Getting gifts usually leaves me flabbergasted and speechless. Especially if said gift is given merely because I blog online.  Back during my 1up days Dave said he’d send me a psp. I didn’t want to push it and I told him if he found someone more deserving in the mean time (Be it a child in need or beloved relative) I wouldn’t take it personal. After a few months I assumed the psp went to charity or a family member on account Dave is that kind of nice guy.

Well, life’s full of surprises! Today Dave’s “gift” arrived in the mail. It couldn’t have appeared at a better time on account I’ve been scraping my vacant noggin for “blog ideas”.

Dave, you’re the best. May haps you see something valuable in what I do and when I have difficult days it’s people like you that make life worth living. There are many people in the world who cynically enjoy breaking other people down for their own decadent amusement but only a special few are benign and compassionate enough to build someone back up again. If earth’s population was composed more of the later than the former methinks we’d be in a much better place right now!

Anyway, enough gush from me! Again, you’re awesome Dave!

Other topics 1 # Doodling

I’ve been drawing a lot more lately. For Alex’s birthday I drew another picture of his character Liam. The first picture of Liam in his pizza uniform is okay but it never really expressed what Liam’s powers were. In this one you can see Liam is a “shadow-shaper” due to his hidden partly demonic heritage! Shadow shapers are more or less like Eddie from Guilty Gear. Aka, they can shape living darkness into monster familiars and all sorts of lethal weaponry. (I guess they are also like Jackie from The Darkness comics too. Extra point for my geek cred,oh yeah!)

I also drew little guy “Spin” who uses his huge bowl shaped hat as a weapon & break dancing aid, Xander The Brander (I know he looks like John Simm wearing Goenitz’s clothes and that’s what I was going for!), and these two sexy sketches of Amy and Deidre. (The later two were drawn earlier. Might have shown them before.)

Sorry if the females are in more provocative “sexy poses” than the males. I could draw Xander hiking up his wizard robe or Spin dressed in a tuxedo holding a glass of wine but those will have to wait. (Awwww!)

Other topics 2# Women I’d like to see address feminism & objectification of females in videogames

Most of you know how I feel about Anita Sarkeesian (She’s “aight” but I don’t consider her a knowledgeable gamer geek in the truest sense) so I thought of other women I’d like to see address the same issues.

Felicia Day

Felicia Day has been in the geek sphere since her guest appearance on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Since then she’s moved onto other awesome projects that include Eureka, The Guild, and Dr. Horrible’s sing along blog! She has been around long enough to experience both the wondrous and revolting sides of geek and gaming culture. Her input would definitely be insightful!

Nixie Pixel

Nix is smarter than me by far and she makes my knowledge of tech look like the crudely drawn napkin notes of a machine hating ludite! Yeah, Nix is “hawt” but if you go to her you tube videos “just for the tits” you’re missing out on a wealth of helpful tech related information. I’d be interested to know Nix’s opinion on objectification and feminism both because she’s more open with her sexuality and because she has actually taken flak from feminist geeks in the past.

 Jessica Nigri

Jessica has no problem cosplaying as sexy game heroines and she comes off as both cheeky and smart! I bet she has extensive foresight into what happens in the cosplayer community and she’s a gamer too. Being most feminists in gaming see scantily clad female characters as “negative portrayals” I’m left to wonder, how would Jessica respond to that?

Jennifer Hepler

Jennifer is a writer for Bioware and she put up with quite the shit-storm when Dragon-age 2 failed to meet expectations. To say Jennifer was “harassed” is putting it lightly and most of the things written to her were sociopathic and misogynistic. If there's anyone who has seen the dark-side of fandom and geekdom it's Jen.

Many people accused her of trying to push homosexual relationships down gamers’s throats but keep in mind these same-sex romantic trysts were “optional.” There was also an uproar when she stated she “didn’t play many games” but given as to how busy she was at that moment, can you blame her?

It’s difficult for me to comment on how good or bad Jen’s writing is. I’m sure DA 2 wasn’t the only game she worked on and let’s be honest here, a few blunders aside, Bioware is renowned for its’ excellent story telling! Wanting to burn Jen at the stake for one fumble seems a tad unfair to me. Beyond that, what writer isn’t guilty of a bit of “Mary Sue/Marty Stu” empowerment fantasy?

Anyway, I hope Jen is still at Bioware and reading her first hand account of fighting hate and dealing with close minded gamers with a “hetero-only” mentality would be a fascinating and enlightening article!

