So how 'bout that Bravely Default demo? - demo review

I think I played it for 3 hours last night.

Let me get this out of the way first. This game screams "play me on a 3DS XL or go blind!"

It's easy to miss people you need to talk to and places you can go if you are playing on a regular 3DS. Not to mention that the upper screen has tons of detail and will look way better on an XL.

So, you get the semi normal 30 plays from this demo but you can save your game in town or in the field and some stuff will carry over to the full game if you buy it.

For those of you who love the Final Fantasy job system, it's here on steroids. Right off the bat you can select a main job and then a secondary "support" job. So you're Black Mage can have White magic as a support role and your White Mage can back up your Black Mage.

Being boringly predictable as I am I chose a Knight, Black and White Mages and a Valkyrie. It was a toss up between Valkyire and Ninja but I like to use Jump a lot so the Valkyrie won out.

In addition to your party you can play this game with friends and people you meet using street pass. You can use these people on restoration projects, cutting down the time you need to expand a shop and other tasks. I'm not sure if this works in the demo since I've been playing solo. Apparently you can summon friends to help you fight.

The demo starts you off as weak ass freelancers so what ever you do don't leave town without selecting jobs and suiting up. Trust me, I ran out of town right after the opening scene, ran into enemies and barely made it out of the fight. I had one team member left and he was poisoned.

So far I've accepted two fetch quests and a mini boss fight and the game hasn't kicked me out yet.

I've maxed out my current jobs and reached level 10.

Unfortunately the demo hasn't given me any sense of story so far and I'm hoping that will change in the final game. If the whole game is fetch this and kill that I'll get bored.

This is still a definite buy for me when it drops in February. If anyone wants to check out the co-op thing let me know.

I'll have to get this when it comes out, but I may have to delay that because of Lightning Returns.

I couldn't even manage to finish FF XIII in 3 tries so it won't be a problem for me. LOL

Bravely Default is currently the only game I'm looking forward to right now. That's a good things because I bought a ton of older games over the last month or so.

I see 3DS game makers may not be understanding the concept of safe area very well. But then, neither do people who produce modern television shows, and I learned that term of phrase by getting a television degree, so I guess fuck it.

All I have to say is the usual. I don't like JRPGs and I really want a 3DS. Hope you enjoy the rest of the demo and it's more than killing and fetch quests! Actually, wait, it's mostly killing and fetch quests? Are you sure this isn't a platformer? You know how I like my platformers.

There has been no platforming thus far but that is not to say that JRPGs can't have platforming. Valkyrie Profile and Xenogears has some platforming moments. Poorly executed though they were.

Discounting JRPGs there are tons of games you'd probably like for the 3DS.

Oh I know they can have platforming, as I actually very much enjoy Paper Mario and games of its ilk. I don't hate JRPGs, and I can get into them when they dumb it down enough for an outsider like me and add elements outside of turn-based combat and random encounters that I enjoy. Truth be told, I keep wondering if perhaps my tastes have changed enough that I may enjoy a good JRPG these days. I own Golden Sun, so I guess I may as well test that. I was just joking about the relatively simple nature of genres I find most appealing. Was a bit of a dig at myself as well for how much I enjoy mindless crap.

And believe you me, I know there are tons of games I'd love for 3DS. Chief among the newer ones, Luigi's Mansion 2 (Moon whatever) and Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

I hated my first experience with turn based combat and random encounters. It was a little game called Final Fantasy VII. LOL. It took me a while but I eventually got into it.

Do you have the DS Golden Sun or one of the older ones. I enjoyed the DS game quite a bit but there's definitely a few things to learn in order to use your "pokemon" properly.

I keep trying to take a break from my 3DS  but it keeps pulling me back in.

I have the GBA original, which I asked for as a Christmas gift the year it released, because I read so many positive reviews in EGM and elsewhere.

I know what you mean about the D'Jin (what I'm thinking you mean by "Pokemon"). That element of the game certainly confused me a bit. However, I stopped playing because I got caught on a puzzle; either in whatever dungeon my current save file starts me off in, or in a snow-covered town; not because of anything all that unique to JRPGs, interestingly enough. I think it's the latter location I got truly stuck in on my first play-through, becuase I want to say that snow-covered place comes after the ... Light House/Water Fall dungeon?... I was starting in the last time I booted the game up again. I think I must have deleted my original save file and started over, because of the puzzle in the snow-covered town, and only advanced to the Light House/whatever dungeon on the play-through anteceding that file deletion.

Years later, I have forgotten exactly how to solve the puzzles in the Light House(?) dungeon, where I last saved. I also forget where I am in the dungeon exactly, what I've done there already, and where I'm supposed to be going. Thus, I'll probably have to either go to GameFAQs, or restart the game again, to play this thing enjoyably.

I don't entirely mind that, though. Despite how typical it apparently is for the opening of a JRPG, I have always enjoyed the opening scenes. When I play on my Gamecube's Game Boy Player, it feels like I'm experiencing an SNES JRPG I never got the chance to before. Speaking of which, I am planning on buying a TV, so I can experience that in my apartment, instead of at other peoples' residences. lol

Interestingly enough, the whole not knowing where I am and being confused about what to do situation I find myself in when playing my current Golden Sun save file, is the exact type of situation that has kept The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks the only LoZ game in my library I've yet to finish, outside of the Master Quest edition of Ocarina of Time I have on the Gamecube disc also featuring the original OoT, which I received as a pre-order gift when I bought Wind Waker from Gamestop.

LOL, yes the D'jin are exactly what I mean. They bring some real strategy to the game.

