What A Disappointing Year

Tis the time for lists and other such folly. Tis the time to look back at the year and think of all of the wonderful experiences we had in a virtual realm and try and justify all the time we spent that could have been dedicated to something even mildly important.

However, this was not one of those years. Can any of you name a triple A game that could safely go in your top 20 games of all time? If you think that's an unfair question, think of what came out in years past:  Last year there was stuff like GTA V, Tomb Raider (despite what I think of that game, and Rayman Legends, among others. The year before there was Guild Wars, Spec Ops, XCom, Mass Effect 3, and Dishonored. The year before that there was Skyrim, Dark Souls, The Witcher 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Portal 2. Half of those games are in my top 20, some in my top 10! Hell, one of them's in my top 3.

Compare that to this year: We got a broken Assassin's Creed game, a broken Far Cry game, a broken Ubisoft car game, an Alien game that was good for half the experience, a disappointing Dead Rising game, a disappointing Dark Souls game, and some other largely forgettable shite. Yeah, there were some solid indie games, but in the end, this year was overall pretty shitty for gaming.

Meh, I don't really give fuck-all about most "triple A" games out there, so broken Ubisoft games are meaningless to me because I don't play the unbroken ones. This year wasn't as great as last year, no, but I wasn't as disappointed by it as other people seem to be. I kept myself entertained.

Good news is, is that next year is shaping up to be great.

No Mans Sky, Quantum Break, Star Fox, Zelda, Hotline Miami 2, Halo 5, Final Fantasy 15, Street Fighter 5, and many others. Next year will rock.

Half of the good games coming out next year were supposed to come out this year, so that's probably why :p

I was disappointed that Sony and Microsoft didn't have any games on the PS4 and Xbox One yet again this year that interest me.  But on Nintendo's consoles, I was pretty happy.  Granted, this wasn't the best year ever for gaming, but it certainly wasn't the worst.

I'm with Cary on this one. I played a few memorable 3DS games this year but nothing on the supposed "big boy" consoles that blew me away. I did enjoy Rainbow Moon until my PS3 had to be given and expensive resuscitation in August. That kinda took the wind out of my sails.

Thirded on this one. PS4 did come out with a couple of good games toward the end of the year (Guilty Gear Xrd, and I'm going to give Dragon Age: Inquisition a shot, since I liked the first on okay on 360). The next year looks good on PS4, but this year, Wii U and 3DS got most of my attention. Even PS3 and Vita did more for me overall than the PS4/Xbone twins.

My first thought when reading the rant was "Clearly, he doesn't have a Wii U" (which, of course, I already knew). But I see I've been thrice beaten to the punch there.

There was another part to my 'redundancy' rant blog that I chopped off where some of my favorite content this year was DLC. DLC for Diablo 3, Dark Souls 2 and even expansions like Rift: Nightmare Tide,  World of Warcraft (which I don't play), and as well as a new continent in ArcheAge, also some great tracks in Mario Kart 8. Also Shadowrun: Dragonfall was kind of the same game as before, and Lightning Returns was a sequel. In short, I agree with you.

My salt > your salt.  Except for Dark Souls and GTAV (and only because the series wasn't particularly deep to begin with), all those games you mentioned were dumbed down version of games that came out in the 90s or early 2000s. Yeah, I said it. At least this year we had Divinity: Original Sin, which actually pushed forward within the CRPG genre a little bit. Edit: oh yeah, you said AAA; I go nothing.  Maybe Alien: Isolation. Not even Bayonetta 2 got me excited. Good for what it is, great even, but what it is isn't so special anymore.

Divinity and Elite: Dangerous spanked all AAA games this year.  Indies weren't amazing for the most part, but more interesting.

Wouldn't call Rayman Legends a dumbed down version of a past game either.

You are right. I didn't see it up there for some reason.

It was a disappointing year (worst in decades maybe), but that doesn't change how you need to play Dragon Age Inquisition and Bayonetta 2. Both games I'll be returning to years from now. Wolfenstein and DKC Tropical freeze were pretty great too. And I'm still addicted to Threes.

I know I need to play both. I held off on Dragon Age because it wasn't greatly optimised until now, but that should change, and I don't have a Wii-U... which sucks because I really was looking forward to Bayonetta 2. Unfortunately if I get a console it will be the PS4 because, well, Bloodborne.

Can't fault you for that. There's an all too real possibility that I can only get two games next year, so I'm going with that and MGS5.

Have you played Ground Zeroes? If so, what did you think?

I liked it, just wish there was more story. Felt with all the side stuff there was enough gameplay and between how great the controls feel and the open structure, they could have something great for TPP. Just hope they remove that feature where time slows whenever you get caught for TPP.

Looking at the year, I would say it was a very lacking year for the AAA games outside the Nintendo sphere, handhelds and indies. Of course, don't forget that gaming has had weak years like this and probably will always have as long as the medium lives, so the best is to simply ignore and keep optimistic, especialy when 2015 is nearly around the corner and that is shaping up to be a better year than this.

despite the Far Cry game we got this year being broken when it released, it sure does play and look beautiful after a half-gig update.

I'm not nearly disappointed in my gaming year as others, I suspect.

Also - Dragon Age Inquisition.  That's a AAA title that delivers for sure.

If a game year seems less than stellar, in my experience, I chalk it up to an inescapable fact: that I haven't played enough of the offerings that were made available (the same applies to movies/tv/music). Every year generates special stuff. It just isn't always in the same places where we found it previously. Buck up. It's not as bad as you think.

Dude. I review games as a job. I don't think not having played enough is a problem.

Fair point. Not being a reviewer is the reason I haven't played enough.
Eh, they can't all be stellar years.

My comment might be invalid since I only touched Nintendo stuff this year, heck the only PS3 game I got this year was Burnout Paradise and that was a birthday present but still pretty fun. That and the Final Fantasy remake thing that I put off for Xenoblade. I'd say on other platforms, it might of sucked for everyone but I really don't know that much. I had alot of fun with the Wii U this year, I'd say this was the Wii U's best year so far. As for 3DS, it was great till my battery died in October. Next year seems to be looking good for Nintendo and everyone else too. 2014 didn't seem awful for games, I guess it was just disappointing for some.

But who could forget Twitch Playing Pokemon, and the Luigi Death Stare.

I was just looking at the list of games on that Las Vegas game awards show. There were a lot of memorable stuff, just very little I actually got to on those lists.

I am inclined to agree about the second half of 2014.  Nothing came out that had must-play writtten all over it for me.  Which is probably why I sank more time than I am willing to admit into Destiny.

The first half of the year was significantly better with inFamous and Wolfenstein.  Wolfenstein might not make it into my top 20 games of all time, but I enjoyed it so much that it might be sitting somewhere between 20 and 30.
