On finishing the Bravely Default Demo and 4 Heroes of Light

As I mentioned in my other blog I've gone as far as I can go with the Bravely Default demo and I wound up spending around 14 hours doing so. I could have restored some of the Adventurer stores to level 3 I guess but it would have taken many more hours of play and I couldn't find anything to keep me playing that long.

The Adventurer is the guy you talk to in order to save your game and once you have restored some of the shops in the area you can buy weapons, armour, accessories and items from him. The stuff he has to sell gets better at higher levels of restoration.

So after beating the New Demo + boss I became curious about the DS game Final Fantasy :The 4 Heroes of Light. I've had the game for a few years now but never ventured in.

Firstly do not let the cutesy character design and hand drawn environments of 4HoL fool you, this game is mean and unforgiving. You are given only the most basic outline of what is expected of you and as I quickly found out you learn what to do and what not to do by dying. Kind of like Dark Souls with cartoon characters.

Dying returns you to the village and robs you of all the gems you have acquired from killing monsters. You get to keep the levels you've gained and items you've found. You also get to keep the progress you've made in a dungeon. You just have to trek back to where you died and continue.

The reason gems are important is that A. They are used to upgrade your equipment and B. You can sell them for lots of cash. So in summary: losing gems bad!

You also have 5 action points that you use for er, actions. At the start, after dying and after staying at an inn your action points are restored to 5. During battle they deplete depending on what you do.

A simple attack takes one action point, curing or other magic (so far) takes 2. If you don't have the action points it's TS for you. In order to get back your action points you need to use Boost which is kinda like defend but you get back an AP for doing it. Sometimes after being attacked you go all glowy like your on fire and I think that restores action points too.

I can see the look of this game being polarizing. Some may find it charming while other might think it ugly. I've decided to find it charming. :D

Anyway, I may have more on this if I can manage to play some more without rage quitting.

If you're up for a challenge and like turn based RPGs that offer little in the way of hand holding you should check it out.

I'm gonna have to see if my brother has 4 Heroes of Light. I had wanted to play that awhile back, and totally forgot about it. My DS collection is freaking pathetic and consists of a whopping 0 games lol. Embarassed

You need a whole bunch of DS games Aaron. :)

This one is pretty hardcore.

I've heard about that 4 Warriors of Light or Heroes of Light game.  I have not heard good things.  I guess it's kind of a niche thing though.  The art looks cool.

I'm excited for BRavely Default.  It sounds really cool.

I'm going to see if I can make it through 4 Heroes however given that Bravely Default comes out Feb. 7 and I have the LE preordered that does not give me much time.

I played a few chapters of 4hol, but I decided that I didn't want to play anymore. I hope BDFF isn't as tedious as their other game.

Judging by what I've seen of both BDFF will be much more fun.

I've got the Bravely Default demo downloaded, but I keep forgetting to play it. My brother liked it a lot, so hopefully I will too.

I finally downloaded the demo today.  I don't know when I'll play it though.

I'm counting the days until the game launches then I think it will be consuming most of my time.

4 Heroes of Light is awesome but it's also way too hard.  I did like the music, though.

Yeah, I don't mind hard RPGs. SMT games are usually pretty hard but for the most part you don't get sucker punched right at the beginning of the game. :)

Now that I know what to expect (maybe) I' am playing it very cautious in 4 Heroes of Light.

Truth be told I've been playing with the sound off. I should plug in the 'phones.

I'd download it but I'm in the midst of a RETRO FEVER and may be down for a few weeks. You know, when those RETRO FEVERS hit, they hit hard.

I'm not curious if I would be able to handle the 4 heroes of light now. A tough final fantasy game? Sign me up!

Yep little or no hand holding, tough right out of the gate and I'm sure the fact that you cannot target enemies will hurt later in the game but since it's sold now I will never know.
