Just for fun I went through the database at allgame.com and wrote down how many of each genre of video game I've played all-time. This is the result.

Action 136
Shooter 133
Role-Playing 98
Strategy 39
Compilation 36
Traditional 20
Puzzle 19
Racing 16
Simulation 13
Sports 11
Adventure 10
Fighting 1
Home 1
Educational 0

533 total

I was surprised to see how many fell into the Action genre beating out Shooter, which I thought would be number one for sure. Really though they are tied because they are so close. The rest is pretty much what I expected.

Wait, you've only played one fighting game in your life? And what is the Home genre and what game is that? What is the traditional genre? And you've never even played Oregon Trail for educational?

Most of the "Fighting" games I've played are actually categorized as "Action" like Final Fight and God Hand, and the few boxing games I've played are in the "Sports" category.

"Home" includes a game like Mario Paint. I have U-Draw for 360, but haven't "played" it yet.

"Traditional" is like board games translated to computer like Monopoly or Chess and such.

I wanted to play Oregon Trail on a smart phone, but I don't own one yet.

I get all this genre info from allgame.com.

Makes sense. Still, you've never played Street Fighter II? I'm impressed.

lol When I was a kid I accidentaly rented a Mario game that was educational, didn't realize till I got home to play it. It made you do math problems! I was so pissed.Yell

I used to think there was big possibilities in "Edutainment", but really it just makes games boring. Screw you American Mensa Academy game!!!

Um. . . Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego wasn't bad though.

Yeah, I admit I did like Carmen Sandiego. I had a soft spot for geography when I was a kid, still kind of do. But putting math in a game is just criminal. lol Yet the idea of using games as a teaching tool is totally legit. Its just most of those games were being designed by teachers not game designers. There has to be a balence of fun and learning for it to work.

Educational games are still a thing on consoles? i wonder if Carmen Sandiego would count if it was ever on modern consoles.

Yea, Carmen Sandiego is labeled "Education" by allgame.com. That Wonderbook game on PS3 (remember that thing that used a Move wand? Supposed to be such a big deal E3 2013?) and Rocksmith are also considered "Education".

This is interesting, and I'd bet my gaming habits are 80% sports, 20% everything else. Actually I think my Android gaming keeps count like this. Oh Google you do so much.

I had to do it the old fashioned way - look at a huge database and start counting.
