Sorry I've been absent lately. Dealing with situational depression, and it has been kicking my butt big time. I'm not going into details, let's just say that I'm in a serious blue funk and leave it at that. I apologize for not reading and commenting, some days getting my teeth brushed is a major accomplishment :(

Playing: Lego Marvel Superheroes is pretty much it. I'm going for as close to 100% as I can get. I love the Lego games, but they are glitchy messes that seem to get worse with each new game that is released. I have run into one bug that awards too many mini-kits in each level and won't let you unlock the comics in Deadpool's room. There's another one that freezes up your PS3 if you hold the square button down too long, and that's part of the main campaign. That said, I'm still having a lot of fun with it. I've only got nine more Stan Lees to rescue, about 40 gold bricks to find, and 15 characters left to unlock. I also have about five vehicles left to find and unlock, too.  A few issues I have with the game are the way vehicles control. Think of the wonkiest, most ornery shopping cart you've ever tried to maneuver, multiply it by ten, and you get how well vehicles control. Flying is worse It's too bad, because you'd think flying around as Iron Man would be a lots of fun, but no, not so much. I think the hideous flight controls may be what keeps me from getting 100%, as there are a couple of races involving flying characters. Oh, well. I'll keep trying until the frustration gets to be too much.

Reading: I'm addicted to the Longmire series. I've read the first three and am jonesing for the rest. Hoping someone gets them for me for Christmas. I think this may be my second favorite mystery series of all time - Robert B. Parker's Spenser series will always be number one. I'm also about 30 pages into Stormdancer, the first book of The Lotus War series. It's steam punk, which I really like, and very well written so far.

Watching: Watched all three seasons of Justified available for free on Amazon Prime this week. Really like that show. Also watched an old western with Cary Grant called Shoot Out from 1971. Went nicely with Shane, which I watched last week. Jason was over and he picked out In Bruges, which was good, except that everyone dies. I hate movies like that. And I'm still working my way through NYPD Blue, CSI NY, Supernatural, Luther, and Dexter.

Listening: I think it's time to haul out the Christmas music. I need to get in the mood, because I'm too broke to do any Christmas shopping this year and I only have so much time left to make gifts...

(Unemployed) Ranger stuff: The "get to know the woods in your backyard" project is still underway. I only have one small corner left to explore. I'm kind of bummed about that. Most of the fun has been exploring the unknown. I am blessed (or cursed) with insatiable curiosity, so those unexplored paths beckon and whisper to me... I did get out in the woods this morning, I had to drop the car off for an oil change and have my snow tires put on and I came home through the woods. Mine were the first human footprints to tread those paths since the snow fell. Bandit and I came across quite a few animal tracks, though. Lots of fox prints, gray squirrels, red squirrels, deer, and possibly coyote. It wasn't the best tracking snow, however, so I didn't bother taking any pictures. It was awfully pretty out there, though.

woods

This pic was taken a few weeks ago before the snow and the wind storm that knocked a couple of the trees over.

I stopped by to visit my boss at the park last week. First thing I noticed when I drove in to the ranger cabin was a (relatively) small moose skull and jawbones. Score for the park! It was a young cow that got hit by a vehicle and had to be put down by a game warden. We have connections, and they were able to get the skull donated to the park for educational purposes. I'll get a pic later.

And that's a wrap for this update.

I really like In Bruges, but that has probably more to do with the one day that I spent there a couple years back.  It left such an impression with me that I really want to go back.  Going back to the movie, it was really neat seeing the landmarks and knowing that I had walked down those streets.

I loved the scenery in the movie. I lived in Europe for three years when I was a kid, and went back for three and a half months during the year I took off between high school and college. Never spent any time in Belgium other than between the train station and the airport in Brussels, though. The two cities I'd love to revisit are Paris and Luxembourg. I really loved Luxembourg.

Since I only spent a day in Paris, I would not mind going back there.  If I am in France ever again I will have to make my way back to Mont Saint-Michel.

I have never been to Luxembourg.  It is not necessarily high on my list, but I would not complain if I made my way there...

Luxembourg is quite possibly the coolest city I've ever been to. I never would have gone myself except that it used to be Iceland Air's main hub in Europe and they used to have really cheap tickets to Europe from Boston. The whole city is a mountain fortress with huge parks that make it seem like you're ot in the country. And the people were very friendly.

