Kong a Day #1 - Warming Up

All of you dedicated bloggers have me inspired to at least try participating in BaD this year. I’d never even considered taking part back on 1up (where I wasn’t all that active anyway), but I figure I might as well give it a shot this year. Since I know I won’t have anything too interesting to talk about from my daily life for an entire month, I came up with a gimmick – and one I’m excited to undertake.

Since I own a Donkey Kong cabinet, I periodically try to get better at it. The last thing I want to be is a Donkey Kong poseur. I’ve dedicated myself to improving my score a couple of times, but it’s been a while. At first, I couldn’t get to 50,000 points no matter how hard I tried, but after hitting it hard for a week, I got there. Same thing with 100,000. Since I hit that milestone, I’ve only messed around, and my high score has sat at 131,700 for a while now. I’m hoping to get up to the 200K mark this time, if for no other reason than to post in a thread for such people on klov.

I’m going to do my best to play at least one game of Donkey Kong a day and then post my score(s) here, good or bad. I’ll also try to throw out some things I find interesting about this pretty important arcade game along the way. For my first day, I’m just going to stick to my scores, though. I didn’t do too badly since I’m out of practice. My first game came in at 94,100 and the second at 81,000. Hopefully I’ll do better tomorrow (and take a better picture of the screen).

Yeah, I decided to take part in Bad this month too.

On a side note, I tried to link my BaD post to the Blog a Day series, but it doesn't show up as a blog when I click the Blog A Day ticker on the front page.  Just FYI.

Yeah, something isn't quite right in the site's guts. Nick will fix it soon...

Ms Pac-Man would be awesome! Well, I'd take that or an original Pac-Man, which I still like, even though I will agree that Ms. is better.

what i would also like is an original, sit-in Starwars arcade game.  that is classic too.

That would be cool. I also must recommend playing the vector Star Trek game in a sit-down cabinet. I played it at a Texas Pinball Festival, and was pretty amazed at how fun it was.

Good month to talk about Donkey Kong, too, what with the new game coming out later this month.  In fact, even though I won't be doing a blog a day, I do have a blog planned to post around the time of the new game's release, and it'll be about my top five favorite DK games!

I'm not a huge modern DK fan, although I'm not a hater either. I'm looking forward to your blog about your five faves, for sure, though.

Good luck getting those high scores Travis. I love the simplicity of old school DK games. I might have to break out Donkey Kong Classics on NES to celebrate.

What I love about it is that it is simple, but throws tons of curve balls every single time. You can't memorize a pattern or anything to get very far -- you have to learn to improvise.

I think this is a really good idea for BaD actually. A game like Spelunky would work well also like Patrick Klepek does for Giantbomb.

Yeah, Spelunky has that cool Daily Challenge feature so that everyone plays the same levels on the same day. Unfortunately for me, my levels will all be the same (albeit with differing enemy patterns). Thanks for the support!

That's cool. I'd like to play Xevious for high score sometime.

Same here. Xevious was one of my favorite arcade games when I was a kid and I would like to get one... some day.

Ditto.

They're definitely not rare, and not too expensive. The main issue is getting one that works (or fixing it yourself) and making room for it.

Now that's a nice twist to the BaD formula! Looking forward to seeing how you do during the month. Go for broke!
