Gamer's block? Yeah, kinda feeling it.

Lately I’ve been in a gamer funk. There’s been a lot of games coming out I want but none that I’m willing to drop $60.00 on. In my older age I’ve become more of an overly cautious miser it seems. As excited as I am about the new Tomb-Raider, I’m not THAT excited. I’m sure I’ll love it in my own special way but it will not be quite the same as getting Knights Of The Old Republic from a dear friend as a gift or picking up ShadowHearts covenant from Game Stop. The PS2/Xbox era was the height of my gaming innocence and since then my hyper exuberance has been replaced with a mix of pessimism and lukewarm enjoyment.

This didn't stop me from buying into the Tomb-Raider hype. I might as well be a big dumb fish on a sharp barbed hook! Though I like to see myself as “smart” and witty” there are moments I fall for the basest of consumer marketing and the stupidest of hype. I hate to admit to it but I’m not entirely immune to societal conditioning and advertisement driven trend setting.

It’s okay to argue with me. No one can be your “support pillar of unbiased knowledge”. I like to entertain my readers but for fuck’s sake, never stop thinking for yourselves!

This is sort of my round about way of apologizing to Chris, Jesse, Matt, & Blake for getting hot under the collar during the Tomb-Raider discussion. For the record, I still think you are all stand up guys!

Moving on, I have to get back to that whole “funk issue” I brought up earlier. My 360 hasn’t been touched nearly as much as it used to be. Even on steam I’ve become as elusive as a real life unicorn in Times square. I dunno guys, I’m just not feeling it right now.

Partly I’m afraid to get lost in it all again. Lately I’ve been a lot more productive with house chores and working on my own game in rpg-maker vx ace. There are moments I look at my game collection with disdain. I wonder how many lovers, drunken revelries, and illustrations I could have indulged in or created if not for my wall-flower addiction to digital entertainment. Then again, lovers and drunken revelries don’t always have happy endings so perhaps my sole regret is not becoming a better illustrator!

My next purchase will probably be Red Dead Redemption GOTY edition. It’s going for a sweet $21.00 on amazon and the only other competition it has is from Witcher 2: Enhanced edition that has a similar price.

I realize it’s weird to jump from expressing disinterest in games to discussing what my next game will possibly be. Put simply, even though I’m down for the count it don’t mean I’m out! (On steam I also recently downloaded Dragon's Nest. It's a fun little mmorpg but I suck at mmorpg keyboard controls!)

Don't feel bad Ben. I know what you are going through. There isn't absolutely anything that I'm looking forward to lol. Oh, except DuckTales of course. WOO-OO! Laughing  Red Dead sounds like a fine purchase. I hope to go back and play the Undead Nightmare DLC someday.

RDR might jump-start my enthusiasm again,Aaron! Granted I'm not the hugest Western-Movie fan alive but I don't utterly detest the genre either.

I feel you on the games front. I'm not often "shocked & awed" by pretty "uncanny valley" graphics and billion dollar budgets anymore.

By the way, the news of the Duck-Tales remake has me excited as well!

I've also not been playing many games, though I did restart where I left off Order of Eclessia. It's a silly, fun hobby, just get back into it when you feel like it, have and are willing to spend the cash, I say, especially if you're more productive without it. I'm glad someone else is in the same boat as I am. lol That Duck Tales news is pretty cool, though.

I don't know if I feel this way because I'm old & jaded or the gaming landscape simply isn't what it used to be,Joe. But yeah, getting me to drop $60.00 might as well be "Mission Impossible". lol.

I agree that there are more productive outlets. Gaming is becoming too rich for my blood, especially lately. (GOG & Steam ease that pain somewhat.)

I am with you. I have a hard time paying 60 bucks for a game nowadays. I spent 40 for three new ones last week. I almost bought the new God of War but, I played  them demo and decided to wait on a used copy instead. Anyway right now my time is tied up with Fire Emblem, so that is that.

I could use some loving J-rpg action right now. The new Fire Emblem looks amazing!

It is. I am playing it on casual right now just to get a feel for it. Then I am going back and play it for real. FE oldschool style.

....Where "death is real". FE certainly raises the stakes that way. You end up being protective of every character!

