Persona Q impressions

As I mentioned in an earlier blog I sprang for Persona Q after a couple of pints dissolved my resolve not to.

I'm about 20 hours in now and it's been a great experience so far. I was worried that being a Persona/Etrian Odyssey cross that it would be all first person dungeon crawling with very little in the way of story.

Thankfully the Persona side of the crossover is the dominant one and it is very story driven with typical Persona dialog and humour.

I haven't witnessed much in the way of social links but the characters from 3 and 4 are all there and once you complete the first dungeon you can mix and match as you please.

Characters from 3 still use the evoker to shoot themselves in the head in order to release their Personas. they even discuss it with their P4 counterparts when first meeting.

The Velvet room and demon fusions are present and still a vital part of building a strong team.

Items you find in the dungeons allow you to have stronger weapons, armor and accessories made and taking breaks to exit the dungeon, heal and stock up on supplies is pretty much required.

Also from Persona is hitting enemies with their weakness or a critical attack in order to trigger the "All Out Attack" . If enough members of you team hit an enemy with an attack they are weak against you get the opportunity for them all to jump in and lay a beating on the entire enemy group. Very satisfying.

The dungeons are also theme based. The second one is based on the Group Dating display that was shown in P4 during their Culture Festival.

That's it for now.

I want to play this cause I love Etrian Odyssey, but I still haven't finished Persona 3 and 4 and worry I'll be lost.

There are a lot of comments and scenarios that will be lost on you if you haven't completed those two games. I guess it could stand alone but you'd miss out on a lot of in jokes to be sure.

I'm about 25 hours in and have also been enjoying it (I'm halfway through the 3rd dungeon), but a couple days ago I decided to put it aside for awhile so I didn't burn myself out on it.  It is a little too grindy for me and to be honest if I didn't love the Persona characters so much, this would probably be the point that I stopped playing for good (which is what I did when I got around the 20 hour mark in both Etrian Odyssey games that I have played).

I am a little dissapointed that the characters are less developed and rely more on their one-note quirks than they do in the main games (for example it seems like chie talks about meat even more often than she did in P4 and Akihiko obsesses with protein too much), but I am still enjoying seeing the characters again and am interested in seeing the story play out.

I'll probably pick it up again once I beat Danganropa on the Vita.  I'm also currently playing the story mode in P4 Arena Ultimax because I really can't get enough of the Persona charcters.  Overall though, playing these Persona spin-offs are just making me look forward to playing Persona 5 more and more.

I have Persona 4 Golden to play and even though I finished the PS2 version playing PQ is making me really want to play Golden. I got Danganropa (the first one) on sale but I haven't really touched it.

Yeah they really do focus on specific quirks like Kanji doubting his sexuality and Teddie being a womanizer but I too love the characters so much I can forgive almost anything. I have laughed out loud a couple of times though.

I hope to start Persona Q soon.  I'm over 66 hrs into Dragon Quest IV and I think I'm really near the end.  As soon as DQ is over, I'm jumping into PQ.

I want to get Persona Q. They're also doing Etrian Mystery Dungeon out in March that I want to play.

I've given Daniel a choice to either play and start working on the game atleast or that I'm taking it from him to play myself, lol!  I'm still working on Persona 4 golden but I figure I'll be close to beating it soonish.

Are the characters from 4 tripped out when they see the characters from 3 put the evoker to their heads?

It tripped me out the first time I saw it.

Yep, there's a conversation about it at the beginning of the second dungeon.

I literally just bought this. I'm still playing Etrian Odyssey Untold though, and I've only finished Persona 4. Haven't even played 3.

Well just start the game using the P4 team. You meet up with the P3 team at the end of the first dungeon and they'll provide a little bit of their back story.

It's fun mixing and matching the teams once you have everybody

Up to the final dungeon in Persona Q, such a fun game. I've been dragging my heels a bit, but I'd better hurry before Majora's Mask comes out.
