God eater burst: Closing thoughts

I just beat God-eater’s main story arch. Wow, I actually got teary eyed! The first ending really was that powerful which is rare when it comes to videogame story-telling. Of course there is yet another ending with the “Burst” expansion but I kind of doubt it can compare to what I just experienced. I wish I could talk more about Shio and Lindow but I’m kind of afraid I’d spoil something for those of you who still have a psp yet have not finished  GEB it its’ entirety.

Mostly my opinion from before still stands. GEB is a great game. I did notice the last few battles got frustrating as hell. For awhile I was genuinely pissed off but after making a new shield, a new sword ,a new gun, and switching out equipment based on Aragami statistics even those drudge-fests became much easier. GEB has sort of a mega-man meta-game behind the scenes. Aka, sometimes an earlier blade or gun you put away is still useful if it happens to have elemental properties a certain powerful Aragami is weak against. Aka, you can’t rely on one single weapon set throughout the whole game. It’s expected of you to switch weapons out once in awhile based on your encounters. The part of me that adores strategy really likes that about GEB but the more lazy part of my psyche that simply wants to rush through to see the story-line sees it as a drag once in awhile. Maybe later in the game you really can make “the perfect gear” but I bet it takes a crap load of rare parts! (And there’s only so much grinding I’m willing to do!)

In the future it would be nice if characters could actually “level up”. I noticed throughout the game each protagonist could be taken out  in 2-4 hits, especially later on. Granted, you can stock up on healing items but it sucks to be constantly bum rushed and juggled by a bunch of  larger Aragami who congregate in unison. Certainly it adds tension but it is also quite infuriating.

It’s a good thing the AI partners are so gosh darned smart and responsive because otherwise the more difficult missions would be a broken unplayable mess! (In general teammates are quick at reviving you or shooting you with healing bullets)

Anyway, God Eater Burst is definitely worth your money. It has plenty of length even minus the expansion (that’s included, btw) and it remains a decent challenge without becoming utterly impossible! I think anyone into Dark-souls, Phantasy-star online, Kingdom hearts, or Monster hunter will really dig this too. It’s a great psp title to have on the go!

So what can you expect in the future? I’ll be jumping into Ys 7 thus you’ll be seeing me blab about it for awhile! Do you smell that? It’s my weaboo stink!

It trips me out thinking of getting shot with bullets and it healing me. I'm glad you enjoyed it. One of my friends on the Backloggery is playing GEB right now. He's in chapter 9 if that tells you anything.

If he's doing rank 9 quests he's in the "Burst content",Aaron. I haven't done the expansion yet but I really loved the main storyline which was mostly about Shio and the ark project.

I wish I had time to get into God Eater Burst.  You make it sound neat.  You'll love Ys Seven.  I certainly did.

Ys 7 is fun so far,Cary! I love the how the exploration and combat remind me of Secret Of Mana & even the earlier Zelda games. However, I'm not that far in. Only up to the point Adol & Dogi find the first dragon glypth and fight the giant two headed turtle boss. lol.

Ys Seven is pretty much a high speed Secret of Mana on crack.

Funny, I said it was secret of mana on turbo when leaving a post under one of Julian's articles. lol. Totally agree with you!

I'm glad you enjoyed GEB.  I've only played a couple hours of it myself, but I enjoyed what I played.  I guess I'll have to finish it sooner then later...

I have to second Cary's recommendation of Y's 7.  It's hella fun!  I had a blast with it.

The story improves as you go along,Ceva! That and it's good fun to beat the crap out of monsters whilst feeding their parts to your living weapon! Only in Japan, aye? lol.

Anyone who likes Dark Souls will like this game?

Well; I need to put on my pants and go buy it now!
As soon as I get a PSP though.. lol

The challenge is there,Chris. However, I think when it comes to environments DS beats the ever living crap out of GEB. One of my biggest complaints is that monsters and areas repeat often.(Though the Burst expansion adds new Aragami to the mix like Hannibal and Venus) However, considering this is a psp game it would be difficult to come up with something as grandiose as DS in every way. If anything, the setting is pretty mature and original for a Jrpg and the bullet crafting system is an addiction onto itself!

