Snowshoe Race

Not the least about gaming, but I'm so freaking stoked I had to share. Did the snowshoe race this morning. I don't know how many people registered and ran it, and to be honest, I don't care. My goal was to finish, which I did, and my target time was 1:07, the slowest time last year. I beat that by ten minutes, and finished with seven people still behind me. I'm pretty proud of myself, first race ever, not just first snowshoe race, and I only started running five weeks ago. I've signed up for the next race in the series, which is 4.5 miles and will take place in three weeks. I'm planning on signing up for the last race, too, which is six miles, and is in six weeks.

Later, when I'm not so tired, I'll post some photos.

Apparently, the local news was there. I ended up in a background shot.

Joe - it ended up being 3.3 miles. But in 5" of snow with snowshoes on my feet.

Well hot damn. That's .2 miles more than I'll be running on flat pavement in the sunshine.

Official time was 57:15, and I didn't run the whole thing, alternated between running and walking. Hoping that I'll be able to run more in the next race in three weeks.

congrats, man, I knew you could do it!

I knew I could do it, it was just whether I would be walking it or running it. I did a combination of both. Walked the first 20 minutes with my friends who came for NJ for it, and then alternated running and walking, using the Couch to 5K week two workout (9o seconds of running, two minutes of walking). I actually passed three people doing that and I was gaining on two more just before the finish.

Thanks, Pete! The trail running club that puts it on has been subtly trying to get me to sign up for one of their races ever since I've known them. It was so cool when I came around the corner before the finish line and I could hear them all cheering me in. I finished 86th out of 93, with an official time of 57:15. Not bad, considering I just started running five weeks ago and haven't done any training in the last two weeks.

You know what? There's nothing more satisfying than proving to yourself that you can do what you set out to do. I can imagine the rush of coming to the end of that race to cheers. :)

Yeah, I'm still on cloud nine :D

Congrats on the race!  Also, it's kind of odd seeing you without that red scarf covering half your face like a ninja lol. Cool

My avatar pic was taken at the beach when it was -15. It was a lot warmer today :D

Awesome!  I did my first 5K run about 4 months ago for March of Dimes.  It was surprisingly satisfying and I had a feeling of accomplishment I didn't expect to get from participating in thr run.  It just like I did something worthwhile outside of my usual routine of things.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Those snow shoes are smaller than I imagined. I want some now.

They're racing snowshoes, pretty useless for anything that isn't packed down first. I managed to get my "yes, please" email out in time to get one of the 18 pairs of loaners available from the race director.

I'd love to get some, but it doesn't snow much down here in eastern pa. One day, I'll get a non-driving job and move up north; get some real snow in then.

Props to you my friend for not only finishing but beating that target time. Continue to kick ass on the next two races!

Thanks, Chris! I want that Badass designation so bad I can taste it! Oh, wait, maybe that's just the hot cocoa I taste...

And there's a link to photos from the finish of the race in my most recent blog post, if you're interested.

Awesome will check it out. I've been reading through all the blogs I've missed and I have 10 more to read before getting caught up!

I can see you! I can see you!

*peers closer*

wait, no I can't

Not sure why my area never tried out this kind of racing. We usually just do snowmobile or ATV racing. congrats on your epic win! Looking forward to photos.

I didn't see me at first, either. It wasn't until a friend told me they'd seen me on the news that I even knew it existed. At this point, due to getting interviewed a lot because of my job (a lot = more than twice, as far as I'm concerned), I'm kind of "meh" about the whole thing, and at the park, most of us usually yell "not it!" when we find out the media is coming. I'd rather be behind the camera than in front of it.
