Yesterday – Forgot to mention I saw Godzilla in IMAX 3D. That enormous IMAX screen really does envelop you in the movie. I found myself looking around within the screen like I was at a real place. The movie was fine. I was hoping for more of a wacky Pacific Rim style, but it was pretty true to the formula of those old Japanese monster movies. I enjoyed it.

The Early Morning Hours – Had a dream about working in a company that had just spent its first earnings of $10,000 on a huge load of video games, I guess, to start some kind of retro store. I thought it was a bad idea but looked through the enormous pile of games anyway and saw lots of Mega Man games on PS1. Then I looked through all the N64 games and didn’t notice any valuable ones. I thought, “This company has bought a bunch of common games, how are we going to make money off this stuff?” Weird right?

11:45 am – Continued playing Taito Legends 2 on PS2 at my friend’s place. Three games were vertically scrolling shooters where I couldn’t make the screen show them in the original format. So they were all stretched out in 16:9 and became unpleasant to play with such a smooshed play field. It made it hard to avoid anything. The three games were: Gekirindan, Grid Seeker and Gun Frontier.

                            growl

"Welcome my feathered friend. Peck their eyes out!"

Then I played Growl which is another brawler where you save the animals from poachers. When you release an animal, it then fights for you, which is really neat. Thing is, I was getting mobbed by enemies and soon got really frustrated. Last time I played it, I must’ve put it on easy mode or something, because I don’t remember it being like this. I beat it last time I played.

Hat Trick Hero is a soccer game and it plays fine. Soccer’s not too interesting to me so onward I went.

Insector X is a side scrolling 2D shooter with a buggy theme. Lovely art style. Reminds me of TwinBee which is similar but a vertically scrolling shooter. I wasn’t in the mood to be blasted from all sides with bugs, so I moved on.

                                      kkk

Kiki KaiKai is like Front Line where you move vertically and shoot at enemies on the ground. You are a Shinto Shrine Maiden who has to tame spirits gone amok. I hated the fact that the move and shooting controls were on the same stick or d-pad. I kept thinking this would be much better as a twin-stick shooter where you move with one stick and shoot with the other.

                               kk

                                                 "Kamehameha! Oops."

Kuri Kinton is a side scrolling 2D fighter where you are a character that reminds me of other anime kids dressed for a martial arts match like Naruto or Goku from DBZ. You even have a ranged attack that looks like a Street Fighter hadoken or Goku’s kamayamaya. It was an ok fighting game. I didn’t stick with it too long.

I saw Godzilla this weekend, too!  I enjoyed it.  I used to watch Godzilla movies when i was a kid, so I felt like a little kid during this movie.

Insector X is a cute shooter but I found it very hard.

KiKi KaiKai had a couple of sequels on the SNES and GBA.  You might know them as Pocky and Rocky.

I seem to remember that Kuri Kinton game being kind of fun.  Better than Legend of Kage anyway.

Legend of Kage was just weird. The character seemed to jump all by himself.

I dug Godzilla. Yeah, it's a slow burn, but damn that payoff is sweet.

What I used to love about the old Japanese monster movies was the models and sets they used for the humans in the suits. I used to build models as a kid and it's really amazing what they did before CG. Now it's less impressive because I know they did it all in a computer.

I appreciate what old artists did, but I'm no less impressed by what artists are able to do with computers today because of it.

The monster battles were pretty awesome in this new Godzilla. I think they made an attempt to give it some of the look of the old film. The way the buildings crumbled made me think of it.

This is only the first hour of a whole day I had to break into four parts. There's 38 games on TL2. I ripped through them all by 5:00.

I'm hopping to go and see Godzilla. I've been excited ever since I saw the initial trailer.

It's good and even better on the biggest screen out there, IMAX. The movie is darn loud too.

I want to go see Godzilla but I heard there are not enough scenes with monsters fighting but a bunch of dialogue.

It does take a while to get to it, but then it's a battle royale. But I agree with the critics somewhat. More monsters please, less people talking. That's what Pacific Rim was all about, nothing but giant robots and monsters weeehoo!

Godzilla! Haven't seen it yet. I'm saving it for a mid week early show when nobody is around. Hopefully I'll do that before local kids are done with school so there isn't any teens yelling and what not.

A friend of mine was telling me how people were shouting things at the screen when he saw it. I didn't have that problem but when Godzilla showed up full length for the first time, I wanted to get up and shout, "Godzilla! Godzilla!". Luckily I didn't do it, but if no one was there. Oh yea, I would have.

Ah,the classics! I played Growl a few times in the arcades. I'm a bit unfamiliar with everything else, sadly!

Very few of these Taito games made it to the arcades I used to go to. There was Front Line, Space Invaders, and Jungle Hunt. That's about it. Same with Konami games. When I saw those on Xbox Live's Game Room, they were all totally new to me.

Really want to see Godzilla, just haven't found the time yet.

It's pretty good. I saw it in IMAX 3D. The 3D didn't do much, but that big screen is definitely cool.

I remember watching a review of Growl back on Screwattack.com when they still had decent content. Interesting game and I didn't know it was offered with the Taito collection.

I used to get Screwattack's podcast, but somehow I lost interest after a while. They had Angry Video Game Nerd on the podcast occasionally.
