Random stuff 3/5/13

I've been sick for the last two days, so no blog about anything specific today. Just a bunch of random updates.

First off, I bought the Star Wars tables on both Zen Pinball 2 and Pinball FX2. I know I don't need them on both consoles,, but I have different friends on both consoles, and half the fun of pinball is beating your friends' high scores. Alice currently has the high score on my friends list on Zen, and Tristessa on FX2. I haven't got a hope of beating Tristessa, but it's fun trying. As for Alice, well, we'll see. I like the tables, I just wish it were a little more obvious what the various objectives are. Also, I have lost my ball in play more than once in Clone Wars because I'm laughing so hard at Yoda's motivational sayings. Or, as Jason calls it: Fortune Cookie Yoda. Of the three tables, I think I like The Empire Strikes Back one the best. Now I just need KnightDriver to pick them up so I have a rival I'm on equal footing with. Incidentally, Cary Woodham wrote a pretty good review of them on GamerDad.com.

I'm still plugging away at Uncharted. I like the concept of the game, I like the platforming and puzzle-solving, I loathe the fighting parts with all my being. Do we even know why these guys are all trying to kill Drake? Where the hell do they all pop up from? And why do I have to empty an entire magazine into each one of them before they die? And the really big question: does the fighting get easier in the second two games?

My Aquarium continues to hold my interest. I leave it on sometimes while I'm doing other things in my cottage. I love it because I get all the joy of having a fish tank and none of the work and heartbreak of dealing with a real tank.

I did finally find my DS. It was in a canvas bag under the table along with a bunch of my camera gear. I'll be getting back to FF III soon so I can knock that game off my backlog. I think I'm going to go back and try to finish off the DS games that I started and never finished. That will keep me busy for while. I say that, we'll see if it actually happens.

Now for the Iditarod: remember what I said about trying to figure out strategies? Martin Buser, four time champion, and his team ran about 250 miles in the first 24 hours of the race. No one's ever done that before and all the other mushers are trying to figure out just what the heck he's up to. It's been a big topic of conversation at all the checkpoints. He's just finished up his mandatory 24 hour rest break and is still running with all 16 dogs. The other issue that has cropped up is the unseasonably warm weather. Most mushers are resting during the day, as anything over 20 degrees is too warm for the dogs, especially the ones from the northern coast that are used to training in sub-zero temps.

And here ends my first PixlBit installment of random stuff.

I want to get the Star Wars tables. Really love SW and would give something to play on my Vita. I wouldn't really say Uncharted gets easier with the next two games, but it does balances puzzles and platforming better with the combat. They also let you take a stealthy approach where you take enemies out. It's easy to figure out and can give you a lot less enemies to take out later on.

Thanks for that, Casey. Better balanced and being able to be stealthy is better.

I thought it was hilarious how random dudes would pop out of everywhere in Uncharted. It's been forever since I played those games but maybe you should aim for the head? I got the second one for free because I found a $100 bill in the parking lot at work one day. I doubt that will ever happen again lol. Yell

I know, right? And I do try aiming for the head. I'm not the only one who's had this problem, jgusw mentioned it in one of his 1up blogs, too.

Maybe Buser trained for warmer weather, and feels equipped to take an extreme offense approach? I have no idea how that would work, or if that makes any sense, so I'll just stop speculating now. lol

I need to get some of these games for the DS I don't have; there is so much I want on that system I didn't know I wanted until the great Pixlbit migration. lol

What do you mean by Aquarium, but not a real tank? Artificial aquarium without real fish? What's in it?

I really wish I could find my old Gameboy Color to play Pokemon Pinball, those Star Wars games sound like a blast.

Sorry you're sick, though. Hope you feel better.

Joe, your guess about Buser's strategy is as good as anyone else's, lol. All the video clips from the checkpoints are full of the other mushers scratching their heads and speculating.

"My Aquarium" is a sim game on PSN and Wii. GH was playing it for a while and got me interested. I've been happily rearranging tanks and breeding fish for the last several months.

Ah, that makes sense.

20 degrees is too warm for those dogs?  Damn my dog would freak out and shiver to death in 20 degree weather. Tongue Out

I'm trying to catch up on some DS games too...  DQVII, Okamiden, etc.  Maybe even a Pokemon.  I dunno.

These dogs are used to sub-zero temps, and they're exerting themselves more than usual. Doesn't take much to over-heat them in warmer temps. One of the first things a lot of them do when they pull into checkpoints is roll in the snow to cool off.

I hope you get ta feeling better.

I have not played Pinball on anything other than the NES Pinball LOL. I am out of touch there.

Thanks, Larry. Do you have a 360 or PS3? Pinball FX2 is on the 360 and Zen Pinball 2 is on the PS3. They're essentially the same game with mostly the same tables. The app is free, and you just pay for the tables you want.

Homelessrook

I have both. I will have to check it out.

Ranger1

I think you'll like it. I think it plays a bit better on the 360 than the PS3, but that's just my opinion.

Sorry you're feeling sick. Hope you get to feeling better soon. I love the pinball games I play on my iPad. Takes me back to when I could walk into an arcade and see a dozen tables lined up. I'm so glad you mentioned your frustration with Uncharted combat. I recently started the first one again. It all came flooding back...the amount of bullets to take one dude out is insane!  Are these guys really Terminators? That might explain it. And they come flooding out of the brush like a swarm of locusts. The combat is very similar in the second game to me. Haven't tried out the third, although I do have it.

Ranger1

03/05/2013 at 11:00 PM

Yeah, I don't feel so bad about my frustration, as you, James and a bunch of other people have mentioned it. I like everything about the game except the fighting. Too bad there's so much of it.

