Linked to Article Series: Blog a Day (BaD) 2014

It’s the end of BaD, I just got Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, Wind Rises is out in theaters this weekend, and I’ll likely be playing Borderlands 2 all day on Sunday. It’s a good week.

That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy blogging daily, I did, but it’s nice to not feel the pressure so much. I am going to continue writing; although, I’ll be thinking along the lines of weekly unless something interesting comes up. Who knows, maybe I’ll continue to do Tuesday New Stuff and Comic’s Day every week. And oh yeah, I haven’t finished my rewrite of Games of My Life. I think there’s four more blogs there to do.

I have a friend at work now who writes too. He does fiction at http://hotplateliving.blogspot.com/. Some of his favorite authors are Henry Miller and Thomas Pynchon. We talk writing and books every day. It’s a good way to keep motivated when you can talk shop with someone. I’m beginning a focus on the nuts and bolts of writing. I’m thinking of teaching. Who knows, but I’m trying to stay focused on writing skills in my reading. I picked up The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation the other day. It’s a reference and a work book. I’ve been a little too obtuse in my reading of late, reading about everything from astronomy to neurology to cyber punk novels. This should be more useful to me.

It’s been fun following all your blogs this month. I’m still some 88 messages down, but I’ll catch up soon. That reminds me of a song by The Capitols called “Cool Jerk”. Samuel George sings, “Now give me a little bit of bass with those 88s” which refers to a type of bass speaker cabinet.

I feel like I’m opening a door to a new era: New consoles, new blogging site, new personal habits to get my career in gear. It’s all good. Now I’m heading out to the coffee shop to get me a coffee before work and watch the opening cut-scenes of Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy on my 3DS XL. Life’s good… not great yet, but good… wish I had a relationship… a good job… a new car… damn, I need a vacation… grrrr.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Professor Layton games, but I haven't played one myself yet. Maybe I'll check this one out after I finish up Bravely Default.

It's basically a collection of puzzles surrounded by a story and some point-and-click adventure stuff on fixed screens. It has the gorgeous art and excellent music as well.

That's a great song to get things started to.

It came out kinda random. Todd Rundgren does a great cover of it too on his album Wizard A True Star as part of a medley of RnB tunes.

Todd Rundgren may not have gotten along with one of my favorite musicians of all time, Dr. Gregory Graffin when he produced Bad Religion's The New America, but I like him anyway.

He's produced so many albums. I didn't even know about his production work until after I was a fan of his solo and Utopia albums.

If you like pop/rock or punk at all, The New America is considered one of BR's worst, but I think it has some of their best songs, with "You've Got a Chance," "Don't Sell Me Short," and "The Hopeless Housewife" being some of my favorite fast-paced and motivating songs from them. Then you've got a nice softer one in "Whisper in Time" which is simple, but has a nice melody, and "I Love My Computer" now reminds me of Don Jon, which is now my 5th or up favorite movie, and was a great sarcastic tune with a strong beat to begin with. A lot of the other songs are mediocre for me, but I think the CD gets more crap than it deserves.

All I've heard from them is the song "21st Century Digital Boy" on a box set called Whatever: 90's Pop and Culture Box put out by Rhino Records. It's apparently on their Stranger Than Fiction album too. I'd like to hear more sometime.

That version is the one they were forced to make by Atlantic records, who didn't think the album had a radio hit on it.

The original song sounds a bit different and is on their Against the Grain album from the 80s.

we made it!  I like Thomas Pynchon too, and Henry Miller.  very different writers.

I've enjoyed your blogs a lot and hope u continue blogging.

Thanks. I will. I read Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer recently but haven't gotten to Pynchon yet. Miller's ToC was an eye opener. I think it sets the record for most uses of the "c" word that rhymes with punt.

I enjoyed your new comics blogs if you're taking requests. Otherwise, i'm planning similar to you. I'll probably average twice a week for blogging here on out till next BaD. It's certainly a good month to practice composing a blog though, if nothing else.

Yea, I want to take more time with each blog and work on my writing.

I had fun doing the comics blog, maybe I'll keep doing it. Thanks for the input.

Todd Rundgren's cover, which is pretty cool too, comes at the end of medley he did on the album A Wizard, A True Star.

I'm hoping to see The Wind Rises this weekend.

I didn't like the first Prof. Layton game I played (too much math) but I'm looking forward to Prof. Layton vs. Phoenix Wright.  Have you ever seen the Prof. Layton cartoon movie?  It's actually reallly good and almost Miyazaki-like.

I wish. I'd love to see a Layton movie and have to solve puzzles while watching it like they did with the showing in Japan.

I still have to play the first two games and Last Specter. I came into the series with Unwound Future.

Ok I must have been the only one because I saw the title and thought you were going to post Barry Manilow's song.

I have to say I'm more familar with the Go-Go's version of Cool Jerk than the Capitols version  *ducks out of the way of flying objects.

I so wanted to. I kept thinking of how to work the song in the right way. Never got past the simple title but feast on the corny, "We've got to make it!"

It seems "Cool Jerk" is more known from its covers than the original. There are a lot of songs like that.

I'm so far behind on reading blogs Surprised With all the blogging I did for BaD and then working some overtime and being sick (and having a sick family) for a week or two, I haven't done too much more than post a blog and go to bed most nights lol. I'm hoping to go back and reach a bunch of them, like your games of your life blogs. There are just so many...

KnightDriver

I'm struggling to keep up too. It takes way longer than you think to go through 50 plus messages. BaD really created a great backlog of messages. Maybe we need a special backloggery site now just for messages. It'll get more managable in March though, I'm sure.

Good luck with the health stuff. I went through some scary, although ultimately not very serious, health issues last Fall. Made me think about life a little bit.

working on BaD's can have a suprising affect one one's life in general. One might find imspration from such, other might forgo writing for awhile and just rest up. Either way congrats on making it. I've enjoyed reading up on all that was written, but I fear in the future I just might not comment unless it's something that really jumps out at me. BaDs can be killer on the fingers.

I was still writing most days until this week, when I've begun limiting my time at the computer so I can do some exercise. Now I can't even finish going through messages to even start writing anything new.
