Game demo up! Er, I think! Let me know?

So, often growing impatient to be approved by the peeps at rmn I decided to simply go to game-front and download my game demo there. I'm not sore at the good peeps at rmn but I wanted a way to get my game out sooner! (I'm an impatient wanker I guess)

Anyway, feel free to download and report any game breaking bullshit. I was pretty thorough but I'm also only one guy so yeah, mistakes are probably still going to pop up!

The total file size is around 362 MB. Depending on your downloading speed and internet connect your results may vary.

The RTP run package was included so that's what jacked up the size considerably.

What to expect

1. Linearity. Massive open-world-ness was sacrificed for character & story development.

2. Old school graphics! Take a time machine back to the snes and genesis era!

3. Some of the content may offend. However, nothing is hardcore X-rated. (It's difficult to make a porno with old school character sprites) I just mean some of the dialogue is a tad racy and some of the protagonists have really messed up back stories.

4. For a demo it's pretty big so yay for content!

5. If it absolutely does not run let me know. I obivously did something wrong if that's the case!

6. The controls are simple. If you've played one rpgmaker rpg then you've played this. The game should also be compatible with an Xbox controller.

Getting it to work

1. Create a folder

2. Put the "blue cube download" in said folder

3. choose the option to "extract here"

4. Click on dragon icon.

5. Enjoy!

I unfortunately do'nt believe I have 362 MB available, which sucks because I would really like to play it.

Sorry bout the size, mate. If I can find a way to trim it down I will.

I wouldn't do so on my behalf, I think others will gladly accept that size, my laptop is just REALLY old and I don't want to download any .exe files on my mom's school laptop. I hope I can find a new laptop sometime soon and download it, though.

By the time you get a new laptop may haps the whole thing will be finished! Laughing

Holy crap. Your laptop be fucked son. I freak out if I don't have at least 100 gb on my pc. Then again that's because it starts to freak out and slow down if I go much over that.

It's honestly not that slow, mostly because it's not a gaming laptop, nor do I use it as one. If I were to run new games on Steam, yeah, it'd be a disaster. lol

I'm downloading it now. My internet connection has been kind of crappy lately so I hope it can finish. If not, I will keep trying! Oh and I don't mind the old school graphics Ben. I don't mind them at all lol. Wink

Fingers crossed,Aaron! Hoping you get the full sha-bang the first time!

It took me a couple of tries to download, but I got it. It seems awesome so far! I love how you used music from Parasite Eve and I couldn't help but notice that "Iced Earth" line in the intro. Is there a way to make it full screen?

BrokenH

08/06/2013 at 02:04 AM

Just hold down alt and press enter to go into full screen mode,Aaron! That should do it!

Downloading. I'm interested to see what you've been doing.

I personally think it's better than my first project. However, you can give me your opinion on that,Andrew!

Noticed you don't have original songs. Do you want me to give you some stuff and you can see what fits and what doesnt? I could also write some shit for it if need be :) Loving the fuck out of the game so far. Just got to  the train station, and the writing and atmosphere so far is just superb. Really looking forward to playing some more later! So yeah, if you want music for it, let me know. This is an awesome project and I'd love to help if I can.

Also, for future releases, maybe do something with the privacy or whatever, because anyone with RPG Maker can open it and steal your shit. Just letting you know!

I could encrypt the file. That would prevent people from taking the sprites & face portraits I guess. I cannot say I would necesarilly mind people using that stuff in their own games so long as they gave credit. (Well, for what actually is mine at least)

As for music, yeah man! Send me whatever you got. If any of your stuff makes it in you will be in the credits,Blake!

Good. I already stole your futuristic tilesets :p I had the modern ones, but not futuristic...

Ok, I shall send you some stuff now and see if there's anything you want. If you tell me what sort of moods you want I could create some stuff too. And keep in mind that I can change the tempo and loop stuff easily, so just tell me if you like something but want changes.

Not to be a sadist, but anything depressing, melancholy,or sad will do. Maybe something more "Metal" and "Confrontational"  for battles. Don't get me wrong. The game gets happier towards the end but there are a lot of dark moments before then.(And if you could save the music files to a smaller format size that would help too!)

As for tilesets & sprites, be my guest! If it helps people with their own games I'm cool with it. (Though theoretically I bought the futuristic tile-set. Aka, I might indirectely be doing something "illegal" by putting it out there without an encryption. Oh well! I always wanted an eye patch, a parrot, and a peg leg!)

I got it downloaded and running under WINE on Linux. It froze once but so far it is working fine. Really deep story too.

Sorry it froze,Lar. If it does it in the same place multiple times let me know. Might be a problem with the scripting.

Played for a bit. Some observations:

Writing and dialogue are strong, even if the characters seem to "spill their guts" to easily to others.

Decent amount of battle options, which is a pleasant surprise

Battle music rocks hard

I think enemy damage ramps up to steeply when you get to hospital, and they always seem to get first attack.

Escape option hasn't worked yet. Kind of strange never being able to run away from regular enemies.

The details derived from your own life set it apart from your average pro JRPG and lend it some authenticity and strong sense of authorship, yet I also welcome what seem to be references to Shin Megami Tensei, Nocturne in particular (twisted enemies, hospital the first major area, eclectic soundtrack, medical/psychological motifs).

Strong base here. If only the Persona engine was available, cheaply and easy to use, because that's what I see visually in my mind's eye.

1. "Running away" is weird. When you're high enough level you can run away from equal level enemies. Yet what's the friggin point if at that moment you're strong enough to whoop their asses? Yeah, Imma going to look into that,Chris. I'd prefer it if it's easier to run away from more difficult enemies.

2. The hospital has an armor stash and weapon stash that should help. Deidre's "saint" ability is powerful as hell in the earlier areas too. Matter of fact every area has a weapon & armor stash so be on the look out!

3. Ben O'sheely is a long winded whiney bastard but considering the game starts in a therapy session it's kind of the nature of the beast. Luckily, Liam and the rest of the cast tend to be more upbeat & more likable as a whole.

I think I wanted to create a protagonist who was somewhat annoying and very flawed in certain ways. Aka, I got tired of the "perfect protagonist" trope in many Jrpgs.

Glad you've enjoyed it so far and the helpful criticism is GREATLY appreciated!

I think I'll try to play this on my netbook. I has more memory than my BEAST PC Rig. And since it's retro I think my netbook can handle it. It don't have an spyware or intrusive programs does it? I've already had to block two NSA probes this week.

I tried the link but it says "file not found" did I miss the release window? Is there a release window for this demo you made?

I will give it a shot tonight. I have plenty of HD space, should be no problem. Sounds like it's right up my alley as I love SNES type graphics and adult content in games.