I've never completed a LEGO game 100 percent simply because of the all the bugs they have.  I just enjoy playing the main quest with Jeff and that's it.  One of my friends said it best when he claimed, "LEGO games aren't very good games, but they are very fun games."

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Marvel characters, though, so that's why I'm glad Jeff can tell me what's what in the game.  I should try and pick a favorite Marvel character, but I just don't know.

The only Lego game I've gotten 100% on i Lego Indy. I'm just missing one achievement, but the game is at 100%.

As for Marvel, well, my favorite character is Daredevil. I used to collect the comics from junior high through college. I've also always liked Nightcrawler, just not how they portrayed him in the movies.

Well the only thing I can say is that in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I liked to play as She Hulk because she was green and Phoenix Wright was in her ending.  But I don't think that's a good enough reason to like a character.

Ranger1

I dunno, Cary. Seems like as good a reason as any to me :)

Well I imagine people would look at me funny if I said my favorite was She Hulk.  But then, people look at me funny anyway so I guess it doesn't matter.  I know Jeff's favorite is Deadpool.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling the best. I'm like that a lot recently.

I own a couple of Lego games but I haven't played them. Lego Batman and Lego Indy. I think I got them free.

Hang in there. It can't rain every day. :)

Thanks, Peter. I'm actually feeling better now that there's some snow on the ground.

Lego Indy is my favorite of all the Lego games. Could be because Raiders is one of my favorite movies.

Just saw Raiders again last week. What a great film! I love the way you don't see Indy's face until he disarms that guy with the gun right at the beginning. And the way he meets Marion is really great. The way the scene ends with them arguing outside her bar as it burns to the ground. I think Marion is a great strong female character even if she does play second fiddle to Indy.

Ranger1

12/11/2013 at 08:07 AM

I own it. And Marian is awesome. Love how she didn't wait for Indy to come rescue her. I was just thinking it was time to watch it again myself.

A total classic. I had forgotten how good it was. Just brilliant film making.

Sorry to hear you're a bit down.  I'm sure the cold, wet, and lack of bright sunshine doesn't make it better.

Hopefully, I can pick up Lego Marvel next year.  I'm sure I'll love the game.

Cold and shorter days don't really bother me, and it's been snowing for the past two days. What I need to do is find a job...

Lego Marvel, for all its flaws, is still a ton of fun. I just get frustrated with some of the glitches and poor controls.

Sorry to hear about the funk, and I hope it passes soon.

Oh flying with Iron Man through those rings is a real pain. As for driving I found that if you don't speed but keep it at a constant speed they're fine in those ring races. I also like using the SHIELD 4X4 because it's heavy duty, fast, easier to control, and I own the actual set. Once you get into one or two rings, you get a ton of time, and you don't have to rush.

Ranger1

12/10/2013 at 05:38 PM

Thanks, Chris. I'm sure I'll feel better once I have a job for the rest of the winter.

The driving races aren't bad. I like the motorcycles, they seem to be pretty maneuverable. It's those damned RC cars and boats and flying through rings as any of the characters. Grr!

Sorry you've been feeling down.  It's a long winter still.....

Do u have plans for the holidays?  That might brighten you up.

I need to read more Steampunk.  But I DID read the Difference Engine.  Laughing

Matt, I actually like winter, especially when there's snow on the ground. It's been tough having two good friends pass away in the last couple of months along with Nov. 25th being what would have been my dad's birthday and being so close to Thanksgiving, which I spent by myself. And I'm too dmn broke for Christmas this year :(

I'm sorry to hear you been depressed Tami. I know that feeling all too well. I never played any of the LEGO games. From your description, it doesn't sound like I'm missing that much lol.

Ranger1

12/10/2013 at 05:43 PM

Aaron, even with glitches and crappy controls for driving vehicles the Lego games are still some of my favorites to play. I especially love the levels where you get rewarded for busting up the entire level. So much fun and very satisfying!

Hey Tami, this is the third I've read of my friends here that aren't feel too hot lately.  Its okay.  It happens to the best of us...everyone, trust me.  Just take your time and work through the issues.

