Ben geeks out over Dissidia and other psp stuff!

If there’s one genre I’m kind of at odds with it’s fighting games. As much as I love them in short bursts almost nothing about them amazes me. Sure, I enjoyed Mortal Kombat 9 for it’s surprisingly good story line and generous amount of gameplay modes. I enjoyed Persona 4 Arena mostly based on nostalgia factor and for how wonderful my favorite rpg characters look in glorious 2D. KOF 13? Well, it’s simply a very well rounded brawler all together and I was learning how to be mercilessly cheap with King!

Yet as fond as I am of all these games they didn’t break any new molds for me. Arenas were still constrained to small areas and cancels, rush downs, special moves, blocks, and counters blurred together in a sea of mediocrity that carried from one punch fest to the next.

I was thinking about all this when eyeing Dissidia at the pawn shop. A fighting game with Final Fantasy characters? How “fun” and “time consuming” could that be? Against my own scrutiny I decided to pick it up and I’m quite glad I did!

Dissidia really is a “new kind” of brawler. Running along walls and flying around like a super saiyan definitely took an adjustment period to get used to. The environments are huge and you can use your surroundings for tactical advantages. Between bouts you can equip armor, assist items, and yes, even summons. I’m sure to many of you with psps this is “old hat” but for a guy like me I was giddy as a kid on Christmas! Put simply, I’ve NEVER played a game similar to Dissidia before!

So yeah, there are still cancels, rushes, combos, reversals, and all that other fighting game jargon we’ve heard thrown around at EVO. It’s just Dissidia makes an even grander spectacle of it all as you toss around tornadoes, shoot lightning, and do quick time events to pull off EX moves perfectly. Aka, there’s a little bit of Asura’s wrath in there too but the game doesn’t penalize you too harshly for not succeeding at every single prompt it gives to you.

So far my only gripe is the lack of female characters. There’s Terra and Ultimacea and that’s about it. Still all things considered, a roster of 20 nostalgic FF characters for a first entry isn’t bad at all. Compared to the first outing of Blazblue, Dissidia it outright generous by comparison!

I also like navigating characters around the exploration grid. You can find treasure and you fight “phantom enemies” before facing off against a big bad boss like Garland,Kefka,or Sephiroth (Aka, every fan-girl’s favorite murderer sociopath!) Of course the phantom enemies are merely weaker variants of the main villains so in actuality you’re rumbling with inferior clones of pre-existing combatants. (Okay, I guess that brings me up to two gripes. Er, sorry!)

I honestly didn’t think Dissidia would impress me as much as it did. Needless to say, the psp is making a good first impression on me. The games on it seem more experimental than those on the big consoles right now. As such I don’t mind the very slight dip in the graphics department.

Other games I got

Ogre Battle: Let’s cling together

Why? It’s Ogre battle, duh! Um, don’t expect my thoughts on it for awhile. Ogre battle is a deep tactical rpg so playing it 30 minutes before writing an impressions piece on it seems like a grave disservice.

FF Tactics: War of the lions

Yeah, I know it’s just a re-mastered version of the original game on the PS1 but being I no longer have that copy this little gem was a must get!

Jeanne D’Arc

I’ve read both really good and really bad things about this one. It’s yet another tactical rpg so I’m officially delving into masochist territory now! Jeanne is one of my favorite historical female heroines so it was a no brainer. So long as this game has a good story I can forgive any minor faults.

Games I’m thinking about getting next month

3rd Birthday

Many Parasite Eve fans have warned me Aya Brea’s lovable tough cookie persona was obliterated in this follow up sequel to the first two games. As much as it pisses me off to see Aya meek and whiney, this does look like a fun 3rd person shooter with rpg lite mechanics.

God Eater Burst

There’s something about God Eater that is just so delightfully “anime cute” and “dystopian  apocalyptic”  simultaneously! It’s as if Monster-Hunter, Evangelion, and Highschool Of The Dead were put into a blender. Color me intrigued!

Dissidia Duodecim

I’m enjoying the first entry so much this one might be worth it for the extra characters.