Raychul Moore

Raychul Moore gets hits for being gorgeous. There’s no doubt about that! But I absolutely love how she geeks out over rpgs and shooters! Raychul is a ditz only in that satirical way that let’s you know she’s smarter than she lets on! Akin to other female geeks, Raychul has been grilled for getting inane trivia wrong and not liking games everyone else liked. It’s funny because as a guy no one has ever got up in my face and made death threats over me mispronouncing “Xenomorph” or saying Torchlight 2 was better than Diablo 3. My point being, “girls” seem to get flamed extra harshly for their opinions and mistakes within our lifestyle. Raychul’s thoughts on being a gamer, geek, and a cosplayer would be eye opening!

Rhianna Pratchett

If you wikipedia “Rhianna Pratchett” you’ll realize she’s written for many of the best games out there. Bioshock Infinite? Yup, she was there! Tombraider? Ditto! Rhianna has likewise took flak from the political correctness police. Remember that big hooplah over Lara “possibly” being raped only for it to end up being a brief scene where a bad guy barely felt Croft up before getting his ass kicked and his teeth kicked in? Yeah, that  hooplah! It’s a bit ironic that such a prestigious female writer would draw criticism from radical feminists and white knights but sure enough, some people have way too much free time on their hands.

PS: Rhianna is the daughter of Terry Pratchett who created Disc World! Talk about one talented family!

Damn, that was sure nice of him. Plus bargain bins are dominated by PSP games now, so you can get a lot of games for cheap. One I really recommend is Mega Man Powered Up. Best game in the series and on the system IMO.

A good Megaman game on the psp?! Prayers answered! I'm on top of the world,Cas!

There's also Maverick Hunter X. Both look awesome, yet sold terribly, so I'm betting if you need a Mega Man fix from the bargain bin, PSP will serve you well.

That's good to read,Joe! Seems like there's a lot of diversity on the psp and I've been missing that a lot!

It's also a nostalgic bonus Megaman still lives on the psp!

I only know of 2 of those women.  I would love to hear their stance on feminism too.

BrokenH

04/13/2013 at 05:55 PM

Yeah, I'd like for a woman who is not as "prudish" to give her stance on feminism & objectfication. I could have used the word "conservative" but it's a complex term and I imagine not all conservatives are narrowminded about sex and the laws of attraction. lol.

Good art as always.

Hope you enjoy your PSP.  Some of my favorite games on it include Loco Roco 1 & 2, Ys Seven, Mega Man Powered Up, Half-Minute Hero, and Gurumin.

I'm looking forward to some Jrpg goodness, Cary. Especially Y's 7. Awww, yeah! Dave already included Crisis Core, bless his heart!

Nice art as always Ben. I really like Liam and that Spin dude. Plus you got a psp and Crisis Core? Score! I second Half-Minute Hero. Also if you like Grand Theft Auto ( I don't think I've ever seen you mention that series lol)  I'd recommend Chinatown Wars.

BrokenH

I'm not huge into GTA. After San Andreas and Bully I fell out with Rockstar a bit. However, Red Dead looks interesting enough!

I've heard quite a few good things about Half Minute Hero so I'll look it up! Thanks,Aaron!

You should get a decent sized memory card for your PSP cause there's lots of good PS1 games on the PS store you can play on it. I reccomend P3P, and P2 too. I also think you should stay away from The 3rd Birthday cause its story is pure cancer (good gameplay though)

BrokenH

04/13/2013 at 09:31 PM

It's really a shame 3rd Birthday's story is cancerous,Kay. That might prevent PE from having another sequel which breaks my heart. I may pick it up on the cheap for the gameplay though!

I'll also be snagging up anything by Atlus which goes without saying!

Kayshire Cat

04/14/2013 at 02:46 AM

If you do play it just know that it's ending basically destroys the series. It is offensive to a lot of fans.

BrokenH

04/14/2013 at 12:02 PM

A lot of endings seem to do that lately. It's true, I'm very attached to the first two games. Perhaps the ending in 3rd Birthday will be ignored and Square/Enix will do a better follow up PE game? Methinks I'm hoping for too much!

Kayshire Cat

04/14/2013 at 07:44 PM

Well I'll put it this way in order for them to continue the series it's ending HAS to be retconned. i'm not kidding when i say it literally destorys the series.

