Taito Legends - Plump Pop

Plump Pop is a 1987 arcade game that was never released in NA. This game plays a lot like Breakout. You choose from dogs, cats or pigs which hold a trampoline and bounce their child up into a field of balloons and clouds. Boss creatures appear in the sky on some levels, and dispense more balloons. By bouncing off the boss creatures you anger them until they are vanquished. The game is full of soft pastel colors and cheerful music.

The gameplay is very simple but the soft colors and the strange bosses kept me playing. I got through two of the three bosses, the Jack-O-Lantern and the Octopus, but there is a final boss of two demon putti (naked winged babies) who throw poo at you. I wish I’d gotten to that one.

There are a lot of screens. I think 40 plus some bonus screens and the boss fights. One issue is that sometimes you can’t move fast enough to respond to a quick rebound. It becomes a good strategy to send your child up higher through the lower rows so he/she can rebound off the top row of balloons and the top of the screen, staying up there longer. This is a strategy for Breakout as well.

In case you'd actually like to read a real review, here's one I read.

If you want to see the putti in the final fight that I didn’t get to, look at minute 11 of this video. Note that you can play two players to make the game a lot easier.

um, that's nuts.  That Taito collection is thick with stuff.

There's like 29 games on it. Some rare and strange stuff like this one too.

I like these kinds of games. There's a bonus game somewhat like this on Super Mario 64 DS ... well, ok, not really, but it involves a trampoline.

There should be more trampolines in games. How about a top seven trampolines in games list. So far I got one, Plump Pop. Any others?

I figured there'd be one in BMX XXX, but if there is, Google isn't aware of it. Google's not aware of a whole lot of trampolines in video games, really.

This is all I could come up with.

What the hell after the first couple of bounces the cats go into hyper spins. Music is catching as hell though.

You can pick up a crash helmet too apparently for your pu... um, I mean your kitten, and do more damage that way.

Yeah this is just a cutesy Arkanoid.  But I like Arkanoid better, strangely enough.  I know I've told you this already, but get the DS version.

Plump Pop makes me think of two other Taito games that are kind of similar to this.  The first is Pop N Pop.  It plays more like Space Invaders meets Puzzle Bobble, but a lot of classic Taito characters appear in it.  A company made a Game Boy Color version of Pop N Pop but replaced the characters with Yogi Bear and friends.  Yuck.

The other Taito game that's kind of like Plump Pop is called Puchi Carat.  It came out in the mid to late 90's and is like a cross between Breakout and Puzzle Bobble.  One of the characters in it is the same cute girl from Cleopatra Fortune.  I'm not sure if Pop N Pop is on a Taito collection, but I'm pretty sure Puchi Carat is.

Puchi Carat and Pop'n Pop are on Taito Legends 2. Yet more I will get to soon because it's next up after I finish Paper Mario Thousand Year Door.

Its a shame this game wasn't released here. This would be perfect for a tablet game

Man, so much good stuff I keep hearing about for tablets. Got to get me one sometime.

ive always loved how colorful the taito games are

I've trying to figure out how to describe it. I think pastels; color with low saturation and natural hue. Kind of like the Kirby Epic Yarn. It's usually considered a feminine thing or childlike, but I just like it. Apparently pastels are closer to the hue of natural pigments which is interesting to think about.

I guess that's why it didn't come to America.

It's definitely some kinda of wack. It should be on handhelds. It would be great there but it's not on Taito Legends Power-Up for PSP.