On a lighter note...I reeaaally need to get Lego Marvel Super Heroes.

Ranger1

12/10/2013 at 05:44 PM

Thanks, Jamie. I am no stranger to depression, unfortunately, but I usually control it better than I have been lately. It will pass, I just need to be more proative in how I deal with it.

And yes, you do! Hulk Smash!

Sorry to hear your a bit down lately. I've been out of it myself which is why I haven't posted as much. Hope you feel better. By the way, how is Lego Marvel Super Heroes? I played the demo and really liked it.

Ranger1

12/10/2013 at 11:13 PM

I don't know what it is lately, but hoping you feel better soon, too.

I love Lego Marvel Superheroes, even with all its imperfections. I've got about 50 hours in, if that says anything.

I've played a few lego game demos but I dont think a whole game would hold my interest long enough to finish.  Have fun trying for 100%

Ranger1

Yeah, you're not all that into platformers. Me, I love smashing things and exploring, so it's a match made in heaven for me.

Glad you're already feeling a bit better. Hope it continues to improve!

I wanted to get Lego Marvel for me and my son to play... but I think he's too cool for it now (at 10) and he gave me a pretty lukewarm reaction to the idea. I might buy it when it gets cheap, though. I'll just have to have fun without that cool dude.

That's a great picture of your woods, although I once walked through tightly packed trees with branches like that and it was definitely not fun. Hopefully there are enough spaces there for you to fit through without walking backwards for miles hoping you don't lose an eye.

Ranger1

12/11/2013 at 08:12 AM

Thanks, Travis.

I bet if you start playing Lego Marvel, he'll wander in and pick up a controller. My nephew did that at that age, too.

There's a trail running straight down through to that tree in the middle, then it takes a jig to the left, so no worries about getting stabbed :)

"nine more Stan Lees to rescue" That just sounds funny to me.

I managed to 100% Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga and loved every minute of it. I don't remember any serious bugs in it. There was some lava jumping that drove me a little nuts in one level, but it wasn't that bad. It's funny too because I watched Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones with my sister's family at Thanksgiving and couldn't stop thinking about Lego Star Wars. They copied every last scene from those movies for the game very closely.

Ranger1

12/11/2013 at 08:16 AM

Now there are only six more Stan Lees to rescue. That statement made Jason laugh, too.

I managed to 100% Lego Indy. And I dont remember nearly as many bugs as the newer Lego games. I did have a problem with characters switching if you pressed the left stick too far in any direction for too long and the vehicle controls were even worse, but since there were so few vehiles that you're required to drive in that game, it really didn't make too much of a difference.

KnightDriver

12/11/2013 at 03:35 PM

I played a little bit of Lego Indy once and noticed the lowsy vehicle controls. I still want to go 100% that game though. I've really got to go on a Lego game binge sometime. Lego SW was so much fun.

Ranger1

12/11/2013 at 04:08 PM

Lego Indy is my favorite Lego game. I didn't get Lego Indy 2, I was told that there wasn't enough different content to bother with.

Have you seen the Longmire series on A&E yet? They're pretty good.

Yeah, watched the first season on Netflix, which i how I discovered the books. The series is good, but the books are so much better.

I'm running out of books again Tami so I'm going to ask my family for a few different novels for Christmas, I'll be really happy if I can get some new reads. Last night I bought Beyond Good & Evil HD on XBLA because Ubisoft is having a big sale on different things and BG&E is $2.50! I already have a PS2 copy but I've never played the HD version so I wanted to grab it.

Ranger1

12/12/2013 at 01:31 PM

Yay for books! Ever read any Charles de Lint? He's awesome. Might be my favorite fantasy author of all time. As for BG&E, the HD version isn't all that different from the old version, other than it looks prettier and has achievements :)

Holiday blues :( hope you can kick it soon. Why not do what I do whenever I feel the blues: Blow something up in a video game. It always fixes me right up :)

Hope some of those steampunk novels don't have any gay sex scenes. I read an Snee's blog of a newer steampunk book he got that had the samet hing. hopefully that's nota  growing trend with the genre unlike what's been happing in other forms of media.

thanks for the lego suggestion. I think I will give Indiana Jones a try this season.
