I think the Game & Watch was so huge in Japan that it put it in first place worldwide. I never saw one either. I didn't even know anything about it until I started collecting in the late 90s. It's the same with the Famicon topping the sales charts in '84. The U.S. didn't get it for another year but it was tearing it up in Japan. It's interesting that sales numbers just in Japan can outdo the rest of the world. The percentage of people that owned a those must've been pretty high.
Apple II+ is sweet vintage tech. I never had a 5200 or 7800 but I remember seeing them being sold at the time. I was spending my money on stereo and photography gear. It's kind of weird to me how short a time I spent with home video game consoles back then, only 3 to 4 years. Arcades lasted longer for me, taking up the whole decade.
It's interesting that wiki doesn't make a huge distinction between gaming consoles and PCs, at least for the 80s. Both are just "home systems". Even handhelds are included in that. I kind of like that idea - just bundle them all into one list.
