Tombraider

Tombraider is probably my favorite AAA game this year. I know certain people took issue with the way “new Lara” was handled (Her voice actress Camille even got death threats.) but I absolutely love her! Put simply,Lara’s a believable person now. Er, more believable. I mean she’s still pretty friggin amazing! While Lara can’t do back flips on a whim and duel wield pistols she’s still plenty agile, dexterous, and light on her feet. Personally I prefer her bow over the twin pistols anyway. It just seems to fit more in line with Lara’s personality and it’s a great weapon for stealth killing, hunting, and miscellaneous other purposes.

I was actually surprised there was in fact so much plat forming and exploration. I read this Tombraider got knocked for not having enough of those things  yet most of the areas are in fact rather expansive and come with their own plethora of secrets.

Puzzles are present but they are easier. On the other hand, they make sense within their environments which to me adds to the immersion factor. If you prefer Rube Goldberg hijinks I can see how you’d be disappointed but for me personally, that kind of puzzle design always seemed silly and awkward in the older Tombraider and Resident Evil games. When you have to turn two statues to face each other and put gems in their mouths just to open the door to the bathroom it bluntly reminds you “Hey Bub, this isn’t real! You’re still playing a videogame!” By contrast, none of the puzzles in this game seem surreal or out of place.

So, is there anything I dislike about this beautiful beast? Unfortunately yes and it has to do with a discussion Casey, Blake, and I had not too long ago. Tombraider has way too many goon fights. You’d think Mathias and his sun goddess cult would only have 150-200 people tops but I swear this guy has reserves that would rival America’s and Britain’s armies combined! After you kill your 300th person it gets rather excessive. Sure, a big boat or downed plane can have quite a few survivors. But the thing is Mathias also puts these folks through brutal conditioning before they earn their membership into his cult. As such he shouldn’t have thousands of henchmen, especially not on a small hidden secluded island. Worst still, the firefight physics are shit. Seriously, I had one guy survive getting hit by three grenades. There are also times a headshot with the pistol will not even have the desired result. It’s odd on account if Lara is in stealth mode and puts an arrow through someone’s head he dies instantly yet if you hit the same mark during a larger scale skirmish these same guys can soak bullets and arrows as if they’re being pelted by marshmallows. If you or I get shot point blank with a shotgun at close range we’re going down. These assholes? Nope! A certain perpetrator in particular lived through  3 consecutive shotgun blasts to his body. (Of course the above issues become less problematic as you upgrade your guns and your skills.)

One of Lara’s most satisfying finishers in when she picks up a rock and smashes it upside an attacker’s skull. She can also use her bow to choke blokes from behind. Taking on 4 or 5 guys can be very fun but when you have to fight through consecutive waves and all your opponents are packing automatic rifles, fire bombs, and shot guns it suddenly feels as if you win fights more because of stupid luck than well planned strategy.

The story is okay. Personally I didn’t get annoyed when Lara winced and expressed she was in pain. I thought her realistic reactions and the grungy grime collecting on her body added a sense of “true danger” the earlier games lacked. The weakest part of the plot are the predictable tropes. Personally I got to genuinely care for most of the side characters but it’s easy to guess who’s going to get kidnapped, who’s going to die, who’s going to be a slimy double crosser, and who’s going  to live. If you are still steeped in your “Star Wars lore” you already know the fate of most “wizened male mentor types”. Don’t get me wrong. Rihanna Pratchett did a wonderful job handling Lara! I simply wish she had been a bit more “unpredictable” writing the rest of the cast.

As critical as I am of Tombraider’s flaws, I probably haven’t enjoyed an action game this much since Resident Evil 4! This is a game that would have been worth the full retail price and considering you can get it for around $10.00 or $14.00 now, it’s a total steal!

PS: Be warned, there are quick time events! However, I was able to master them pretty quickly. They neither added much to the overall experience or detracted from it. The hardest section for me was navigating Lara through the trees after she deployed her parachute!

Final Fantasy Dissidia Duodecim

Dissidia is one of those games that defies having a solid classification. While many gamers may call it a “fighting game” it’s like no other fighting game I’ve ever played before. Environments are huge and often have obstacles, breakable sections, pitfalls, and on-rails tracks that help you zip around quicker. Additionally you have to steal your opponents bravery points even before you can begin to do true physical damage to them. Each character has a diversified EX special that is pulled off in a completely unique way from the others. These epic super techniques  pay homage to the varied FF games of yore.

