Simple Greatness - The Windwaker

I bought my Gamecube from a friend who was moving to Europe. I didn't think much of it at the time... I hadn't been into video games for a little while, and I had just moved to Philly, where I didn't know many people. For a short while, I think it was 2003/2004, Nintendo's Zelda game The Windwaker was the most beautiful part of my life. While some people didn't like the cartoon graphics and the sailing, I loved both, and it remains one of my favorite Zelda games.

All my life I had romantisized sailing - and had done a little too, in Ocean City, MD. But I had always dreamt of it, and now there I was, along a fantastic sea, aboard a little sailboat that talked to me. I loved floating through the waves and discovering islands. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before, a beautiful freedom I had never imagined.

The game isn't without its faults - climbing through that tunnel in the beginning of the game looking for that mouse or whatever is insanely tedious - but the game provides many joys. I don't want to spoil things for people who haven't played it, but for me, the moment when the Hyrule tower rises out of the sea is one of my favorite in all of gaming history.

Nintendo released a more beautiful version of the game for Wii U a few years back, and I played a bit of it. Wish I had played more. I'm hoping they'll release it for Switch.

But, that day when I first started the game, and saw Link's footprints trailing him in the sand...that was a great day.

The game released a day after my 13th birthday and yeah, it was pretty damn pretty.

I've always wanted to play it. The remastered version for Wii-U is in my collection but I haven't found time for it yet. I love cell-shaded games and sailing ships. It's probably the Zelda game I most want to play.

you should definitely play it. You won't regret it.

If you love sailing then you have to try out Assassain's Creed Black Flag at some point. If you haven't already of course.

Wind Waker is a great Zelda game.  One of the best looking, too.  I was on board with the cartoony graphics even when everyone else wasn't.

Man I can't wait for the Link's Awakening remake!

Me too! I never finished the original, which I had for Gameboy Color.

I was kind of taken aback by the Wind Waker's change in style from the GC demo, however, it was a great game. The GC Zeldas are my favorite of the series, along with A Link to the Past and Breath of the Wild. They were everything I wished the N64 Zeldas could have been.

Yeah I love this game. And I loved Ocarina a lot at the time. I keep telling myself I’m gonna finish BoTW but I don’t.

I like cartoon art and animation, but I thought and still think Link's design in this is garbo. Enemies, bosses, and effects looked great though.

the monster designs are really good. But I like Link too.

It seems like Nintendo likes to re-release various Zelda games so I wouldn't be surprised if this game shows up on the Switch. Watch it be around the same time the new Switch handheld only versions start hitting the shelves.