Oh I know. I am not new to FE lol. I think it is one of the games I have cussed out the most lol.

It happens man, I only ever play my games when i got to my Art & Anime society at Uni and i haven't touched my 3DS in months. I'm trying to play with my SNES emulators (and Snatchers) but i'never in the right mood. Frown

Gaming is like everything else I guess. Aka, you can burn out from over exposure. The love for the hobby probably comes back after you take a break.

I'm on again off again with games too.  I think that's just how it is. Sometimes I spend more time reading and writing about them then actually playing them.  I think in a way though, there's a real lack of surprises in games these days.  I'm lukewarm on new games myself, though I am interested in Bioshock and Ni No Kuni -- not that I've bought either.  Instead I've been playing old games I like -- Ninja Gaiden Sigma and KOTOR.

BrokenH

03/22/2013 at 09:58 PM

I'm still 100% on board for Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge. However, my best friend's birthday is coming up so I want to put aside more money for his gift.

I might even decide to save my money this month and simply let it carry over,Matt. RDR and Witcher 2 are great games but it's not like they're gonna disappear. lol.

I really want to get more into illustrating again. I've neglected it a lot.

I been there too. Got to a point where I was like "Have I actually outgrown video games?"  It passed, but I have to say even though I still enjoy them its just not the same. I can't really get into even a really good game the the way I could in my late teens and early twenties. And yeah I'd be a lot better drummer a much better writer if not for this time devouring hobby.

Ha, glad I'm not alone! I thought some of my friends would be up in my grill calling me a "traitor". lol. I do feel as if I could be a little more productive if I put games down awhile. I'll never be so drastic I'll sell off my collection (Unless it's a matter of survival) but it wouldn't hurt for me to actually "create things" again.

I hear yah. I started re-playing Deadly Premonition, and I just am so impressed with the game world. I like the characters and town so much. So much charm and personality-which is lacking in current games. I haven't played TR either. I might get Monster Hunter. I started re-playing KOTOR as well. Such good games.Cool

BrokenH

03/22/2013 at 11:58 PM

Deadly Premonition was my "game of the year" for quite awhile. There has been no game quite like it. While it wasn't pretty to look at I fell in love with its' people and its' story. There are not many free roam sandbox/survival horror/80' comedy/murder mystery/Twin Peaks tribute games on the market. lol.

There are very few games which I will pay $60 for, and mostly these are either games that are sure to be scarce on down the road or special titles like Ni no Kuni that I have been waiting for for a long time. The rest of them can wait.

BrokenH

I have much of the same view,Andrew. I try to snag up pleasantly unusual and rare games quickly but I hold off on the mainstream titles until they drop in price considerably.

Just be patient about new games coming out. I have not played 60 dollars on a game since gears of wars 1. I just wait for games to go sale then I pick them up. Even by doing that I have created a backlog of games to play. Red dead is a solid game to get you back into the mood. Love the voices and characters in the game.

BrokenH

03/23/2013 at 12:04 AM

Been wanting to try Red Dead awhile. I'm not what you would call a "Western fan" but I do appreciate good characters and good writing. I also agree there are plenty of games in circulation & plenty of time thus there's no rush to buy everything at full price. I could never understand the people who tried their damndest to do just that. They certainly have more money to burn than I do. lol.

Recently I decided to work through my backlog.  Currently two thirds or so of the way through witcher 2.

I've wanted Witcher 2 for awhile! Actually, I bought it through GOG but my pc simply couldn't handle it. lol. I guess for me the 360 is the only way to go!

Townz90

03/23/2013 at 12:59 PM

I've been in the same kind of funk mate. Real life sometimes has to take priority but only sometimes! The Witcher 2 is almost certainly next on my to buy list. It's going for around £12, here in the UK. Too good of a price to pass up. Red Dead is almost definitely worth a purchase. Like most Rockstar games, the story is stellar and the gameplay fun. 'fun' being the keyword!