So, is the game engaging? Honestly, I was a tad frustrated with it until I switched things over to rpg mode. This option makes the game more streamlined and you get to select your commands from a menu just like FF‘s ATB system. The action on the screen remains fast and frantic so proper timing of your input commands is still a necessity. Rpg mode makes the game “easier” but it doesn’t make it a total push over either.

When not battling with manikins or their powerful “true versions”, you can explore a vast map. “White gates” can be accessed at anytime but “red gates” disappear after you clear them. Within each gate is a mini labyrinth where you find treasure and more foes to fight. If an ally is also within the gate-world he or she can be used as an assist character. (Assist characters can be called into the fray for a few brief seconds.)

Needless to say, there are moogles too and eventually they open up a shop where you can buy equipment from. (Changing around your weapons and armor does in fact effect your defense and attacks when you’re brawling away!) You also unearth the “summon stones” of certain Aeons/Esper/Materia. Can you guess what those do? C’mon, this is FF! No deep contemplation is required!

The biggest draw for me is the characters. Even “olden greats” like Cecil, Terra Bradford, Golbez, Kefka, and Dragoon Kain are present and they’ve never looked better! Have no idea who I’m talking about? Fret not. Squall, Cloud, Sephiroth, Lightning, Yuna, Tifa and a slew of other more mainstream well-known faces round out the roster nicely.

If you love FF’s compositions you can sigh in relief. The music is wonderful as always! Don’t worry graphics gurus, I haven’t forgotten you. The game “looks” wonderful as well. The visuals really push what the psp is capable of!

For me personally, Dissidia Duodecim is one big fangasm. However, if you have NEVER gotten into Final Fantasy a lot of these characters and their interactions will fly over your head. It’s still an enjoyable game in its’ own right but “appreciating the franchise” to some degree does make the cake that much richer and sweeter!

Path Of Exile

Path of exile was born out of discontent. I think certain Diablo fans were tired of waiting for Diablo III and once Diablo III came along they still thought there was something missing. Thus “Path Of Exile” came into existence and steadily grew from there!

For the record, Path of exile is a dark place. You wash up on a shore only to watch another shipwrecked survivor get eaten by a zombie. Right away you’re forced to fight for your measly life. You finally arrive in a village in dire need of protection and medical supplies. From there on out you fight more zombies, slay a slew of cannibals, and try to prevent an epidemic from spreading amongst the local animals as well.

That’s all I know so far, really. I did have a blast whacking rude undead and man-eating savages with my rusty rapier. I also chugged plenty of nostalgically red health potions along the way! I chose to be a simple duelist because I was afraid the arcane path of the witch would be too complex for my primitive pea brain to handle. There are other classes as well but I’ll have to become better acquainted with them on another day.

If you “are” a fan of Diablo, POE seems rather perfect. It likewise looks and runs great yet isn’t too haughty when it comes to pc specs. Additionally the superb voice acting, desolate atmosphere, and befittingly dour soundtrack all create a world that harkens back to the demonic depravity and terrible secrets of the first two Diablo games. Assuming you’ve beat DIII and you want to invest more time into another superbly done hack n slash dungeon crawler, POE is a great place to visit! (Just ask Blake, our resident cross dressing witch!)

POE is great! I'll probably play it more after I finish up Tomb-Raider and unlock "the labyrinth mode" in Dissidia! I think anyone who loved Diablo should give POE a fair chance.

those Dissidia games sound insane.  I tried the first one but didn't get it.  Cool there's o much fan service in them though.  Now if only I could get FFIX-2!

You might like Duodecim's rpg mode,Matt. It made battles a lot less frustrating for me personally!

I still say Tomb Raider was just okay. Sure, there was more exploration than your average action game, but it never really got to the point where it scratched my exploration itch like, say Metroid Prime. That's really TR as a whole for me, everything it does is technically good, but it never goes far enough to really satisfy anything.

BrokenH

12/04/2013 at 05:13 PM

I never "loved" Tombraider as a franchise either. If it hadn't been for TR Anniversary and TR: Guardian Of The Light I would have been completely disinterested as a whole. But the reboot hits most of the rights for me,Cas! I just HATE the enemy wave segments.