Legally they cannot stick to the "mitochondria arch" because of legal reasons. Guess that's a complication that happens when someone bases a game around a book & movie. Then again, mitochondria are "real" so it seems silly to claim royalties on what's pretty much science. Can no other game base its' premise around celluar growth and mutation? Hmmmmm......

So many great games for the PSP. I've got about 32 GBs worth on Pro Duo memory cards. Actually you can buy cheap Pro Duo shells that allow you to use Micro SD cards in your PSP. That way you can grab a 16 GB micro sd for less than 20 bucks and store a shitload of games from PSN on it.

And in other good news, I can finally stop harassing you about not having a PSP. LOL

04/13/2013 at 10:18 PM

That's right I'm "in the club" now Peter! Behold my trendy PSP and TREMBLE! (I'm only one hand-held generation behind. lol.)

I'm really excited about all my J-rpg possibilities now. It feels SO GOOD!

mothman

04/13/2013 at 10:48 PM

Fuck yeah! I'm excited for ya Ben.

If I thought it would work I'd send you an 8 GB full of JRPGS but A. They won't work and B. I'm not into piracy. I'm sure that at $5.99 a pop you'll probably avail yourself of a few.

Here's what I have on my memory cards for RPGs right now:

P2: Eternal Punishment - Haven't really touched it yet

P3 Portable - Not nearly as good as the PS2 version but some people like it. LOL

FF Origins (1 and 2),FF V, FFVI, FFVII, FFIX and FF Tactics War of the Lions.

Wild Arms and Wild Arms 2

Front Mission 3

Breath of Fire 4

Threads of Fate

Legend of Mana

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain - Fuck Yeah!

Parasite Eve and PE2

Ape Quest - LOL. It's an Ape Escape RPG how cool is that?

Vagrant Story

Hexyz Force (PSP) - I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Your mileage may vary

Arc The Lad, Arc The Lad II (best one of the PS1 games), Arc The Lad III

Valkyria Chronicles II

Alundra

Grandia

Welcome to the family Brother Ben. Soon you shall be delving further into the Playstation community, mwahahahahaha!

Nice to see you're still making progress on your game! I look forward to trying it out =) I'm also about to put a blog together about my game, and how it's slowly coming together. I'd love to especially get your input, as a fellow designer-in-training! I'm about to work on it now!

BrokenH

04/13/2013 at 10:39 PM

I'll stop by, bro! Production on my end is kinda split down the middle. It's been great on the artistic side of things but kinda "meh" and lazy on the RPGmaker side of things. lol.

I'm finding more & more that having an rpg with branching paths is a bit much. I remember my friend Blake warning me it might prove to be too ambitous and I think he hit the nail on the head!

Regardless, I'm excited about having a PSP as well!

jcal94

04/13/2013 at 10:59 PM

It'll actually have to wait a bit, sadly. My girlfriend drew the two characters I have so far, but she doesn't want me showing them until she has them colored, which she needs to get done still. I may still try to get a bit of a story blog up though, and maybe save the drawings for a character one! I'll decide sometime tonight, haha!

Some women like to objectify their own self, as proven by those cleavage shots.  Not sayin' just sayin'.

BrokenH

04/13/2013 at 10:56 PM

I don't really have a grasp on what "objectfication" is anymore,David. lol. Is it attention whoring? Don't we all want to be perceived as "desirable"? Is merely dressing "sexy" objectifying oneself? Are sexual fantasies in our heads objectification?  It's a thin line of contemplation to walk along.

Call me crazy, but I think "objectification" has become an incorrect cache-phrase for "biological drive".

I'm kind of tired of certain people trying to make me feel guilty for being aroused by women. It's not something I can turn off at a whim.(Believe me, I try sometimes)

However, even when aroused I can be polite and show restraint. Figured I'd mention that before someone else posts "Are you saying women are asking to be raped just cuz they iz dressed like that & becuz you have biological drives you iz entitled to them??" No, but I am saying they're dressed like that to get attention in the first place. (Yet they should still be respected like any other human being and judged based on how they act as opposed to what they look like.)

On that note, I'm so glad I've never been to a con, bro! Though I'm shy and try to be nice I am afraid my eyes would linger a bit too long on certain cosplayers. It would suck if I made any female feel "uncomfortable" or "creeped out".

Guess I just have to remember to keep eye contact at all times and grin away even if I'm anxious and sweating bullets! Man, even talking about this possible scenario makes me stressed out!

 Ben + Social gatherings=Fail!

I hear what you're saying.  My comment might not actually be accurate.  I read a few of your previous blogs, then commenting on this one, which has a completely different topic.