Ys 7

I love Ys so this one is pretty self explanatory!

Ah, fighting games. So little to love, but so much love for so little. Smile Seriously, I feel the same way. I really like fighting games, but only for about the first 20 minutes before I really start getting my ass handed to me, because it's been a long time since I really sat down and worked out combos and moves for fighting game characters. That being said, I still find them interesting and wish I could get back into that mindseto of really getting into a fighting game like I used to.

I was BIG into fighting games during the arcade days. After that my nostalgia began tapering off over the years. I'm also kind of mad some of my favorites never got more love. Where's another Killer Instinct or another Rival schools? Where's a new Dark Stalkers or a new Guilty Gear?

Yeah, I'm probably coming off as a self entitled spoiled brat. Sorry about that. lol.

I like my fighting games, but I agree with everything you said. Man, I would LOVE a new Rival Schools.

It's odd because capcom brought fighters back then almost destroyed them again. I got tired of paying for the same game with slight variations over and over again. Granted, they did it before but I'm "tired" of it.

And yes, another Rival Schools would be great!

It sounds like you got some great games Ben. My brother let me borrow Dissidia a while back and I still haven't played it. He said it's very addicting because you are constantly unlocking new items and what not. I agree that they should have more than two female characters. There's plenty of terrifc FF female characters! Celes, Freya, Rydia..

Also, not trying to bum you out, but I couldn't get over the slight lag effect in War of the Lions. I've played the ps1 version of that game to death lol. At least once a year. Supposedly the translation is a lot better and the story makes more sense though.

Yup, I heard there's lag when War Of The Lions does light particle effects. I'm hoping I can overlook it,Aaron.

Duodecim has a lot more female characters so I'm probably going to snatch it up at some point. It'll be worth it just so I can play as Lightning,Yuna, and Tifa!

well, that looks pretty much like my psp wishlist.  I always preferred srpg and jrpgs on handhelds.  Not sure why.

Probably because Jrpgs are still very diversified on the hand helds. I wish I'd get stuff like God Eater,Ys, and Duocedim on the 360 but alas, microsoft hates me!

Sounds like you died and went to RPG heaven!

Lots of great games listed though, all of which are the games I want to play should I ever get my hands on a PSP. Hopefully it'll be soon. Perhaps I'll start looking on Craiglist and other local trading sites?

BrokenH

04/15/2013 at 01:56 PM

You may even be able to find a psp cheap on Amazon,Chris. And I'm totally in rpg heaven!

Maybe one of these days I'll be able to snag a PSP. And maybe one of these days a DS will fall into your lap. We'll be able to tell each other which awesome games we need to get next, lol. Hmm...my brother never plays his PSP...will he even notice it's missing if I swipe it?

Ha ha ha! I can see it now. "Sorry bro, I misplaced yo psp!" As for next gen? I'm not even sweating it Tami. Plenty of great stuff from this generation and a bit before it. I'm already behind in the gamer "stay modern" races and I don't have a problem with it either!

DS is current gen, sweetie. And you and I will always be behind the times because we be poor folk. I know I don't care, do you? Nope, didn't think so.

BrokenH

04/15/2013 at 02:23 PM

At least as "poor folk" we have more appreciation for certain things,Tami. I imagine when someone is rich they always nonchalantly say "Oh, I'll just buy another one!"

Of course I shouldn't make a blanket statement about "all" wealthy people. I'm sure there are people that have tons of cash yet they can still appreciate gifts and appreciate other people.

When I was on the streets for a little while I also bumped into a lot of ungrateful homeless people who felt entitled to everything. It was sad because whenever I got a free bowel of soup or a free sandwich from volunteer workers you better believe I was grateful and expressed my gratitude right away!

We certainly have more appreciation for what we have than a lot of people, Ben. I've had to work for everything I have all my life. In the end, I think I'm better off for it. I certainly appreciate it when a friend sends me something out of the blue, like your PSP and my current laptop.

Things become more precious when you work for them. As for "tech gifts", I totally appreciate them too! I have to save quite a few months if I want a new pc or game system. I cannot go out and buy them on a whim!