Would recommend to play the first Tomb Raider games before going for the reboot/ prequel/whatever, or can I play it as a standalone game?

BrokenH

12/04/2013 at 05:15 PM

This game is a prequel so luckily you don't need knowledge of the other games to enjoy it,Alejandro. If you enjoy games like Uncharted and Resident evil 4 it's a safe bet you'll like TR:Reboot as well!

Tomb Raider's immersion factor was compromised when I noticed that the game corrects your jumps for you. I mean, if we're judging immersion by how realistic or non gamey a game is, no games pass because of the various menus, pop ups, glowing objects, etc. that you'll find in every game.  I judge immersion by how involving a game is. A seriously gamey game like Alpha Centauri is more immersive than any FPS realism simply because it requires more concentration and overall mental involvement.   Seems Newmb Raider is pretty involving for you even though it is as gamey as the originals, just in different ways. They did a good job on the environmental effects and lighting.

But back to that platforming: problem isn't that it doesn't exist, problem is that there is no sense of danger or defying death. The original TR was Prince of Persia in 3D (before there was an actual 3D PoP). It was about timing and concentration. I never heard anyone complain about the old games being too difficult, so I have no idea why they didn't maintain the, imo, more interesting level layouts and intense spelunking of Anniversary.

Oh well. Not a bad game, just a missed opportunity in some areas. Not as bad as the Thief reboot is looking to be. I hope that game tanks.

BrokenH

12/04/2013 at 05:29 PM

That's where we difer somewhat,Chris. A lot of that old school difficulty seems a tad tidous for me now. (I'm getting old, bro. lol. My twitch monkey reflexes aren't what they used to be!) Beyond that, my definition of quality platforming might be different. Pretty much if an environment has many tiers from ground level to "high up there" and it requires jumping, climbing, and a basic knowledge of physics to traverse it, I still consider that enjoyable platforming even if  the margin for error has been somewhat reduced.(Though there were still a few times I died in TR over miscalculating a jump or simply not watching where I was during a fight.) I also found in TR there were areas off the beaten path so I never felt completely boxed in.

If anything, TR isn't as bad as "Heavy rain" or "Two souls" when it comes to a lack of interactivity. Once all games pretty much try to be like those titles I think I'll throw in my controller and call it quits! (No offense to people who enjoyed those games. I simply believe calling them "games" instead of "interactive movies" is a bit misleading.)

Machocruz

12/04/2013 at 05:54 PM

Tomb Raider never had old school difficulty, and it certainly wasn't twitch. I'm talking about sensation. The sense of vertigo, of being on the razor's edge. Like standing on the edge of a tall skyscraper -it's not difficult to do, but it feels dangerous. Obviously we differ on whether the new game accomplished this, but that's what the name Tomb Raider evokes to me. Just saying.

BrokenH

12/04/2013 at 06:03 PM

The games that gave me the worst vertigo were the difficult platformers of yesterday. I agonized in ninja gaiden as I clung to a cliff face knowing one of those damned bats or birds could knock me into a pit at any second. Not to mention the hassles of when NG 2 on the nes introduced "wind" as another enemy.

I may have felt like that a few times in TR but not quite to the same dizzying extent. If they were going for "vertigo" they only partially succeeded. (Another game that can give you true fear of heights is Half Life 2.)

Thanks,Chris! You made me delirous just discussing this stuff! Gonna hurl!

Knew you'd like the new TR game. It's certainly not the best game out there, but it was a lot of fun. I'm stuck near the end due to the bullet sponge factor, though. And oh how I hated that parachute segment!

BrokenH

12/04/2013 at 06:20 PM

I spent many times impaled on a tree branch,Tam. lol. And I agree, there's a lot of bullet spoonging going on. I know these peeps are crazy occultists but frak, they're also supposed to be human!

I like the way the 'new' Lara looks, but like you said to me before, i'd hate to see her die in really gross ways.  She needs to be in a colorful Kirby world in her next game.  I'm sure she'd really like that. :)

Did you say she could pick up rocks and hit people on the head with them?  How big are these rocks?  Are they like boulders?  It would be cool if she could pick up boulders.  I bet you're glad I'm not designing future Tomb Raider games, huh?

The FF Dissidia games are great.  Tifa is a new character in the sequel and she's awesome.  But my favorites are still Terra and Kefka.  --Cary

BrokenH

12/04/2013 at 08:25 PM

In this game I cringe everytyime Lara dies,Cary. I still think the game would have been just as good without the gruesome death animations. It's okay to leave certain things "implied". However, when Lara "makes it" you feel really good!