I agree that you shouldn't be made ashamed of desiring beautiful women, or any women for that matter.  You're correct, sexuality is a strong inheret desire, second to hunger I've been told.  I'm not a ladies man, but I've gotten around, and made so many mistakes (none permanent, thank God.).

Sexual attraction is a complicated issue.  I'll be concise and try and stick to the topic.  If a man or woman wants to show skin to make their brand (their self) more profitable, I have no complaint.  That is the result of a free society.  Heck, when I went to Europe back in 1986 (10 years old) I saw titties everywhere on the beach, and my gaze was locked desperately onto them.  They were on boradcast TV, even (which, by the way, I think Canada allows female breasts on TV, but that was a long time ago, and I could be wrong).

There's definitly some society control at play in America when it comes to sexuality.  Indeed, it is oppressive for those who aren't so ashamed of their body, or of looking at  other bodies.  Then again, there's a nudist camp located about 20 miles from my house.

Sorry if my stance seem firm.  I like exploring the topic.  In the future, I'll make sure to direct such comments to their proper blogs.

Edit - I am a different David than the generous PSP giver!

BrokenH

04/14/2013 at 10:23 PM

Ha, thought it was you, bro! Especially because your profile lists you in NC. lol. Still, imagine my embarassment if I said "Dave is that you?" and you still turned out to be another David. Again, I know lotsa Daves!

It's okay to be firm on your stance and yeah, it's a complicated issue! I actually don't consider objectification wrong up until a certain point. But like all things it gets messy when a certain line is crossed.

That is a really awesome gift. Looks like you probably got a ton of PSP games to play now! Luckily, most of them can be found for dirt cheap (though I imagine that won't be forever since the system is being phased out in America).

And great picks for some alternative female perspectives. The only one I hadn't heard of was Ms. Pratchett. I remember when Raychul used to be a pretty popular blogger over on 1up!

BrokenH

04/13/2013 at 10:58 PM

Yup, Ray even dropped by my blog a few times. She's really nice. Class act all the way!

As for my newly accquire PSP, it feels like a whole new world is opened to me for exploration! Time to get my adventurer hat and my adventurer heels....er, I mean my adventurer boots!

Other than ol' Fi Dizzle, the rest of the women seemed to objectify themselves (whatever that even means these days), which I'm totally cool with. I mean if I had abs, I'd damn well make sure I showed them off at every given opportunity. Free PSP for blogging!? That's a pretty sweet deal. Evrytime I lose hope in humanity, someone somewhere surprises me.

BrokenH

Yeah, I've flaunted my more attractive features before too,Townz. I walk a lot so I've already been told I have a nice ass and nice legs for a guy. lol. I've also been mistaken for rock-star types now & again.

Objectification is an umbrella these days. Aka, we all do it to an extent yet it's used as a "mark of shame" in an argument.

That Dave fellow soundsl like an awesome guy! Now is a good time to get PSP games too. I recently finished up Mega Man Powered UP. I second the other recommendations for it mentioned above. And it's got so much content it could keep you busy for a long time. And make sure to grab Jeanne d'Arc. I think you commented on my review of that? Great game Smile

Dave was one of my bros from 1up. Heck, he's probably here under another id. lol. I'm hoping he made the migration. He also supposedly lives really close to me. My problem is I know a lot of guys named Dave or David. However, by looking at his address and random profile information I'm sure I can find him. I'll be writing him a thank you letter at the very least!

I'm likewise excited about the psp library. I think I'm in for a grand ol time!

Congrats on the PSP! That's awesome. It's nice to hear a story about a 'good' person online, rather then most of the stories we all hear on a daily basis (so-and-so is such a troll, etc etc). So yes. Awesome indeed. If I might add in my own recommendations.... Persona, P2 IS and EP, P3P, and Hexyz, along with a few old FF ports (FFIV Complete is AMAZING), Lunar (Silver star story remake), and oh so many more. Lucky you, dig deep and ye shall find treasure....

Also- nice 'doodles' (although I would hesitate to call them as such- seem more like full on works of art as compared to my 'doodles' anyways); haha...--> keep it up!

I apologize because I know I've contributed to awful stories about trolls on the net. But hey, at least this story is positive to balance out my written scrawls of daily angst. lol.

Glad you enjoyed the illustrations. To me I don't consider em finished until they're cleaned up & colored though some illustrators can really do eye popping art while sticking to black, grey, & white!