You sold me on this one. I have to get it. I need to have more good games for my PSP. This one would definitely add something to my collection.

It's nice and cheap right now,Celt. Aka, it's worth a risk. There's also plenty of bang for your buck!

I have been on the fence on getting a psp or vita cause there are a lot cool lookin japanese games on both. Thing is I hardly even play my DS as it is. I'd hate to drop the coin for one only to end up with a realy expensive paper weight. About the only place I play my DS is when I work the market on Mon & Tues, but its been so buissy lately (which is good) I never get the chance. But God Eater Burst sounds like my kind of game.

God Eater Burst is great but I understand the fear of dropping big money on a handheld if you're not sure when you'll have the time to play it. The DS has good games like Devil Survivor,World Ends With You,DragonQuest, and all the 2D Metroidvania games so chances are you can get more juice out of your DS before snatching up a psp.

Regardless, I'll be doing a lot of reviews on psp games so if you want to sit on the fence a bit to make an informed decision, I'll have your back dawg!

It'll give you hours of entertainment. Be prepared though,Nsonic. Some of the battles towards the end will test your mettle! (But they aren't too bad if you have decent gear)

God Eater definitely expected its players to have Monster Hunter experience, especially in regards to the whole weakness system and the lack of an exp-based leveling system.  Now that I've put in over 100 hours into the game, that's very clear to me.  God Eater is far more forgiving and easier than Monter Hunter will ever be, though.  The damage the Aragami deal, especially in the Burst content, is tame compared to MH standards.  With a good shield (especially one that is designed to counter a specific Aragami) you can take a beating before needing to heal up.  If this were MH, the possibility of 1 and 2 hit KOs would exist even with the best gear.

As for the monster farming, it is less of a chore in God Eater as drop rates are higher and you don't need any special gear to break monster parts.  You can go farther with weaker gear, too, whereas MH would demand better weapons on each new rank (which ties into that game's sharpness system).  Your allies are quite competent in God Eater and they will back you up and make up for your equipment deficiencies.  Even if you're just running interference and allowing your allies to pummel the Aragami, the game does allow for several different approaches (especially for those who just want to experience the story).  The allies are very useful when it comes to Aragami farming, too (like the Sariel), which is more than I can say for Monter Hunter's cannon-fodder cat buddies.

Anyway, I do agree that more gamers should try God Eater.  It's a happy medium between Monster Hunter's brutality and Phantasy Star Portable's easiness, that also offers a dedicated story mode that the other two lack.

I got that feeling too. God-Eater is challenging but it never felt unforgiving. I also would not have been as invested if it lacked a good story-line. Namco has a real gem of a franchise here and I hope to see more footage of God-Eater 2 soon. So far I'm hypothesizing it will stay in Japan, but Vita owners might get lucky. I hope my pessimism gets proven wrong! What's neat is apparentely there's even going to be a psp version of God Eater 2. Some of the new Aragami look wicked cool, btw!

Lastly, the AI partners really are life savers. It's also nice most of them have their own back stories and motivations. Aka, they don't fall into "desposable drone" territory. lol.

I wish I had something positive to add about God Eater 2's Western release.  All I know is that another publisher will have to pick it up, because D3 has distanced itself from Japanese titles (with the exception of EDF).  That said, there are a few details about the PSP and Vita version that might cause trouble for any potential publisher.  Namco-Bandai would need to create a special build of the game for Western release if a publisher decides not to deal with the PSP version.  Both games are connected and can play with each other, and something would need to be done to remove that feature.  Additionally, neither version is online capable.  The PSP version can't connect to our version of Ad-hod Party, either, as we never received the enhanced update that allows it.  In short, there's a few things that need to be worked out, but I do hope the game will travel West, too.  I'm running out of deep and sophisticated multi-player games, and it would be a shame for a game of God Eater 2's depth to stay in Japan.

So I was planning to get this game sometime after all the good things you said about it, and then it showed up on PS+ the other week for free! So I'll definitely be playing it sooner or later Smile
