Holy Wing Diver. You've Been Down Too Long in the Sea of Ants. Oh When Will You Be Rescued.

It's a day of disaster. A day of giant foes not of this world. Citizens run screaming from the streets of the cities. The call goes out to the forces ready to defend. Get your armor on, pick up a rocket launcher, and let's get out there and save Earth.

See that Ranger guy on the far left of the upper part of the box art? See that weapon he's carrying? That's called the Air Tortoise and that's what my friend Mark was using as we played EDF 2025 all day yesterday. I was the Wing Diver female just to the right of the black Fencer character in the middle except I was a shade of yellow (you can change your color). I started out as the Ranger too at first, but when I saw you could fly around as the WIng Diver, I went for that. The jet pack is really helpful. She doesn't get the big weapons like the Air Tortoise, but she is very maneuverable. I use her jet pack to hunt down weapon drops and occasionally - I mean, often - rescue my friend from getting knocked out.

But I was knocked out quite a bit myself, and often I had to wait for my friend to decide to rescue me. So while I lay there, I messed with the camera and tried some fashion shots. I mean, why not, right?

I call this the Helplessly Hoping look.

The Wing Diver is a great character because you can soar high above and see the waves of insects crawling over the buildings and landscape. I could also see my friend shoot the Air Tortoise missile, and watch it slowly approach a giant robot, explode on it with a huge firey blast, and see the robot, smoking but still functional, walk out of the flame and shoot off a huge plume of plasma. I mean, this game has the monster movie look down: buildings crumble to the ground, waves of giant ants swarm uncontrollably, huge robots bigger than skyscrapers march down the streets, gargantuan flying saucers fly overhead, and you, small you, run around blasting away until they are all just piles of rubble. Ok, that part isn't monster movie material. Usually another monster fights the troublesome one and the tanks and people get squashed, but hey, whatever.

How much fun can you have from this game? A lot. I hardly moved all day as we played mission after mission, picking up new weapons and trying them out, destroying whole buildings, - I mean, my friend destroying whole buildings while I was on the roof sniping. KInda hard to snipe when the floor drops out from under you and you drop ten to twenty stories to the ground. Luckily the Wing Diver doesn't take damage from falls - blasting UFOs from the sky, running like mad from a swarm of red ants but finally getting scooped up by one and shaken like a rag doll, and flying around looking for health so I can make a rescue (you rescue by giving some of your health to the downed person. If you're below 20%, you've got nothing to give, and you can't revive a player).

Story? Huh? Music? I think I heard some Bernard Hermann like stuff once. None of that really matters, just big monsters and big guns and a whole lot of shooting. Yeeehaaa!

never played one of these.  sounds like fun co-op.

It's super fun. There's friendly fire though so get out of the way when the Ranger launches the Air Tortoise; although, that missile is big, but flies really slowly. I actually flew alongside the missile and dodged it pretty easily with the Wing Diver.

When I reviewed EDF 2025, I always played as the Wing Diver, too.

Those maps are big, so it's really helpful to be able to fly. There's supposed to be a way to call in an aircraft or tank, but I haven't figured out how yet.

Now I want a highlight video of the Wing Diver doing her thing while this song plays.

Those music videos are just goofy fun, but I alway prefer live shows like this one from '83.

That's sexist =P

yet another game I've not latched onto. It sounds like my kind of game. Big guns with big enemies with big explosions. I just need to know where to start and which games in the series to avoid.

You should've seen the other ones I took. I'm a pig. I know.

Well, the first one EDF 2017 was great, but it didn't have online co-op, just local split-screen (there is a Vita version now. Not sure if it has online though). The second one, EDF Insect Armageddon does have online co-op but it was done by a different dev and I haven't played it yet (Metacritic gives all the EDF games the same score of 68 or 9, so I guess it should be as good as EDF 2017). This third game (fourth if you're going by the Japanese releases) EDF 2025 seems to me to be the best of the series and it's now $20 new. Bigger enemies, better graphics, everything destructs, super fast online play, loads and loads of missions. I think it's the best of the series so far.

If you're thinking about story and playing things in order, don't bother, because there are no distinct characters to follow, and the story is pretty much the same for each. The aliens come, drop bugs and robots, and you have to stop them. End of story.

Wing Diver? Badass.

She's an awesome class to play. I was flying around with a sniper rifle shooting as fast as I could. So many ants and spiders!

I noticed in 2025 that the soldiers around you start singing fighting songs in addition to yelling "EDF! EDF! EDF!" I got a kick out of that.

That was a great touch.

I need to try this series again. I bought one awhile back because of your blogs about them, but I just didn't get into it.

This one is the best by far. I was laughing so hard as I was running from a hoard of red ants when my weapons were recharging. It was rediculous how many of them there were. F'n fired up the jetpack at the last second and got out there. Started singing, "HOLY WING DIVER. YOU WERE DOWN BUT NOW YOUR NOT IN THE SEA OF ANTS. THANK HEAVEN FOR MY JETPACK YEAH."

Nice Dio reference.

Couldn't help myself. I also felt like a Valkyrie swooping down to rescue fallen soldiers. I could've put Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries in the blog instead.
