PC is broken... But 3DS is awesome!

So my computer won't start. At all. I tried all of the cords to see if it was a faultu cable. I opened it up and made sure everything was connected properly. Only thing I can think of is that there's a problem with the power supply.I took it in to get it repaired, but I'm worried about how much it will cost.

Ah well. Bilby has come down for a visit and I've been playing her 3DS at the moment. I'm seriously enjoying it, especially Fire Emblem. Holy fuck, where has this game been all my life? It's amazing! I'm loviing the combat and especially enjoying pairing people up. It's awesome.

I've also been playing Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, which is also pretty darn fun. I look forward to playing more of that.

The other game I've been playing is Super Mario 3D Land, which is... alright, I guess? I mean it's a good game, but I don't get why everyone loves Mario so much. They're good platformers but I've played much better. Like... Rayman Legends. Or... Super Meat Boy. I even think Jak and Daxter and Banjo Kazooie were better at being 3D Mario games than the 3D Mario games.

Don't get me wrong, I am still enjoying it. I just don't quite get what all of the fuss is about, and how these games consistently get 9's and 10's from IGN.

Keep in mind that Blake has never played a Super Mario Galaxy game.

I could care less about Super Mario 64, but loved Super Mario Sunshine. I haven't played any other 3D Marios really.

Bummer about the PC. I'm still pissed that Bane keeps breaking my game. Asshole.

I'd love a 3DS and PS4 as I have said so many times ... if only money grew on elephants.

Damn! Forgot to reply t this comment for some reason! Sorry man! I actually really didn't like Sunshine all that much, but oh well, each to their own.

Is that with Origins? Yeah, that game crashes my system too.

Welcome to the Nintendo Club! Aside from Mario games, the 3DS has a solid library of games you can't really get anywhere else, Fire Emblem being one of them, although you could substitue with XCOM.
Sorry about your PC. I went through a similar type of thing last summer and I ended up having to replace the CPU fan or something. I'll be interested in reading impressions about your adventures in Nintendoland, with explitives  of course.

Haha, well that depends whether I write a Plus10Damage article, or a pixlbit blog.

Any 3Ds recommendations? Bilby has Pokemon, and the other 3 I said.

I could be here forever with 3DS games.
If you like Fire Emblem, there is Ghost Recon Shadow Wars. It's a bit like XCOM and should be cheap.

Zelda Ocarina of Time
Etrian Odyssey IV-- Dungeon Crawler- very tough
Resident Evil Revelations -- its in 3d!
Mario Kart 7

What are you favorite type of games?

Blake Turner Staff Writer

My favourite types of games are RPG/exploration games, platformers, and turn based strategy games. I've heard great things about the Monster Hunter series but I've played them.

I played Monster Hunter on PSP in the past and own the WiiU Monster Hunter. Monster Hunter 4 is coming out on 3DS next I think. I think there is a Wii version too, which is similar to the WiiU version, but slightly enhanced. I'd get a regular controller though.

I say "yes" to Shadow Wars. Love that game. Some guys who did the original Xcom did that one.

Mario 3d Land is kind of okay.  The worlds are way too small.  3D World for the Wii U is much better, and Super MArio Galaxy is amazing.

hope you can fix your PC...

Are there better Mario games for the 3DS? Also, I'm really confused by Nintendo's pricing at this point, since Wii-U games are cheaper than Wii games in Australia.

there's a 2D mario game for the 3DS but I haven't played it.  apparently it's pretty good.  There's also Paper Mario, but that isn't very good.

Maybe there is a shortage of used games on the market in australia.  Maybe Wii U games are more plentiful because they're in print.

Yeah, I was talking to a friend who works at one of the stores and he said that most people don't trade Wii games in. They never go down in price so people can't just trade in an old game and get it cheap again later if they decide they want to play it again.

He also said that Wii-U games are cheaper because Nintendo are selling barely any systems.

The best Mario game you can get on the 3DS is Super Mario Bros 3.

The SNES and earlier Mario games are superior to your Rayman Legumes and Banjo Kazooie.  I will say that Rayman is way better than the NEW Super Mario Bros series and Banjo Kazooie is way better than Super Mario 64.

Super Mario 3D Land is very much meh because it took the NEW Super Mario Bros design and made it 3D.  I want my 3D Marios to be collectathons like Super Mario 64, Jak and Daxter and Banjo Kazooie.

Fire Emblem is awesome and I was surprised that I actually finished it because I typically tire of that genre quickly...

I agree. I love the SNES mario games. I think you're right though. I was sort of hoping for a Banjo Kazooie/Mario 64 style collectathon when I bought it.

And yeah. I was seriously addicted to Fire Emblem... Like, I'd play for 4 or 5 hour stretches.

I would reccomend Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon played with headphones.

From the eShop I would reccomend Mighty Switch Force since Mutant Mudds and Steamworld Dig are already available on PC.

I was tempted to buy that, but didn't know enough about it for a purchase.

Yeah, I agree.  Mario games are great, but it's not my favorite Nintendo property.  I like Zelda, Metroid, and Kirby games way better than Mario.  There are also a lot of 2-D platformers that I like better than Mario ones, too.  Such as Klonoa, Ratchet and Clank, and others.  I get a lot of weird looks and comments when I say that I like Kirby games better than Mario games.  Have you ever played a Kirby game?