I agree Dissidia Duodecim is a great game. It's nice even the older classic FF heroes and villains get to shine!

I had downloaded POE recently.... but my laptop can't handle it. It looks awesome though. I remember all the controversy surrounding Diablo 3. That was the main reason why I had bought Torchlight 2. FUCK THAT TREE SECTION!!! Seriously though, Plus10damage are doing a GOTY podcast soon where we argue about what games should and should not be on the GOTY list. I'm going to be arguing so hard against Tomb Raider it's not funny. Seriously, fuck that game. Here's some reasons: "Whoever designed the first two hours of this game is going to the special hell. After I kill them in a terribly vicious manner that would make Kratos proud, of course. Preferrably ripping out their eyes using a quick time event, which would be an ironic twist of fate seeing as how this insufferable cunt is so fucking fond of them."

"One of the main praises for this game is that it has a strong female lead. Sure, if you count a completely psychotic sex symbol as strong, then you're absolutely right. However, Lara is seriously not a good role model, nor is she an accomplishment of feminism. For starters, the only thing that seperates her from Nathan Drake is that she screams a lot more, and is a lot more scared than the big male action heroes who don't need to cry. I mean, outside of crying and screaming and being in an incredible amount of pain, she barely has a character. We're supposed to believe that she's gone through this huge transformation by the end because she can shoot people without crying, but she did that at the start of the game. She killed a dude who was getting frisky with her and started crying over it, only to start killing off his friends with the precision of Lee Harvey Oswald. SHE DOESN'T EVEN WINCE! I mean this bitch is completely psychotic. After she gets upset over killing a moose, she kills about a thousand animals for what is basically the game's currency. So not only is she a psychotic bitch, she's also an avid hater of anything that isn't human.

This is without mentioning that the first hour and a half holds your fucking hand more than the first 20 hours of FFXIII. At least that game let me walk for more than 5 seconds before interrupting me with a cutscene. And in the first 3 hours of this game, I swear to god there were more quick time events than the entire of Resident Evil 6. To take someone out silently you have to do a quicktime event. What's fucking silent about smashing the keys a million times per second?"

Look, Tomb Raider is decent, but not even in the top 20 games released this year.

Those are my thoughts on the game. Also, I'm glad you like Path of Exile. The game is great! I just finished it. The last boss is fucking hard though. Going through the next difficulty, and there are new spells and abilities! THEY ARE AWESOME!!! Oh, and you thought the game was grim early on, wait until you get to the second last area. There are piles of bodies, failed experiments on people, torture devices, pools of blood, and just general disturbing stuff. It's actually hilarious how overboard it is.

P.S. Sorry for how long this is...

Holy crap I need to listen to this podcast.

BrokenH

You see I don't understand the flak Lara gets. People fuss how she felt more guilty killing a deer than a human being but keep in mind the deer wasn't homicidal and trying to kill her at every turn. If I had hordes of nutty cultists trying to choke me and murder me, my empathy for them as "fellow people" would decrease very rapidly. Eventually I'd start laughing manically whenever one of them would fall off a cliff or get their leg caught in a bear trap. It's not homicidal to hate people hellbent on murdering and torturing you. You're dead on with some of the game's mechanical shortcomings but Lara is not a psychopath merely for defending herself in a situation that calls for aggression to survive.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

12/08/2013 at 03:56 PM

It's not that. It's how quickly it happens. Like, within seconds, she cries over killing a person or killing a deer, and then the next person she's just like BAM! I have nothing inside of me. It's not that it happens, it's how quickly it happens. It's like me crying because I ran over a cat and then a minute later deciding that running over cats is fun and trying to make them splatter in hilarious ways while laughing my ass off.

BrokenH

12/08/2013 at 04:08 PM

You're arguing for more paced and gradual emotional development in a game that's essentially an action platformer,Blake. Personally I'm glad Lara toughened up quick so I didn't have to play through a big chunk of the game almost entirely helpless. On the flip side you could argue "Okay, then it shouldn't have been there at all if done poorly!" but considering Lara's training before the event in question, she would probably snap to attention quicker than someone with no experience in the first place.

