Frothing, Asynchronous Civilization V, Big Top, Writer's Block, Riveted Crotch Pants

I'm not one for blogging, but since I'm sitting here at the computer with writer's block, I figured I would go ahead and spew out some random things to power through it. This is going to be some quick hits type content here, yo, so hold on.

I'm sure I've tired you out on my stupid Frothy Bird game chat by now, but I wanted to mention that I inserted a custom font for the score and level boards and it now displays your best and last score after you die. All of those features needed to be in there before the Flappy Jam concluded, but I ran out of time. They are there now, and that is potentially the end of the line for Flappy Bird improvements. I have another idea to stick in there, but I would like to move on to a new project.

I have several ideas for small games to tackle next to learn more about Unity, but I am still far from decided on what to do. In the meantime I am going to just mess around or work on my larger 3D project. While researching a few of my ideas, I went and watched a video (below) of a game I played endlessly on our IBM PC-8088 as a kid. What glorious pinks and blues! What slow movement! What a weird game! I loved it for some reason. It just looks to slow to enjoy now, but I thought the video was interesting. It was also created  by a total programming badass. Take a look and see what I chose to do instead of playing more Atari in 1986.

Another thing that has kept me unnecessarily obsessed this weekend is playing an asynchronous game of Civilization V. This requires a weird set up through a service called Giant Multiplayer Robot that basically passes a hot seat game's save file back and forth. It works pretty well, but is a little wonky here and there. For a free service still marked as beta, it is working well. Playing an asynchronous game of Civ V takes quite a while to get interesting, I might add. After two days of pretty constant turn-taking, things are just barely getting moving. I'm hooked! I'm also trying really hard not to start my own single-player game right now. I have to remain faithful to my cossacks!

One final thing I have on my (trivial, hobby, fun-time) mind is finishing up Weapon Shop de Omasse for review. I suppose you should wait for my final verdict, but I haven't hated playing a game this much in quite a while. I mean, look at these guys' pants! This game is bound to be bad, right?

So, anyway, back to finishing up an unmentioned review and hopefully more turns in Civ V. I've got some barbarians to clear out of this place. It's a mess!

That pirate looks like JET from Bebop, so I'm cool with him for now. Even with his Hammer Pirate Pants.

I don't know how, but that video you posted is giving me nostalgia, and I never played that game, which was clearly before my time. I must have played a similar old game, but still, before my time for sure.

I got 32 points in Frothy Bird just now. Eventually, the white and black dots will overlap each other right near the bird's mouth, and that's when I lose.

They are blacksmiths, so maybe they have to wear some sort of crotch guard? I don't know, it just looks odd.

Yeah, the overlap is what I might create a work-around for. I'm not sure yet, though. Thanks for playing it again!

Didn't notice the crotch guards before, but now that you bring them up, I think they're smiling at me.

oh man I love those pink and blue graphics.  I want to make a game that looks like that.  I played many a game with that uh... aesthetic.

What's your 3D project about?

The 3D project is inspired somewhat by Jumping Flash, Temple Run, and the end of Metroid... plus a bunch of other things. :D

You didn't like Weapon Shop de Omasse?  I'm working on reviewing it right now and I love it.  But then, it reminds me of Cooking Mama games and I like those.  I'm weird I guess.  I just finished reviewing another Level 5 game called Inazuma Eleven, and I didn't like that one as much even though it's the more popular, robust game.

I haven't finished it yet, but am trying my hardest to get there. Not liking it is an understatement. I went and read some glowing reviews (which I normally avoid while playing for review) to see if I had something wrong. Nope. I'll have to finish and collect my thoughts. Maybe it will turn around somewhere after the half way point!!

Yeah I read some reviews for Inazuma Eleven and they were all glowing, but I didn't like it as much.  We can't like 'em all.  It'll be interesting to see your review and read what you didn't like about Weapon Shop, and see how that compares to what I liked about it!

Yeah, I'm curious too. I just dipped into a couple of reviews to see if I was "doing it wrong." I have concluded I am not.

Actually score comparison is important in old school games in general! I know in games like Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt I was obsessed with beating my last score. I eventually grew out of that but it was a huge motivation when I was in arcades and when I first got my nes.

I can get the high score bug fairly badly, even though I rarely get that good at a game. It's probably similar to my itch to beat my 5K times I had when I was younger... I'll never get there again, I'm afraid.

I need to get back into Civ. The last one I really played was on the Playstation
