time with them and watch for sales. In the mean time, I have plenty to do with what I have.

I didn’t think I would ever feel this way. It always seemed like there was continually something else I had to have. I chalk it all up to my new system of rating the games on my buy list by how much I want them: one to five stars with a five star meaning “I have to play it now”. With Uncharted 3, I now have all my must-have games from the current gen up through 2011.

The current generation of games is where my weakness lies, because they are so readily available in stores like GameStop and for so cheap. Online is a barrier to me because of my unreliable mailroom, but walking into a store is very easy – too easy.  With my new rating system, I finally got to the end of the list of games that lure me back into the stores.

It’s a good feeling; a relief. Now I can just look forward to the infrequent day-one purchases and keep an eye on sales for the must-haves of last year that I missed.

Donkey Kong is off my back, and I am free to think such higher thoughts as Kierkegaard.

The game buying monkey has been off my back since September 17 and will remain so for another 3 weeks. It actually bothers me that I can't go into any video game/electronics store but I have accepted it. Even after the PS4 launch, it has to continue a bit unless PSN has some great games beyond the PS+ stuff.

I'm getting myself a seat to watch the crazy-go-nuts buying public this November. Who's going to win this battle of the consoles: Sony or Microsoft. Or will Nintendo come out of nowhere and sell out the Wii-U for Christmas for no apparent reason? I'm getting some carmel corn and a coffee and enjoy the show.

If Sony gets a tie in the U.S. and U.K. markets this time around, that's a win for them. My only gripe is that I'm going to have to hear the voices of little kids online now that the PS4 has a headset in the box. I rarely play online as is. I don't feel like telling strangers my life story for 30-60 minutes.

Sony might beat Microsoft this time. I casually looked around for PS4 preorders and they were all sold out at many retailers; Xbox One though? No problem. Of course Sony could be holding back on supply to make it seem that way, so who knows really.

I'm afraid I'll never be finished.  I love going through my old videogame mags and I always find a game I forgot about or a game I have a new found interest in.

I know what you mean. I still have a humongous list of stuff, and I keep adding to it, but I've gotten the really important games. I feel I can go about buying stuff with less urgency now.

I should probably make a list but I'd have a super hard time rating them on what priority to get them in. And price plays such a big role for me right now since money is tight. I picked up Alpha Protocol not long ago, which is not a "must play" game for me, but I got it for $3. I do hope I can fill out my collections in the coming year or two as the old systems are phased out.

I totally remember doing this mad buying at the end of last gen too. As 360 and PS3 came out, I was scouring Gamestops for Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube titles on their buy2get1free sale every week, or sometimes every few days.

I got into this list thing because I got obsessed with Allgame.com's database. I would spend hours scanning through their lists and then make my own. It got overwelming, so many interesting titles from every era of gaming, so I started rating them ala Netflix to make sense of it all.

I think I never had much of a monkey in my back when it comes to videogames. Sure, I keep thinking on games to get, but due to the expensive prizes of games in Colombia and the fact that I only choose to get games on the internet when there's special occasions, i'm pretty moderate with my gaming buys and I consider that every new game I get is late to the party.

It can be good to have some barriers to getting new games. You value the ones you have and obsess over them less. I can always pick up an under $10 game any day of the week at one of a dozen Gamestops in my area. It makes me a little crazy.

Good to see that someone has that monkey off their back. I'm at the point where I think I'm good...and then I find something else and BOOM, new games added to Mount Backlog.

I'm looking ahead to several games but only the ones that I really, really want. I know that feeling when I think about a game and I get all reved up. Other games are interesting to me and I want to play them, but others take it to the next level. Those are the ones I'm focusing on. It's a manageable number of games. The best of the best in my humble opinion.

The only upcoming game with the exception of Dark Souls II that I feel like I need to own is Batman Origins. I honestly can't explain why I feel that I need to own it, I just do. Perhaps, it's because I own and beat the previous installments, and I'm curious to see how the new developer handles a prequel?

I've only got Ratchet & Clank Into the Nexus that I have to have day one this holiday. I want to play Assassin's Creed IV and Batman Origins badly, but I don't feel the need to get them day-one for some reason.

I thought that I was done getting games for a while, and then I was inspired to play El Shaddai and so I had to pick that up.  Then I swore off buying games until I realized that I really want the Arkham Origins games.

There's always something else for sure. I've just finished getting those games that I have some irrational fear they will disappear forever.

Does that game no longer have PSN Pass? I keep seeing how the Uncharted 3's multiplayer is now free for all on PSN.

According to Wiki, Uncharted 3's multiplayer was established in February as free-to-play up to level 15. You don't need the disc or anything for that, but to go beyond level 15 you either have to pay something or own the Uncharted 3 disc.