There are many parts in the game I'd call foul on (Lara survives some ridiculous falls with nary a bruise) but never underestimate the dark-side of human instinct. When pushed into a corner and when we ourselves and our loved ones are threatened we will do very callous and cruel things to our enemies just to live on.

I'm not saying Lara's progression is perfect but I've seen worse characterization in about 70% of the action movies I've watched in my life time. lol.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

12/08/2013 at 05:29 PM

The thing was that EVERYONE praised Lara as a character. She's barely a character though. Also, your argument of "It's an action platformer," is like saying "We shouldn't expect intelligence from a movie based on a comic." We've seen better in the genre. We've seen Enslaved. We've seen Uncharted. Genre is not a reason to deny criticism.

Yeah I guess the dark side of nature is  a good point, but still, it's bad story telling. I'd not care about that if the game is good, but it's not that great. It's hyped as fuck for such a generic piece of trash.

BrokenH

12/08/2013 at 06:22 PM

I think the problem is "hyped as fuck" equates to "piece of trash" for many gamers. Can't it simply be "hyped as fuck" yet "A decent game with some flaws"? That's my problem I guess. Too often I fall in the middle of two extremes. Personally I think TombRaider is a good yet imperfect game. Maybe it's not "GOTY material" but I wouldn't call it complete rubbish either.

Secondly, I'm not implying an "action platformer" cannot have good character development and a great story. However, these games do tend to move at a faster clip than say an rpg. If you want to trash Lara that's okay. But I wouldn't say I was "intrigued" by the stories in God Of War or DMC either. Hell, when compared to Kratos and Dante Lara is STILL much more human. I'm not saying I "hate" the later two protagonists but I will admit I did not play their games because I "liked them". I played their games because of the nice scenery, epic boss fights, and awesome fighting physics.

Overall you have good points,Blake. I just can't understand why you WANT to HATE this game so much. Is it only because it's "overhyped" or do you have a better reason to go after it with so much disdain?

Blake Turner Staff Writer

12/08/2013 at 07:04 PM

I mainly hate this game so much because the first two hours of the game are among the worst I've played this year. It's all cutscenes and qte's, and the qte's are frustrating and on pc don't tell you which key to press. The rest of the game is better, but it's hardly great, and I was just either bored or annoyed most of the time I played it.

Also, Kratos is a GREAT character in the first game. A lot of people forget that because he turns completely farcical in the sequels. He is tragic, suicidal, and slightly unhinged, and the developers wanted you to feel uneasy playing as him. Later on he sucked and became hilarious, but to begin with he was interesting at least.

BrokenH

12/08/2013 at 07:37 PM

I agree with you on Kratos. The first game did a good job in his portrayal. (Even if I thought certain parts were just repeats of the stories I read in HS involving Hercules) In the first game he was a family man driven to kill his own family by Ares and that was a perfect motif for revenge against the gods. However, that doesn't excuse the fact the other games lost sight of the original vision and butchered every likable trait of his personality.

As for Dante? He's an attractive pretty-boy cheeky showoff. I think deep down he means well (Protecting us from demons and all that rot) but he's still kind of shallow. Everything people like about Dante is based on his looks, style, and fashion choices. (I still want to try the reboot though despite the venom it gets from fans)

Concerning the first two hours of TR? They were rife with qtes but I still managed to enjoy myself. Not in a perfect "home run" kind of way but more in a "I like where this is headed and all I have to do is be patient" kind of way. I'm glad I did too because the game really opens up later on!

Still, let me know about the Podcast! It's been fun listening in on you guys! Smile

I hope to get Tomb Raider next year.  I don't know much about the "issues" with the game, but I'll make my own decisions when I play it myself.  I hope I enjoy it.  I hadn't enjoyed a Tomb Raider game since the 1st one.

Personally I think it's a good game,James. It's not a perfect game but it is definitely worth an investment! Personally I'm enjoying it as much as I did RE 4 back in the day. (Save for some frustrating unnecessary QTEs. There easy once you get the gyst of them but why even have them in the first place? Also, I hope the future game has enemies without the bullet sponge merit. Some fire fights get kind of ridiculous.)

I was going to replay the game until Definitive Edition for the PS4/Xbox One was announced. It kind of weird that they altered Lara's face for the next-gen version.

As for Final Fantasy Dissidia Duodecim, I didn't really feel for the combat; it was kind of tedious and grindy.
