Episode 156: Driving With the Top Down

Posted on 07/17/2019 at 10:44 PM | Filed Under Feature

Stage Select:

1. The Sheikah Slate. It's basically the Switch in-game. It's Hyrule's equivalent of the iPad. Except that I can insta-travel with it instead of having to book a flight on HyruleHistoria.com ahd paying several hundred rupees. If only it were that easy to travel to Cancun in real life.

2. Mr. Handy/Gutsy. It cooks. It cleans. It takes care of the baby. It performs minor surgery - albeit not very well, judging by what happened to Beatrice when she was in Vault 101's sick bay for a sprained ankle. And it comes equipped with a buzz saw and a flamethrower. Can't beat that.

3. KOS-MOS. She's err, a good, useful companion, and well... weeeell, I should really be saddling up now.... oh, found the fire door....

Cage Match:

I'm going with Okami, and this one isn't even close in my book. Okami is one of my all time favorite games. Its cel-shaded graphics rank right up there with Wind Waker, Valkyria Chronicles, Ni no Kuni, and Dragon Quest VIII, and it's the best Zelda game that isn't a Zelda game. It's a great retelling of the Japanese creation myth with a lot of humor and a lot of combat against weird Japanese enemies. I have a confession: I really tried to get into the Team Ico games. I got the ICO/SotC collection on PS3 looking to see what the hype was about. To me, Shadow of the Colossus was Twilight Princess without, well, pretty much anything in Twilight Princess except the bosses. I know there's a loyal fanbase that swears by this game, but sorry, it never did anything for me.

Cary's Best Games of 2019 SO FAR Awards Show!

I skipped over KH3 so far because of work being a bit busy. I may have to pick it up now. From what I understand it's been the best selling game of the year so far. I just wish it had more Final Fantasy stuff in it.

My most anticipated game of the year is Dragon Quest XI for Switch, my second most wanted game of the year comes out a week from Friday. My favorite games of the year so far are Mortal Kombat 11 and the Tales of Vesperia remake.

Simple Greatness - The Windwaker

I was kind of taken aback by the Wind Waker's change in style from the GC demo, however, it was a great game. The GC Zeldas are my favorite of the series, along with A Link to the Past and Breath of the Wild. They were everything I wished the N64 Zeldas could have been.

I finally played Fallout 3

Fallout 3 was my first experience with the series. I had seen screenshots of the first two games. It was great wandering through the wasteland. However, New Vegas was a much beefier experience. I hope that gets a HD remaster. Too bad about all the drama between Obsidian and Bethesda.

As far as game series I missed out on, I have, surprisingly, never picked up an Elder Scrolls game.

Die, Spaceman! - Xenophobe

I saw this in the arcades a few times. Yes, it had a character who was a duck. I played it on collections later.

Episode 155: And now, magic rats.

Stage Select: I actually do rock out to game music when I'm alone in my car. One of my particular favorite pieces of car music is Fighting of the Spirit, which is the summon spirit battle theme from Tales of Symphonia.

CAGE MATCH: Both great games, but going to go with Space Invaders due to being an enduring classic, It's slow and deliberate (at first), not to mention graphically primitive, but it's about as tight of a design as Tetris was a few years later.

Have you guys ever considered doing a cage match of the major consoles of each generation? That would be an interesting series.

July Games I Want

A big hell yes to Fire Emblem. Maybe on the other three. I liked Wolfenstein II, kind of intrigued about a Nintendo-made Marvel game.

The God Eater 3 demo was a waste of time.

I always say I need new games as much as I need a baseball bat to the kidneys. And I've got two big games coming up this month - Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Astral Chain.

Handheld Massacres - Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword for the DS

That game came around the time of the knockdown, dragout, screaming divorce of Tecmo and Tomonobu Itagaki. I thought about getting this but never did. Apparently Itagaki chose the DS over the PSP because he thought the PSP was not a proper handheld console.

It's funny how things change. Nintendo was more open to M-rated games in 2008 than they were in 1993, yet were still prone to censorship and not releasing games in the US at all if they deemed them against their family friendly image. Sony built the PlayStation brand by promoting an edgy image. Now, Sony is getting flak for censorship of Japanese titles, while Nintendo has recently come out and said that censorship is a bad thing that inhibits the industry, and to let parents decide what is appropriate for their kids and use the parental controls every console has (in Nintendo's case, advertised by that cute video of Bowser being a good dad to Bowser Jr) to decide what's acceptable in their homes. A lot of this seems to be about the Senran Kagura games.