Blake Turner Staff Writer

09/04/2014 at 10:42 PM

Yeah. Are there any Metroid games for 3DS? I haven't heard anything about one... I'd totally pick that up.

Cary Woodham

No there is not a Metroid game on the 3DS, but I wish there was one.

While I do think Rayman and Meat Boy are better than New Super Mario Bros (which I still very much like), you can't simply get any better than Super Mario 64, 3 and Galaxy. I think those ones are masterpieces of plataforming IMO, and indeed, you will understand why Super Mario Galaxy (both games), got tens across the boards once you play it (they are my favorite games after all).

I do agree that 3D Land, while good, isn't as great as the past 3D Mario games though.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

09/04/2014 at 10:48 PM

Yeah. I don't know, maybe I've just missed a lot of the truly great Mario games. I've played 3 and World, and loved them. The only other one I played was Sunshine, but I wasn't a fan really.

I never got sucked into 3D Land the way I did with Mario 64. As far as other 3DS games go I second Joaquim's suggestion for Luigi's Mansion it's way more fun than 3D Land. Donkey Kong Country Returns is another one you should play.

Also for RPGs - Shin Megami Tensei IV is good but the maps suck and it's easy to get lost. Devil Survivor Overclocked is another SMT universe game with a hybrid strategy turn based battle system. Bravely Default is worth a playthrough even with the repetitive second half.(The endgame is worth it)

Remember that the 3DS also plays DS games so there's a ton of great RPGs and other stuff there. Radiant Historia is highly recommended

Anyway it sucks about your PC. If it's not coming on at all the power supply is a good guess.  I'm taking my PS3 to be fixed this week. Another $100 I don't have. :(

Oh and you do need to play the Galaxy games.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

09/04/2014 at 10:53 PM

Hmm, I do really want to playe the SMT games for 3DS. Unfortunately I can't find them. What are they like? Are they similar to Persona at all?

mothman

09/05/2014 at 08:12 AM

Nope, Both of the games I mention are nothing like Persona or each other for that matter.

There's still demon fusion and a similar demon compendium. SMT IV has 3rd person dungeon crawling with first person turn based battles.

In Devil Survivor the story plays out through talking heads on static backgrounds and has a strategy style combat system played out on a grid with first person turn based battles.  Each of your team members is supported by 2 demons chosen from the stable of demons you have created.

SMT IV is the only one that is actually an SMT game. Persona, Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga and Devil Survivor only have the SMT tacked on outside of Japan.

Prior to SMT IV the last true SMT game was Nocturne.

Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 3D Mario I'd put above all those ones. They're really fantastic games. Outside there, I'd put a couple above Banjo Kazooie, but do agree Jak and Rayman Legends are much better platformers.

Fair enough. I'd be interested to see you rank the Mario games. Have you done that already?

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

Shovel Knight.

Those two should keep you busy for a bit.

I've got Shovel Knight for PC. It's pretty awesome. I might have to look into Luigi's Mansion though.

I'm always playing my 3DS at work.  I finished Fire Emblem and Zelda.  I'm currently playing Devil Survivor: Overclocked.

I haven't been a fan of Mario in many years.  They're hyped too much.  I played SMG1 and I wasn't impressed.  I mainly had issues with having to use the wiimote to play the game than the game itself though.  The wiimote annoys me.  If I can play a game with a GC controller, I do it.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

09/04/2014 at 10:59 PM

Yeah... the Wiimote doesn't seem great, and it's the main reason I avoided the console really.

What's Devil Survivor like? Also, what do you do for work? I want your job if you can play the 3DS all the time haha.

jgusw

09/05/2014 at 08:17 AM

I work at a wastewater (shit) plant.  Dirty water goes in and clean water goes out.  2 people have to be there at all times.  At night, weekends, and holidays, there are usually only 2 people.  12 hr shifts.  If the plant is running good (most of the time it is), I'm only working 3 hrs out of the 12.  Plenty of time to watch movies, read, and play games.  One of my co-workers has one of those portable monitors that you can put a console in and he plays that.  I brought my pc to work more than a few times, but I usually take the 3DS or PSP with me.  Most guys bring a laptop.  Not a bad job.  As long as water needs cleaning, I have a job.

Devil Survivor is probably my favorite DS game.  It's a srpg.  It re-released again on the 3DS with extra content.  It's a SMT game, so a lot of fighting demons with demons.  I think it's as good as FE:A, but not as complicated.

That sounds pretty decent! What's the pay like?

And fair enough! I'll definitely have to give it a go!

jgusw

09/05/2014 at 10:17 PM

Pay varies, but it's pretty good.  It's an important job.  You have to continue taking courses to keep your license.  We're fighting polution and keeping water safe for everyone. Laughing  I've been told if a plant is near a beach and/or a resort, the water has to be very clear and clean and the pay to keep it up is better.  Also, you don't have to go to college to get the job.  I figure I'll work for the city for a few years and then work for the state or government.  There are agencies that monitor our work and make sure we follow guidelines and laws.  I can only assume their pay is better.  Hopefully, my college degree will finally come in handy.

So many cool games for 3DS I haven't got to yet. Fire Emblem is probably number one on that list.

Fire Emblem Awakening is my favorite 3DS game of all time (Considering that I don't have much of a 3DS library). Sure I still consider myself a Pokemon Player but Fire Emblem is one of the best games I ever played.