Ben -

I'm happy to see that you're making good use of your PSP so quickly. I was afraid it might have gotten damaged in transit, even though it was only going from the south side of Asheville to the north. Enjoy playing those RPGs.

It's in tip top shape, mate! You are correct, it's good it only had to travel a short distance. I kind of wonder if we've already bumped into each other somewhere. lol.

The psp is great for rpgs and believe me, I appreciate that fact. The 360 has left me a bit high & dry lately.

I tried Amalur but while it has fun combat the npcs and the world they inhabit are lackluster. I'll probably be more fond of Witcher 2 and Mass Effect 3 once I finally buy them for the 360.

That stated, next month I'm getting another psp memory card and another psp game. I could use a change of pace and sony as a whole does cater more to my eclectic tastes.

Nice! You are definitely drowning in SRPG goodness lol. And I've always heard Dissidia was good but it was never high on my list of games to get...but that picture with Terra! Got my nostalgic juices flowing (okay, that was a strange metaphor). I'll be keeping an eye out for it now Smile

Dissidia Duodecim is the way to go. It's the sequel to the original with even more characters. It's only 19.99 on amazon right now too!

Dissidia is one of my favorite PSP games, too.  You should get the 'sequel,' it is worth it for the extra characters (like Tifa and Kain).

You should also get Ys Seven as well.

The only thing about God Eater that interests me is the music was composed by Go Shiina, apparently.

And get Loco Roco 1 & 2!  You need some happy in your life.  Plus it's a good way to tell what goes on inside my head 24/7.

Glad you liked my message!  Feel free to send me stuff, too.

BrokenH

04/15/2013 at 09:36 PM

Dave sent me both Roco Loco games so I'm set Cary. lol. I'm definitely interested in both Ys 7 and Duodecim. They'll likely be snatched up pretty early on!

The PSP is great for fighters, barring its tiny controls (Well tiny for me because I have big ass hands). I just wish my control numb would stop moving on its own even when I don't touch it. I really want to get a Vita just so I can play PSP games upscaled with a real analog controll stick. As for Dissia, I played a demo and liked it but couldn't get into it. I haven't played any FF other than X and I still couldn't get into it.

Soul Calibur Broken Destiny looks amazing but it's surprisingly expensive still. (Though not completely out of the ball park fortunately)

I also want to try Blazblue Extend on the psp as it seems to have all the characters & their stories missing from continuum shift.

I really loved the PSP. Not sure we exactly dig the same type of games, but I think Patapon is worth a look for you maybe. I'm sure there is a demo if you hop on the PS Store. Worth a try I think (I was also going to suggest LocoRoco, but it seems you got them already).

There's so many games I don't even know about Matt. lol. I'm simply better versed in Japanese games when it comes to hand helds. However I also have Chains Of Olympus and though I don't like Kratos as a protagonist I loved the GOW games for their gameplay. Should be fun!

I also might have Patapon but I'm not 100% sure.

Dissidia is a good game. I just wish they'd do a HD remaster of it for PS3. But then, the PSP does have quite a few nice games on it. My favorite PSP game is Valkyria Chronicles 2. It's not as awesome as the PS3 original, but it's still a fine game and worth checking out if you want a taste of the PS3's best game.

BrokenH

04/16/2013 at 12:38 PM

Dissidia is totally a franchise that would do well on a bigger console. I find it strange it hasn't jumped to the PS3 yet. As for Valkyria Chronicles 2, thanks for reminding me! I'll definitely be snagging it up!

So many great games Ben! I bought Dissidia Duodecim last year and played it for 70 hours! I agree the series feels like a new kind of brawler. This remix/sequel definitely makes up for the lack of female characters in the original!

So many SRPGs especially. All of them are great. Have fun!

I'm sure I'll put in a lot of time with Duodecim. I already have decided it's a must get,Kev!

I would have responded sooner but I've spent periods lost in Ogre Battle. lol. Shame on me. I meant to start Jeanne D'arc first!