Guess I'm going blind then, heh.

I've got to remember to download it when I can.

I'm sure there are a few of us condemned to go blind here. :)

It's around 1800 blocks so it's fairly large. Didn't take me that long to download though.

I played the demo last night for about 15 minutes. I can already tell it's going to be heavy on the level grinding.

You can level up pretty quickly in the cave.

I had a problem with my SD Card for a while that made my ambassador and eshop games disappear from my menu, and not letting me go to the eshop, which happened on the 24th last month of all days. My system memory claimed I had them but my menu said otherwise. Then the demo came out yesterday and my bro and I were trying to fix that. Turns out my SD Card had a corrupted file I couldn't delete, so I searched the web for a solution and said I had to do something on my pc to repair the data and bam, it worked.

I did download the demo but haven't touched it yet, cause I was trying to beat A Link Between Worlds yesterday. Loved that game. I have the Limited Edition Pre-ordered at Gamestops site since Amazon ran out of that edition. Sucks too because I was gonna use some giftcards on it, now I have to shell out money lol But the game looks really cool so I don't mind. Sucks we aren't getting the statue though.

I'm loving it. They were really crafty with the demo. I am now officially hooked.

Play through the demo first so you get the extra stuff in the full game. You get to keep your levels too.

Out of curiosity, how much memory does the demo take?

I hate it that you almost need to have a 3DS XL to see it.  I have a regular 3DS and don't plan on getting a bigger one anytime soon, cool as they may be.

mothman

01/04/2014 at 02:12 PM

It's mostly for running around the town. Dungeons fare a little better on the small screen.

Do you know how much memory the demo takes?

1865 blocks

OK thanks.  That's not TOO terribly huge.

For comparison, the full game of Etrian Odyssey: Untold was about 6,500. I was pretty surprised at the size of the demo!

I have been weary of getting another hand held because I don't really play my DS that much. But this might be the game that gets me to get a 3DSXL. I remember somebody doing a write up for it on 1Up and I liked what I read for sure. But a nice SLR camera is sitting a little higher on the list right now.

mothman

01/04/2014 at 02:21 PM

If you don't get into hand held it may not change your mind but my impression as I come to the end of this huge demo is that it's going to suck up a whole pile of my time.

Well I was wanting to get an XL back before the 3DS came out. For the sake of my eyes and hands I think I would play it more often if it was an XL. Was watching the trailer for Bravery Default for it today at Gamestop, looks awsome. I'll have to the see how the chips fall after I pay my taxes.Money Mouth

I played some of the demo tonight finally and nearly got the shit kicked out of me,lol. I am  however enjoying it so a preorder shall def be happening for me.

It can really hand you your ass if you aren't prepared. The further in you go the more strategy is required.

I like the environments. Character design is just so so. I may check it out.

mothman

01/04/2014 at 02:17 PM

I've been playing for 7.5 hours so far and it looks like I'm at the big boss. I think Ive found all the quests and secrets but I intend to poke around some more. The character design is similar to 4 heroes of light. I don't mind it actually. The ninja skin is really cool.

01/04/2014 at 04:15 PM

I may have to download it. I'm trying to get back in to Etrian Odyssey Untold but it's nice to see something new.

I have so much to play or get back to on the 3DS but this game seems to be cutting the queue. LOL

01/04/2014 at 10:59 AM

I haven't downloaded the demo myself. I did go and preorder the Collectors' Edition yesterday. I have the Zelda 3DS XL, so I'm good on screen size.

mothman

01/04/2014 at 02:20 PM

You can carry stuff from the demo over to the full game. Apparently there's stuff in the demo that isn't in the game so I'm making sure I've got it all. It's the biggest demo I've ever played and it has totally convinced me to preorder the collectors.

I'm off to do that now!

mothman

01/04/2014 at 08:15 PM

Update: This is the demo that never ends. I beat what I thought was the last boss and got a goodbye cutscene with the cast thanking me for playing and waving goodbye,

Then I saved the clear data and loaded it again just for a laugh. Damn if it doesn't start me up after the boss battle and there's another freaking quest!

This is how you do an RPG demo folks. I'm totally hooked,

New Demo + !?

LOL. Yep!

I'm trying to max out my shops now before the (last?) boss.

I'll have to keep an eye out for this one.

mothman

Upate: Beat the boss in New Demo + (thanks Travis for the name), maxed out all my team to the level 20 cap. and completed all the available jobs for 1 of my characters to see if it gave me anything else. (It didn't).

Also opened up all the shops in my town to at least level 1 but didn't max out the weapon shop because it was another 4 or 5 hours with 3 guys working on it. If you're not sure what I'm on about you need to play the demo to find out.

If you have a 3DS and love JRPGS you must play this demo. The Brave and Default options add a whole new level of strategy to the turn based battle system.

Travis Hawks Senior Editor

01/17/2014 at 05:58 PM

Does the town open up more or allow for more leveling once you get to New Demo +? Mine is maxed out and I've only made it through the regular stuff.

mothman

01/17/2014 at 08:40 PM

I'm not sure. My problem is I didn't look around the town until I got into ND+ so that's when I found the other areas to clear out and new shops. Each Adventurer shop appears to go to level 3.

Travis Hawks Senior Editor

01/17/2014 at 08:55 PM

Ok, that is the max then. Mine are all at lvl 3.

If I do see this game on the 3DS I might jump at it. MOre akin to get a 3DS anyway given the circumstances of my gaming habits.

I bought mine at launch and use it almost every day. Well worth the investment
