I recently subscribed to USgamer.net's podcast, and in episode 7 this week, there was some really smart talk by the crew regarding the current state of triple-A gaming and consoles by regular members: Jeremy Parish, Kat Bailey, Bob Mackey, and Jaz Rignall. It feels almost like a 1UP podcast again.

The main thing that interested me was their comments on how the biggest studios are focusing on fewer games and making them better, and mid tier studios are downsizing to make smaller games for mobile devices, or distribution through Steam, or just going out of business.

It's interesting to see too, that a lot of the biggest games are being designed to last longer, which means making everything more like an MMO: with endless replayability, multiplayer components, and endless new content to buy. I, personally, don't want to play one game for a whole year. I've already pretty much burned out on Diablo III after 130 hours. There's more to do, but I need some variety.

And what about mobile? It seems moble devices like phones and tablets have captured the mainstream and pure gaming systems are more and more forced to serve niche audiences. Which is ok, I guess. I'll always favor a true gaming system over something that does everything. I just hope Sony and Nintnedo can still keep their handheld businesses alive in this smart phone world we live in now.

There was also talk about the move to steaming services and that we might get only one more console generation before everything goes to a streaming subscription model. When this happens, I may be permanently retro. I just like physical media to buy. It's part of the hobby I really like.

Anyway, listen to their podcast. It's pretty neat.

Happy algorithms pixlbits!

Oh nice, I'll give this podcast a listen. I've been looking for something interesting other than the two video game podcasts I currently listen to.

As for the issue of tablet gaming and console gaming, I wish there would be more connectivity between the two. Need for Speed and Injustice seem to do a good job in having their games be connected. Earning in game bonuses for playing on one device because of your progress in the other always keeps folks like myself playing on both platforms.

Kat's doing another RPG podcast starting very soon too. I'm going to be watching out for that.

There was a Destiny phone app, but it wasn't a game, more like a stat page. You could watch highlights of your gameplay there though. That was pretty cool.

USGamer podcast is pretty great. They came back last year, and there is also a Retronauts podcast that is still ongoing with the same people and others from 1up. It is just as good. Also, Kat Bailey is working on an RPG podcast coming soon.

Death of the Consoles was a really great subject to listen to these guys talk about. It's part of the reason why there is this interest in collecting physical copies of older games due to Sony, Nintendo not providing backwards compatibility with all of their software. I think GTA Vice city had some music removed from the PSN version and so did Jet Grind Radio.

I've been listening to Retronauts too. So I guess my title is a little bit untrue. I've been listening to Jeremy for a while now. I had to cut back on my podcasts though and Retronauts got the axe. If I find time, I'll add them back in though.

I'll always like a good physical copy.

It's like what I read about the begining of the internet when people were suggesting that no one would want to travel anymore because they could see any place on the net. Well, it resulted in more travel than ever. I kinda wish internet gaming would result in more physical media, rather than less, as it's going now. I guess I'll have to satisfied with collector's edition statues? I think not.

Yeah, while digital is convenient, I just feel better and prefer having physical copies. I know it won't get deleted off a hard drive and I can look at it.

Yeah, I'm been listening to their podcasts lately.  I can't help but follow anything Jeremy is involved with.  He has just about a perfect combination of video game knowledge, talent, and snark.  I like the other guys/gal too.

Speaking of "snark". I got to thinking about 1UP podcasts of yore and kinda miss Scott Sharkey. He had snark down to a science.

I missed out when they started their podcast and I've been playing catch up since then. I think I'm on episode 4 now. This one sounds good!

One nice thing about mobile is that it seems to have pulled a lot of the shovelware off of consoles. The DS and Wii were drowning in it but their successors seem much less clogged. But the App Store...man alive. You know I love mobile but drowning isn't near a strong enough word for all the crap on there.

The shovelware follows the crowd and the crowd is on mobile right now. Last gen it was on Wii.