BrokenH

03/23/2013 at 09:44 PM

It'll be hard to choose between Witcher 2 and RedDead, Townz! Both are top notch so it'll probably be a matter of which one is cheaper. I actually own Witcher 2 for my pc but sadly my pc cannot handle it. Actually it did okay up until the fight with the kraken type beast. It lagged so bad at that point I couldn't pull off the button prompts when Gerald was "riding the tentacle" so to speak.

While it's nice to always know you're getting a good game, especially with how expensive they are now, I do miss being surprised. I think the App Store is the only place that sense of discovery still exists for me. Kind of sad.

The last time I paid full price for a game was Halo 4 and though I will be picking up BioShock Infinite next week, those purchases are by far the exception. If Microsoft and Sony do decide to flip us the finger and block used game sales for their next systems, it's gonna screw my gaming way of life.

BrokenH

03/23/2013 at 09:46 PM

If next generation consoles forbid "used games" I'm dropping out of console gaming for good. I can always "go pc exclusive" or pick up the other consoles from this generation.

Machocruz

03/24/2013 at 12:22 AM

I've had that quite a bit recenlty. Although now I have too many games to get through.  I made the mistake of starting Skyrim, Morrowind AND Daggerfall recently, I get tired just thinking about it and don't touch either one for days.  Plus I'm hooked on Dwarf Fortress, which is a time vaccum itself. And someone gifted me the THQ Steam pack, which has like 10 games, huge ones like Saint's Row 2 and 3. Not to mention all the games I don't have that I want to check out

But maybe it's a good thing I have a backlog like that. Besides Wasteland 2 and Dragon Crown, I'm not enthused about much coming out this year. The next biggie for consoles is the new MGS, as far as I'm concerned. Say what you will about Kojima, but it's always a huge event when he drops a new MG.  He usually tries to push the envelope of game design.

I figure if we hit another "gaming crash" akin to what happened to Atari, I'll be ready Chris! My collection of older games is pretty vast so if things go bust I'm well prepared.

I just hope that new consoles play used games. If they cannot I'm out this generation. (Though I may buy up a PS3 and a wii to enjoy all the other games I missed. Hopefully by then I'll have a pc with better specs too)

I think we've all built up a tolerance to "shock & awe". The"purdy graphics" aren't making us cream our jeans anymore.

I recently bought Binding Of Issac off steam. Though I suck at it I'm enjoying it so far! I'll have to get around to Saints Row and Dwarf fortress eventually too.

The game that really broke my gamers block was Sleeping Dogs. Damn I love that game, it's so well written, and the small details make it worth your while. There's dating sim aspects, kareoke, and arkham asylum style combat but with kung fu. I love it!

And yeah the only game I will buy day one will be Bioshock Infinite because irrational games are a phenomenal company.

BrokenH

03/25/2013 at 12:49 AM

I'm hoping RedDead is as good as you say Sleeping Dogs is. lol. I also want to get Bioshock Infinte as well. However, I can bide a bit of time for a price drop.

I dunno man, I haven't had a "I'll buy dat game Day 1!" epiphany in quite awhile. Here's hoping I at least have some innocence left!

I've been in "gaming heaven" the past couple years because it was my first "mature" venture into the generation outside Nintendo for many years.  In ways I'm finally getting to the rational part of my hobby and can relate to what you are going through.  I don't see any real " new must have experiences" coming.  Even with the ps3 and xbox consoles coming.  There is so much out there to experience and choose from.

I guess, from recent experience, the beginning gamer hobbiest wants to play, buy and experience everything as quick as possible.  The seasoned gamer hobbiest, enjoys is for what it is.  A fun experience to play and talk about.  It's not necessary to spend all your cash and time on one thing.  Life is to robust.

Exactly! Stop to smell the flowers because hey, there are certainly plenty of them! I'm glad I've become a bit more patient too. I've saved a lot of cash that way.

I know how you feel on the whole game funk issue. I often look at my collection but with a different feeling. Seems like I have way too many games I haven't finished. I try to maintain a balance between work and play. With my Vita I sometimes mix the two. Playing while awaiting x-ray results. So games pile up on me.  It frustrates me at times.  I'm so into gaming culture and news that keeps me fresh. Switch off systems so I don't feel stale. But I had to take a break a time or two. Didn't last but a week! Guess it's just a part of me.
