Episode 128: Nerds in Space

Posted on 02/16/2018 at 03:03 PM | Filed Under Feature

I think the matchmaking may have gotten better in fighting games, because I actually won a few matches in both Tekken 7 and Injustice 2 recently. Then again, my favorite character in Tekken 7 is apparently super cheap (Katarina), so there's that.

The Last Jedi was a mixed bag for me, because I also thought THAT scene just looked stupid if nothing else. I honestly don't care enough about the lore to care about whether it made sense; it just looked really, really cheesy and bad. Now the use of silence in that one scene later on, that was great. A recent episode of RedLetterMedia basically said what Angelo did about the director trying to subvert expectations more than tell a coherent narrative, and I can agree with that.

BUT, as a casual fan of the series who thinks the straight good and evil narrative is a bit stale at this point, I think Kylo's "who cares" speech was the most interesting thing in that movie plot-wise outside of the Luke and Rey scenes. I also thought the movie was visually entertaining, if way too slow at times.

I understand "It was lit, fam" and a decent amount of other social media slang, but it is funny when I teach my Intro to Social Media class and all my students think Facebook is for old people. SnapChat seems to be the big thing for them, along with Twitter. I kinda tend to like hiding things from people, which those platforms are not very friendly to (although I do use all of these, if not only so I know what's up when I teach the class) ...

Personally, I first noticed how hot Winona Ryder is in Mr. Deeds with Adam Sandler. I remember her shoplifting incident happened close to when that movie came out. I still need to watch season 2 of Stranger Things

My life sucked so bad I actually liked "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day. Yup. In my defense, I was also 14. Yeah, it was funny to hear Psycho Mantis trying to sound intimidating by saying "you're a fan of Maaaarioooo Kart, aren't you?" I'm nowhere near the MGS fan others are, but I definitely remember how big a deal it was because of my older brother.

My issue with Metroid Prime was never that it didn't tell you exactly where to go necessarily, but that at the time the concept of backtracking in order to progress was completely foreign to me. I believe I may have shouted, "well I know it's not in that room cause I've already been there." I've never minded the linear nature of 3D Zeldas personally. I get much more bored wandering around open worlds than I do when there's a story or character-based reason for whatever it is I'm doing.

You can turn off the hints in Metroid Prime though. I believe even on Normal mode you can say you don't want it to tell you where to go. I have always been a fan of Metroid in the sense of "these are neat time-wasters." Like with MGS, I just don't have the same level of affinity for the series others do. I noticed on NWP's recent comments, younger people like Casey and I have less fond memories of the original Metroid because it came packaged with modern games in the series, which really makes its older design apparent.

Yeah. Like I said, I remember enjoying the first three games and Underground 1 and 2, but the series now is just a joke. It's sad what happened with the most recent game. Even Lil Wayne had lost a lot of star power by the time he was out promoting it.

If you've ever seen the music video, it makes the war protest aspect of the song a bit more obvious.

Of course, I knew the history of the song prior to seeing the video, so maybe it was just easier for me to see it.

Metal Gear Solid V? They also have Metal Gear Online coming out, which uses those.

You just reminded me of the Sonic Adventure games levels where the crystal starts beepin when you're supposedly near it, but you don't know how high or low it is and what kind of terrain you need to get through, so it becomes trial and error where the indicator says the thing is right in front of you, yet no matter where you dig ... I'm shivering. May have also just vomited in my mouth a little bit.

I did not know that. Interesting.

The game looks like Space Invaders without the rows of aliens.

How many luftballoons are there? Did Superman ever get to meet Nena?

That looks a lot like Castlevania to me, given the architecture of the background in that frame, the monster enemy and what seems to be an inventory at the bottom.

Since you brought up a game called Black Tiger, here's the one that was somehow advertised on the PlayStation Store for PS4 at one point:

I'm still mostly just interested in Odyssey and Breath of the Wild as far as Switch goes. Cool screencaps. Digging the lighting in tha Mario one especially.

That makes two people on this site with family members who passed on Valentine's ... actually, I think my grandma either passed or had some sort of medical scare on Valentine's as well years ago (I only ever saw her in the hospital when I was young, so this is why I can't remember exactly). What is it with that holiday?

I can't wait to play Night in the Woods ... except for the fact I'll probably complete Yakuza 0 before dedicating time to ANYTHING else, but still. It does seem to be aimed at people around our age from what I've heard about it.

For me, 2001 was a bit rough because I had to learn about certain financial situations, but I bought my Gamecube so it wasn't all bad. 2015 was when I graduated with my Master's, so that year was pretty solid for me. Maybe whenever one of us is having a bad year, we should trade somehow. lol

I can understand not liking the stealth bit at the end, since it's what I usually have the most trouble with. I still think it was a neat concept executed pretty well though.

I know I heard about the bugs in Heroes, but I don't think I encountered any. I just thought the gameplay was a bit slow.

I'll believe you that you did not like the Spider-Man movies in general, but I get tired of some of the revisionist history I've seen people engage in with this stuff. To look at Internet forums, you'd think everyone hated those movies, which was the opposite of what was true at the time. I can buy there are some people like you that were never on board, but the widespread claim from so many people that they were already so above those movies gets tiresome.

So there's a rant that had nothing at all to do with you. Have a good weekend! lol
