Finished Sleeping Dogs

Finished it last night sooner than I meant to. I accidentally started the last story mission before I was ready to, and didn't have a back up save from before the start of the mission. Oops.

I can't remember offhand how many hours I spent on this game, but it was a pretty sizable chunk, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I can go back and replay missions and races and finish up open world stuff, but I think it may be time to move on. I really enjoyed the story, and it may be the only open world game that has really pulled me in and not made me feel overwhelmed. None of the races were impossible (as long as you figured out which vehicle work best, but not too bad, as I was trying to collect all the vehicles anyway), and it wasn't always the fastest car you wanted, but the one that handled best. There's one race that goes done this really twisty mountain road, and the fastest car really wasn't my friend there. I had fun hijacking armored cars (the better part of my bank account was ill-gotten gains from this), running over parking meters, and blowing red lights. I initially was getting my ass kicked doing the Drug Bust missions by thugs with guns, because I didn't always have a weapon and there wasn't always one available in whichever location I happened to be in, but once you earn enough cop upgrades, weapons can be found in the trunks of cop cars. I started stealing or hijacking cop cars, eluding any pursuit, and then driving to the drug bust I needed to clear out, grabbing the shotgun from the trunk, and easy-peasy! Dead thugs!

I eventually found all the collectibles. And that brings me to another thing about the game that I really liked. If you did the dating side missions, you'd get rewarded with more and more of the collectibles showing up on your map. I knew they showed up on the mini map, but what I didn't realize until almost the end of the game and I was looking for the last seven or so lockboxes, is that they show up on the big map, too, if you toggle the collectibles button. I thought it was just the ones you'd already found, until I hovered over a couple and realized that they were all on there and that some of them were grey instead of white. Facepalm time, and then a quick mop up of the remaining lockboxes for a couple of easy achievements.

Much as I enjoyed the rest of the game, the gambling mini games and the karaoke mini game weren't all that much fun. I did get the achievement for getting above 90% on all the karaoke songs, but luckily there really weren't all that many and the game seemed to be fairly forgiving. It just felt tacked on. The gambling mini games weren't explained very well. Luckily, one of them was just poker played with mah jong tiles and not that difficult to figure out, but the cockfighting one was terrible. I'm still not sure if I was actually controlling the rooster or if it was all random. I got lucky and managed to get both cockfighting achievements before I lost too much money.

There were some annoying bugs and glitches, too, one of which froze my 360, thus causing me to lose a lot of progress. A couple of others, I got stuck under a stairwell, trapped in a parking garage, and one of my cars got stuck half in, half out of a parking garage. The car getting stuck was only mildly annoying, the others caused me to have to exit the game and go back in, again, resulting in loss of progress.

All in all, I got a lot of enjoyment out of a free game that I didn't expect to like. I think I'd like to see a sequel some day.

I'm hoping to grab the Definitive Edition on Steam either on the holiday sales or another along the lines.

I was lucky and got it for free with Games With Gold on Live. I'll eventually get the DLC, I'm really not ready for the game to end.

Will the sequel be called "Dogs What Have Woken Up".

I'm not sure I would like this game. I know I got it as part of PSN+ but I didn't even bother to put it in the queue and it's not available anymore.

It's more of a brawler than a shooter, and you play as an undercover cop. The story is really good. I'm not a fan of the GTA franchise for the simple reason that I don't really enjoy playing as a criminal. There's actually a part in Sleeping Dogs where Wei Shen is doing jobs for someone and he tells the guy he's done because he has moral issues with what he's being asked to do.

Hmmmm, maybe I should have queued it then.

Is this game on Steam? I have the sudden urge to fill my badges/achievements section on there with cockfighting trophies.

I believe it is, Joe.

Yes it is. Best of all, it's the 8th gen version, with all the DLC and some apparent improvements.

Hmmm ... 8th gen version. Good for the game, not sure about my laptop's handling of the game. I really need a console ... NEED.

Joe, from what I've been reading, you don't really need the souped up version for PC, the 7th gen version supposedly looks really good to start with.

Sweet! I'll see if there's any Steam/Cyber Monday sales.

Joe, the 7th gen version in not avaiable anymore. For the 7th gen you can only buy the DLC if you bought the game before the Definitive Edition was released, but now you can only buy the 8th gen Sleeping Dogs for the full release. Just look up on the store.

I should probably get around to playing this free game too. Just haven't been in the mood to kill much these past few days. Perhaps this game can fix that.

Like I was telling Peter, it's more brawler than shooter. It's a lot like a Hong Kong action movie.

You can collect cars?! Oh yes, I'm in! I have Sleeping Dogs from Xbox Live Gold too. I loved collecting all the cars in Crackdown and then racing them all over town.

Ranger1

11/19/2014 at 02:44 PM

Not only can you collect them, but there's an achievement for getting all of them! Plus, you can access them from any parking garage in the city.

An achievement?! Garages everywhere?! Me likey!

And then there's the car valet when you gain enough Face levels - call him on your cell, and he'll bring you a vehicle. Seems to just be the motorcycle you start out with, but it's better than walking.

A valet too? Neat!

Sleeping Dogs is fantastic. We need more games set outside of the US, and we need more kung fu action games!

Ranger1

Blake - yes on both counts!

If it wasn't for Dragon Age 3, I'd be playing Sleeping Dogs right now.  I'll get to it after DA3.

I really need to play the Dragon Age games at some point. I really need to play Mass Effect at some point, too, lol.

Seems like a fun enough game. I'll be sure to add it to my mental list of games to try out sometime.

It seems to have something for everyone. Racing, stealth, action, a good story, rhythm games, brawling, shooting, exploration, customizable clothing, a decent leveling system. Is it the best game on the market? No, but it's a lot of fun.

I like this game.  I'm thinking of getting the HD version for my brother for xmas.  Glad you liked it.  Back to south park?

I think so. But who knows. Might go off in a completely different direction. I do have gamer ADD, after all.

After reading this, I really should get back into this game and try to finish it. Congrats on finishing the game!

I'm partial to story-driven games, and I think that was the big reason why I liked it so well. Wei Shen being deep undercover has to walk a fine line and really has his loyalties tested in the story. The other stuff was gravy. You can play through pretty quickly if you're only interested in playing the story missions, but the other stuff was (mostly) a lot of fun, too. I'm hoping someone gives me a Live giftcard for Christmas, because I'd really like to pick up a lot of the DLC.

I'll keep an eye out for this during black friday sales. It's interested me since its release but I've never taken the plunge.

Ranger1

It's a couple years old now, so you can probably find it used or in the cheap bin somewhere. Unless you have to have the Xbox One/PS4 version.

I *think* I have to have the new shiny one Smile
