No, I haven't fallen off the face of the earth

Just took a blogging hiatus.

What have I been up to? Well, let's turn to the tried and true Random Update format, shall we?

Playing: Haven't really been playing much. I did start playing Alundra again last week. I was in a retro mood and Alundra is one of many games comprising Mt. Backlog. I've also been playing a couple of fun, cute turn-based RPGs on kongregate - Crystal Story 2 and Epic Battle Fantasy 3.

Reading: My niece got me Divergent by Veronica Roth for Christmas. It's the first book in the Divergent series. I had it read within 48 hours of having opened it at Christmas. It's another dystopian future young adult series like the Hunger Games, but I think I may actually like it better that The Hunger Games trilogy. I bought the second one last Tuesday, I had a $10 credit at my favorite local independent bookstore, it was 15% off, and I ended up paying about $6 for a new hardcover. Still plugging away at Stormrider, but I don't want to finish it too soon because the next book in the series isn't out yet.

Listening: Listened to a lot of Christmas music trying to get myself into the spirit of the season. None of it the kind of stuff that ever gets airtime or blasted over store loudspeakers. Jed Marum's Rejoice, Schooner Fare's Home for the Holidays, Castlebay's Yuletide Revelry, and a compilation disc called A Celtic Christmas that doesn't have any of that tinkle, tinkle new age crap on it, it's the real deal, much of it in Gaelic, Welsh, and Cornish. Due to the generosity of my sweet grandma, I got a $50 gift card to Amazon for Christmas and picked up two CDs that have been on my wishlist for a while. One's a newly re-issued album from the 60's by a guy named Sean O' Riada called O'Riada sa Gaiety that he did with a band called Ceoltoiri Chalann. The other is the Transatlantic Sessions 3, volume 1. The Transatlantic Sessions bring together traditional singers and musicians from the British Isles and North America and they play together for a couple weeks. This one has one of my favorite songs on it - The Blackest Crow sung by Bruce Molsky and Julie Fowlis.

Watching: I've devoured the first four seasons of Justified and I've dived back into NYPD Blue before I have to cancel my Amazon Prime membership. Also watched a couple of incredibly so-bad-they're-good movies: Red Water and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Had a Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat kick for a while - Hero, The Sorcerer and the White Snake, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Bullet-proof Monk. And a Jason Statham marathon - Redemption, Parker, and Safe. Plus the usual TV shows - NCIS, Person of Interest, Agents of SHIELD, Sleepy Hollow, The Blacklist, Arrow, Revolution, and Law & Order SVU. I think the time has come for them to retire SVU, it's getting tired. However, I think Agents of SHIELD is just getting better.

Other stuff: Been really into photography and cross-stitch lately. The photo a day challenge that I do is addictive. I haven't managed to get a whole month in without missing a few days yet, but I'm 18 for 18 this so far this month. I'll add a link to them once I get them uploaded to Flickr. I'm pretty happy with how a few of them came out. On the cross-stitch end of things, I made almost all of my Christmas presents this year. Also working on a Celtic knotwork design for my friends Fred and Julia's Great Room, and trying to finish off some projects that I started years ago and never finished.

I probably won't get to many of the blogs I've missed the last month or so. I think one of the reasons I've stayed away so long is because I felt guilty about being so behind on reading and commenting on everyone's blogs, and the longer I was gone, the further behind I got. I know, it makes no sense, but depression is like that. I'll definitely be taking part in BaD and I plan on starting on my list of topics shortly so I have something to write about and don't have to resort to too many cute kitty cat pictures.

I got my sister all the Divergent books for Christmas. She seems to really like them so I'll have to check it out. Feels weird for them to be interested in sci-fy stuff before me though between this and Hunger Games.

My nieces and nephews are great at introducing me to books and music I might not otherwise find on my own. And do check out the Divergent series. I think it's better written than The Hunger Games, which I also really liked.

I discovered Desktop Tower Defense on Kongregate. I imagine all those games you played there were free?

Ranger1

Yes, indeed, they were free.

Where have you been?

Being a broke, depressed, unemployed hermit.

Yay, Tami's back!

Good to hear from you. I've started Alundra two or three times but never gone very far. It was the first action RPG I ever played on the PS1. It's not an easy game and I always wind up quitting the first time I die

I'v emade it up to the point I stopped playing the first time, so I have high hopes. That, and gamefaqs.

Welcome back! I didn't know about Alundra until recently. Are there any Jason Statham movies you would recommend? There's a bunch of them on netflix.

Hey Aaron! All three of the ones I listed are good, but I think I liked Parker the best. Redemption is probably the better movie of the three, it just had a depressing ending.

hey nice to hear from u.  I wondered where u were, but I kept up with your photos on facebook so I knew u weren't abducted by aliens or something.

I think they're doing Alundra on Backloggers this month.  I've always wanted to play it myself, and I do own it off of PSN.

Yeah, Facebook has kept me marginally sane, believe it or not, lol. That's cool that I'm actually playing something that's being played on Backloggers.

