Nostalgic Vacation: Plan

My plan in 2014 was to keep up with the latest releases, buy one new game a month, and play that game as thoroughly as possible. Well, I've finally got overwelmed by the number of games out now that I haven't played. Not only that, my best friend and gaming buddy is out of work, probably for good, and can't keep up with me anymore. This kind of kills my interest in keeping up with the Joneses, so I'm going on a vacation and taking a long nostalgic trip through the years of gaming history - and my collection.

I'm going to choose one game at a time, starting at the beginning (which to me is 1977, the year the Atari 2600 was released), play it, and then write up my experience. All together that will amount to 37 games, 38 when 2015 happens (I can't believe that in 2017 it will be 40 years of gaming. Scheesh!). Most of these games will cost me little or nothing to acquire since my collection is pretty large already.

The first decade or so will go by really quickly as the games are short, but then the games of the 90's will take longer, and the 2000's longer still. I don't care how long it takes, but I'd like to cruise through history and play some games I love and some I've longed to play. It's going to be fun, and I get to write about all of it - funner still. . . that's fun and funner!

That sounds awesome. I can't wait for you to get to the late 80s. I started in the early 90s, but thanks to having an older brother, late 80s is when I'll start recognizing the games you review as nostalgic for me.

I'm curious to see what you've played of those 533 games. lol

That sounds epic as hell! Good luck!

That's an excellent idea!  Not only will you have that vast gaming education and experience under your belt, you'd have taken a thorough tour of your collection and gotten your money's worth.  I'm all about getting my money's worth!

I'm sorry about your buddy being out of work.  That's a tough pill to swallow, believe you me.  Keep him distracted!

I used it as an excuse to pick up a PS3 slim and new Xbox 360 so I could hand down my stuff to him.

I'm having fun looking at each year and seeing what came out.

hey that sounds like a good idea!  I love the Atari too.  What games are you going to do first?

I just played Night Driver for year 1978. I'm not sure what will be next for Atari though because I'm working on 1979 and Lunar Rescue, an arcade game by Taito. I don't want to look ahead too much and spoil it for myself.

yay Night Driver!  I once wrote a song about that game.

Really, that's super cool. For some reason I'm thinking of Kraftwerk and the song Autobahn now.

I can't really describe it. I had a bass at the time though and it was very bass line driven.

In relistening to Autobahn, I favor more bass.

nice to finish off with the unofficial end of summer with some retro goodness. It's offifical though, you are definiately retro gamer.

I was "new gamer" for most of 2014, but I'm back to my retronaut voyages.

This is an awesome idea! Perhaps one day I'll try such a thing. Maybe when I get closer to 40 years of gaming Wink

As usual, this task looks more daunting the more I look at it, but I'm going to stick to it, unlike my behavior in Silent Hill recently. Sorry again. I want to get back to it now.

It's a lot of time to cover, so this is definitely a project for the long haul. Silent Hill should be much briefer, thankfully.

I bet you probably started your gaming quest through history (I'm really behind on blogs), but I'm digging the idea. There are so many quality games that got left behind, plus it save a couple of bucks on jumping on the latest and greatest.

Good luck to you sir, and hopefully I find one of these hidden gems through your blogs!

That's one of the reasons I'm doing it - save money; although, I almost bought a Retron 3 the other day. I may still do that because I don't have a Genesis or SNES anymore. I think though that I might have most of those games on collections or be able to get them through virtual console. So I may not have to spring for one.

I'm hoping to find some gems too. I'm going to play some games I've never played before as well as the favorites. It'll depend on what strikes me when I do the research on a particular year.

Those Retron consoles are so freaking cool, but I can't get myself to buy one. I think my window passed on buying it from an actual store when the one guy selling it at the mall closed down his kiosk.

I've got Jay Street Video Games beginning to really thrive and grow in my area at the moment. I've got two in my area and they are opening more stores all the time. Their stock started at almost nothing and now is crammed full of awesomeness. I guess retro is starting to get big again.

I only need one game I'm crazy for on SNES or Genesis that I can't get anywhere else to pick up a Retron. I have my NES still because of Wizardry. It's the only place I can play it.