You should get Pinball FX2. It's a lot of fun.

Sucks to hear you've been sick. *digital hugs* I'll give you an internet hug, it has all the meaning behind a real hug, except no spreading of the bacteria making you sick lol. Ah shit who cares, bring it in for the real thing *real-er hug*

What's your aquarium like? My crayfish has a 10 gallon tank to himself that he will always have for himself. I'd like to get a much bigger tank and get some fish at some point in the future.

I got into the Iditarod back in elementary school because of our teacher and the projects she would do. We followed the race's latest news, keep track of the statistics, we learned a little about the mushers and what they eat, about the dogs, and the environment. It was an awesome class project.

The unseasonably warm weather sounds dangerous and messy. Mostly for the health of the dogs. Does it affect the trails in any ways? Do they ever go across frozen lakes or rivers?

Ranger1

Thanks for the hug Smile.

My Aquarium is digital and lives on the hard drive of my PS3. The name of the game is "My Aquarium". It's an aquarium sim. I love it, my fish need no real care, the tank doesn't need to be cleaned, and I can swap everything out at will. BTW, your crayfish would love some fish friends - he'd have them for dinner, and they'd be the main course, lol.

I love how you share my enthusiasm for the Iditarod. Most of the mushers are resting during the warmest part of the day, and feeding the dogs cold meals. It is making snow conditions interesting for the mushers in the back of the pack. As they get to the interior, it will get colder.

Michael117

03/06/2013 at 11:09 AM

Lol I heard that Crayfish would make meals out of the fish. If I did that it certainly would make his day a little more lively and action packed!

One thing I've wondered about the Iditarod is if the dogs are susceptible to snow blindness like we are. I'm sure the mushers have goggles, clothes covering them, maybe some sunscreen or whatever else they choose to protect them from all the sunlight reflecting up off the snow. But what of the dogs? Do animals like dogs, wolves, wildcats, deer, and other animals out in the environment have to deal with snow blindness or worry about it?

Ranger1

03/08/2013 at 07:13 PM

I have no idea about snow blindness. I do know that their eyes are formed differently than ours - something to do with rods and cones and the numbers of each, but I don't know if that's a factor or not.

Uncharted:  I have uncharted 2 and I really enjoyed it. The enemies didnt seem too bad, but I have heard the the first one the enemies would spawn endless....I will play it one day, Im in no hurry..  Get Well Soon!

Ranger1

It's awful, there's no end to them!

jgusw

I had the same problems with Uncharted.  I finished it, but I didn't really enjoy the game.  I've been told by a few friends that the 2nd game is better.  I plan to play it this year.

Ranger1

03/05/2013 at 11:08 PM

I remember you saying that. It was the reason I quit playing it when I first got it. I was stuck in the same spot and I couldn't manage to kill them before they got me. My friend Michael has been coming over and acting as my spotter, so it's been a little less frustrating.

I can't wait to get those Star Wars tables in Pinball FX2. I looked into My Aquarium on PSN and want to play with that too.

Yes, hurry up! You're my favorite rival on FX2!

No fish poop? No fish corpses to scoop up? No tank scum? Hell, sign me up for that. Do the fish eat each other and get bigger, like in the game Feeding Frenzy?

Ranger1

03/06/2013 at 07:34 AM

Nope, no poop, no dead fish requiring burial by toilet, no tank scum. Some of the fish will eat the smaller ones (you even get a trophy for it, lol), but they don't seem to get much bigger.

How do you like FF III? I was enjoying it at first, but after a while I kind of got bored and just never picked it back up. I did the same thing with The 4 Heroes of Light, which I was actually enjoying even more than FF III.

You do mean the actual FF III and not VI, right? haha

Ranger1

03/06/2013 at 07:57 AM

Yep, the actual FF III. It's ok. I'm actually liking it more now that I'm further into it, but I had a really hard time getting into it. I think there are far too many job classes and it distracts from the game itself. I finally just went with what I felt were basic and balanced classes and stuck with them, until I was forced to use the dragoon class to get past one certain area. And even then, I went back to the classes that I'd been using before. I think I have a knight, a monk, a red mage and a white mage, but I can't really remember, it's been a couple of month since I last played the game.

i'm tempted to try some of the Final Fantasy games they have up for iOS. I love GTA Vice City on my iPad. Perhaps they do these games justice as well.

I can't remember if it was Snee or someone else on 1up who'd played them and liked them.

Uncharted 1 can definitely be a bit of a grind. I happened to play it after the second and I was a bit dismayed by just how much fighting there was. Also, it doesn't get any easier as the game presses onward.

The enemies at the end are an absolute nightmare and all of the headshotting techniques you've perfected over time no longer do you much good. Pretty much every enemy in the game is a bullet sponge, but I'm glad to say that they really improved that the second time around.

Uncharted 2 is a MUCH better game all around and 3 continues that trend, even if it doesn't quite measure up to 2. There's more of all the stuff that makes the series great and less shooting. Don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of shooting there (probably just a bit more than there needs to be). All around though, it's much more evenhanded.

Ranger1

03/08/2013 at 07:34 PM

Thanks, Nick. I shall continue to soldier on. I like the term "bullet sponges" by the way.

With most action adventure games I usually appreciate less enemies that have more of a unique presence. It's not so much the number of foes that is important when compared to how they're introduced and how interesting they are to fight.

Howdy Ranger! Sorry you aren't feeling well.

I remember when I lost Metroid 2 on the Game boy.. It later turned up in my backpack.

Enjoy FF III.

Thanks, Jamie. As for the DS, I knew it was in the cottage, but where was the question.