Playing: I don't know about any of these, but if any are free on Steam, I'm open to suggestions. lol

Reading: I really liked The Hunger Games books, and I've liked the movies so far. Have you seen the trailer for Divergent? I didn't know about it until I saw that preview come on before Hunger Games.

Listening: I share your feelings on tinkle tinkle new age crap, though I do like the typical Christmas songs in their original version, and when Bad Religion covers them in a punk rock style. Your Christmas choices sound much more interesting, though.

Watching: On my end, I finished House of Cards. I'm not as into crime dramas as you are, but I would like to watch Agents of SHIELD, if my stupid antenna starts working. Hero is one of my favorite movies. It's one of the few I would call "visually poetic" with a straight face.

I've seen you do the photo challenge on Facebook ... not a BaD idea for blogs either. Hmmm .... what source are you using to get the photo challenges for each day?

Unfortunately, I'm getting out of "training" mode and my school and work will start becoming more serious in February, so I may post a few cat pics myself, but I am going to attempt to try to maybe participate in BaD.

Joe - Alundra is a PS1 game that can also be downloaded on PSN. I have no idea if Steam has it, but I doubt it. The other two can be played for free here, they're flashgames, so no need to download anything.

As for the trailer for Divergent, nope, haven't seen it yet.

Most of my Christmas music choices can be found on either CD Baby or you can listen to a sample at Amazon.

You can watch Agents of SHIELD on Hulu Plus. Help keep my friends' daughter employed - she's first unit AD for most of the episodes. I've actually owned that DVD copy of Hero for a couple of years, but just watched it for the first time recently.

You can get the FMS PAD challenge lists here. It's been a lot of fun, and I joined the Facebook group, too. Best thing about it has been the no pressure aspect, it's just for the fun of it.

Thanks, I'll keep all of that in mind. I may do a free trial of hulu Plus, so I'll be sure to keep your sister the first unit Assistant Director for as long as I can.

Hey stranger!

I think I'm going to check out the Divergent series. It sounds like something that will go great for my book goal for this year. I don't think I've watched an episode of NYPD Blue in years. I think I stopped watching once Rick Schroder joined the cast.

Good to read about the Photo A Day Challenge. I tried doing that a couple of times but I always never kept up after the first couple of weeks. They are fun, and HECK YEAH another BaD'er!

Ranger1

01/21/2014 at 03:13 PM

Hey back, Chris! Yeah, I'm really liking the series so far, and they're pretty easy reads. As for NYPD Blue, Rich Schroeder was actually pretty good, even if he didn't last more than two seasons.

And I've been BaD longer than most of the rest of you, lol. Heck, I recruited most of the rest of them!

Well we all fall off the face of the earth every now and then. I haven't been too active myself either. At least you got a lot of stuff read/watched.

Kevin, I was a slug. Lying on the couch for three days straight watching Netflix non-stop isn't healthy. As long as I keep up with the photography and blogging, it keeps me in a saner place. Next fall, I really need to have a job when I get cut loose by the park for the winter season.

Hmm... Mt. Backlog, that's clever. I think I'm gonna use that phrase from now on lol.

It's not mine, but I can't remember who I stole it from, so help yourself.

Love Celtic knotwork. Glad you been able to do so photgraphy too! Don't be shy about showing off some of your work! Funny, I didn't notice you were gone. You were at least nice enough to drop by my blog. Just returning the favor,Tam! Smile

PS: Ugh, I always get confused about blogs on account there's that list that shows who responds to them and sometimes I mix that up with the author. But I don't have an excuse on account I often comment on your photos on FB,Tami. lol. In other words, I know you are a photographer, derp!

Ranger1

01/21/2014 at 06:53 PM

You didn't notice I was gone here because we stay on touch on Facebook, lol. I'll post a pic of the finished cross-stitch project once I find the right color to finish it off. And who knows, if I get really ambitious, you may end up with your own some day. What colors do you like? I'll need two that both contrast and complement each other.

Julian from the NWP podcast here at the site would love that you had a Jason Statham marathon, on the show he's been doing a long running gag called a "Statham sighting" everytime Statham gets mentioned on any given show. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does it's super random and when Julian is editing the podcast he always adds a short audio clip from a Statham movie of him saying a tough-guy one liner. Everytime I watch a Statham flick I make sure to tell Julian on twitter that I had a Statham sighting recently.

Speaking of the devil I actually had one recently, I watched Redemption and thought it was pretty good, although it got a lot darker and more emotionally draining than I thought it would be (not that that was necessarily a bad thing). The next Statham movie I have on my Netflix cue is one he did called Blitz, I think.

Ranger1

01/21/2014 at 09:55 PM

Hmm...I'll have to check Blitz out. Redemption - that ending was so sad, I think it was worse than if Joey had gotten killed.

Glad to see you're still around, have seen you on PSN so figured you probably weren't GONE gone, but nice to see a blog. PS. ALUNDRA <3. So good, reminds me of junior high when I was obsessed with that game for. oh I dunno, probably a good year :D
